Imagine if Davis had the ranking events on offer today when he was in his prime. In my opinion he would have won loads more ranking events and also improved his century break tally. Century breaks weren't as important in terms of stats when he was in his prime. I met him twice and was a gent on both occasions. He is very modest nowadays about his abilities but this upload just shows how great a player he was. Absolute class.
It's very sad that people never mention the commentator, John Pulman, anymore. He was World Champion for 10 years straight, but died in poverty. I'm a beginner at snooker, and I'm just enjoying his book - it's very helpful.

His break building snooker brain is just genius in this video. The first break especially a key shot nudging the pink directly in line with the black on the cushion so that he can make use of the top cushion completely taking the last reds with blacks.
I'm a huge Davis fan His cue action changed snooker and was the blueprint for the modern player.His iron will to win was feared. But he's not the best by a way.Not in tournaments won statistic wise or the calibre of player he came up against. A strong no 3 in the all time greats .

Steve davis would have achieved even more than he already did if he did more break building which he never did anywhere near as much as he could of He was tactition so would always do 50 break etc then leave safe or snooker them then another break If he was a more attacking player in break building he would achieve more starting with most centuries etc He proved how good he could get a century but just chose to not to take any risks just mostly the way he played
I think I remember that White had a new tip put on his cue before the final. That said, Davis was the dominating force back then and White did his deck chair impersonation.
They played twice at the crucible. Both were semi finals. Davis won the first 16-9 and Hendry won the second 16-9. Overall, there literally wasn’t a frame between them in the world championship.
Those two semi finals came in 1989 and 1994 and both times the winner of each match went on to win the final. Steve Davis beat John Parrott in the final in 1989 by 18-3 and Stephen Hendry beat Jimmy White in the final 18-17 in 1994.
And to think a mere 2 years later on from these breaks, Steve was never the same player. He was still good, but the edge he had had on the likes of Jimmy White and John Parrott had gone. Steve started missing too many blacks off spots and easy reds to stop the charge of Stephen Hendry. Stephen also created chances and rarely missed when among the balls, this i believe dented Steve's confidence. Hence why post 1989 it was pretty much downhill all the way for the great Steve Davis.
Hendry was at the table making frame winning breaks sooner than Davis usually did forcing him to make them 2 or 3 visits sooner in frames to win than he was comfortable with he could not cope. Davis was under far too much pressure against a Hendry who only came to the table to clear it.
He must have felt invincible at this point, having won the Masters and the World Championship earlier in the year and would win the Grand Prix the following month. Sadly, he was brought down to earth by Stephen Hendry in the UK Championship Semi-final and then same again in the 1989 Masters. The 1989 World and Grand Prix were kind of "last stands."
Always loved to watch Jimmy and wanted him to win so badly but despite his enormous talent he was also a fool. He just lacked the foresight Steven and Hendry had. Same is even more true for Alex Higgins
This is when Steve Davis was at his peak & basically unbeatable & then Stephen Hendry came along in a few years & completely fucked his head up. Steve Davis at one point did not beat Stephen Hendry for 10 years.

@Eric Lewis It certainly would but it would be just as interesting to see how O'Sullivan would have developed as a player without having been inspired by Davis. People often forget that players don't exist in isolation and that the influence of previous generations is a great thing.
Wayne Holmes you obviously never played Snooker or you’d have noticed he had no real position for black on off that particular red, and even if he had played for black, he would have had no angle on it to realistically continue on for a frame winning break; thus risking possibly not winning the frame.

Absolutely.. less than 50 ranking events, for the entire 1980s. And in 80 and 81, only the world championship was a ranking event.
