  • Spanish Bowline - Very Fast and Easy Way to Tie the Spanish Bowline
    I really have to thank Alan Lee for demonstrating the quick of of tying the Spanish Bowline. I have in the past been a little reluctant to show how this style of Bowline is tied, mainly due to the fact that most variation are a little complicated. If you are interested in seeing more of Alan's knots, then take a peek here: goo.gl/mkwnKi
    Images of the Spanish Bowline in use here: igkt-solent.co....
    ABoK: 202. When a carpenter slings a ladder, he generally uses a Sheepshank Knot over the ends of each side post. For the same purpose, a sailor would use a Spanish Bowline, but he would have no ladder unless he were hauled out in dry-dock.
    265. An injured or unconscious man is lowered by a Spanish Bowline Knot (1087), each leg being stuck through one of the loops. After a hitch is passed close under the armpits, the man may be safely moved. Channel Handle: @KnottingKnots

    I like the way the knot is done here, because in this way you can make it both in the middle or in one extreme of the rope. Nice and easy! Thank you very much!

    Got it! Fantastic! the funny thing about these dreary old knots is that many of them are designed to get you out of a scrape when the wind has just ripped away the spars and you are trying to save the mast. So, in order to properly appreciate the use of knots you must tie them quickly in front of a huge fan in a freezer with lights out all the while being doused continually in frigid water!! How tame this sounds too compared with an evening at the Horn!

    Like your energy. Right from the start... I can hear your excitement. Enthusiasm can be very powerful. Keep it up. Glad that you've done this particular knot... it's been one of the hardest for me to figure out.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, this one used to be a real pain to me also. Since learning the easy method, I have grown to like this one.

      I checked out Alan's channel... guy is amazingly fast at tying these kinds of knots.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes he is, but I sometime wonder about some of the test videos.

    • @davidmadisontheguardian
      @davidmadisontheguardian 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      'Test' videos? I noticed that he doesn't show how he ties things from a natural perspective; but from the perspective opposite of a PERSONAL POINT OF VIEW. In either case, though... I'm amazed at his skill.
      And I'm impressed that from those kinds of videos; you were able to work out not only how he did it; but then were able to adjust the method to lay it on the table for us.

    @davidmadisontheguardian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I feel like spending so much time tying and untying and examining all these knots and hitches; has helped to develop the logical side of my mind a bit more. The more complex the knot...the more my brain has to work. But an interesting thing has begun happening after weeks or months of watching, tying, untying and trying to understand the underlying principles... I can tie much more complex knots a lot faster and understand more knots at greater speed; and am able to group them in my mind. In short, I seem to be gaining a kind of intuition when it comes to knot tying.
    Additionally, I've been taking a look at rope magic tricks, and sailing specific knots... such as the cleat hitch. I'm learning WHY you tie things a certain way. I think that is really important for anything that affects your life; or your livelihood or someone you are watching over.
    Also... I've been taking a look and practicing various decorative knots and paracord braiding.
    I'm having a blast!

      The Star Knot always has an effect of great thought for me. Tying it is now fairly easy, but going around tightening it is another. I always seem to struggle to remember where the cords go within the actual knot.

    • @davidmadisontheguardian
      @davidmadisontheguardian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll have to take a look at this knot. I love a challenge. I'll probably wind up watching several different methods of tying it, in order to understand it more fundamentally.
      Thanks for the recommendation, Johnny!

    A few weeks ago, I was at a nautical themed restaurant which had a display of knots. I recognized all but the Spanish Bowline. I thought immediately: I wonder if Johnny Debt knows that one. Voila! I guess you read minds as well as teaching knots. Well done.

I sometime find that when I produce a new knotting video on a particular knot, then all of a sudden I see other sites that have done it just before or after me. Sometimes other knotters seem to line up like planetary alignments. Did you by any chance get some photos of the knot displays?

    I like the Double Lineman's loop much more, the Spanish bowline is less secure - the size of the loops can change relative to each other when pulling hard on one loop. I also prefer double lineman's loop over the Double Alpine knot, seems to use less rope.
