Colorado River Pearce Ferry Rapid After High Flow Release From Glen Canyon Dam

  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #255
On November 5, 2018 the Department of the Interior cranked open the spillways on the Glen Canyon Dam, from the usual 7-12,000 cfs to 38,100 cfs! They let 'er rip for 60 hours, in an effort to recreate the natural floods that used to occur before the Colorado River was dammed...and which served to clean out the silt that accumulates on the riverbed.
I went out to Pearce Ferry, where the Colorado River enters Lake Mead 300 miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam, to see what the rapids there looked like before the release -- and then went back a few days later to see how the release had affected them! Let me tell you...it was intense! THE MIGHTY COLORADO RAGED AGAIN...if only for a few days.

Thanks WonderH for a great video. And yes that rock in the center was completely covered in the 80's as lake mead actually backed up into the canyon. My family and I used to drive our cabin cruiser over that area with ease and the lake was many feet deep. Since then my sons and I have taken our inflatables up and down the rapid when it was less severe, but that's been awhile. Thanks to great videos like yours, I am able to keep tabs on things out here in San Diego. Thanks again, you are great! Your enthusiasm is both cute and cool.

OMG - So thankful for this video. I use to own land in Meadview and spent many days on the water in this area between South Cove and Pierce Ferry. I sold my home when the lake water was 80 -90 feet higher than now. I don't even recognize this area anymore WOW! Yes the water use to be very high. We used to put our boat in at Pierce Ferry and boat up into the Grand Canyon. Back then the water was blue. We could boat to where there were beautiful waterfalls. The rafting trips used to end at Pierce Ferry and we often met many of the people as they came out of the Grand Canyon. WOW Thanks. So many good memories!

They were having problems with water to supply Atlanta due to low lake levels years ago, and the Governor held a prayer vigil at the state capital. The prayed for rain, and the rain came, it flooded many parts of Atlanta and many folks died in the disaster. Never underestimate God!

You aren't a nerd or weird for being so enthusiastic about watching the flow of this river. This is an outstanding video that is much appreciated for its informative content. I lived in Flagstaff in the 1970's and took a lot of backpacking trips in the Grand Canyon, many on the unmaintained trails and a few into trail less areas. My first trip to the river was in October of 1972 to Hermit Rapids. The Little Colorado River was in high flood stage as a result of recent heavy rains. About a half mile from the river along Hermit Creek I began to hear what sounded like distant explosions. A more canyon experienced hiker told me that the sound was of huge boulders being bounced down the riverbed by the high flow. The power of the river and the rapid was incredible, I was as enthusiastic as you show in this video.
My career was in land management for the U.S. Forest Service and I'm very familiar with and worked with the National Park Service quite a bit as the two of the National Forests I worked on for 20 years bordered Yosemite National Park and Devils Postpile National Monument. Some might find how these flushing flows came about. The National Park Service conducted a lot of research on the effect of the Glen Canyon Dam on Colorado River riparian ecosystems and the profoundly negative effects that dam has caused. Without flushing flows not only were beaches disappearing, but those remaining were being lost to the invasive Tamarisk bush or small tree. Once the voluminous research was gathered for 30-40 years a lot of political pressure was aimed at the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), builders and operators of both the Glen Canyon and Hoover Dams. This came from multiple conservation organizations, the river recreation industry and from some of the good guys and gals in the Congress. Finally, the BOR caved and has become a little more cooperative with the National Park Service. I think some additional flushing flows have occurred in the last 10-15 years. Maybe what you witnessed is the first of its kind at this level of release.
There are additional issues resulting from Glen Canyon Dam, including profound effects to the fish population of the river. The cold water released from the bottom of Lake Powell on a constant basis has had negative effects on native fish species. Kudos to the National Park Service and a number of universities for the outstanding research done documenting what the Glen Canyon Dam has done to the river.
A secret political fact is that many in Congress wanted the Glen Canyon Dam built to hold back the sediment of the river on the bottom of Lake Powell to extend the life of Hoover Dam, which has lost about 4-5 million acre feet of storage (now about 27 million acre feet or less) since it was built up until 1963 when the Glen Canyon Dam shut off the flow. Interestingly enough Lake Powell took from 1963 to 1983 to finally fill to its maximum level. The extremely high flows of 1983 came very close to causing the failure of the Glen Canyon dam, something the BOR does not publicize widely. Lake Mead is continuing to fill up with the sediments from the Little Colorado River and the smaller amounts that flow down the side canyons in Grand Canyon. Lake Powell is losing storage at a rate higher than Lake Mead and may fail in far less than 100 years. The number of years left is controversial, but certainly not sustainable in the long run as most people agree that it is not longer than 100 years. I wish I could live long enough to experience that and what will be done as a result. I don't think much can be done according to the research papers I've read. There are seven states in the Colorado River Compact, an agreement that over allocated the flow of the river due to some very wet years in the decade or two prior to the 1922 agreement. The first state to have its allocation cut is Arizona and the Central Arizona Project, a canal that makes the population level of Phoenix and Tucson possible. The piper will have to be paid at some point, unless this drought ends, a seemingly unlikely occurrence. Tree ring records have indicated droughts of 600 years since the ice age ended 12,000 years ago.

    • @wannabetowasabe
      @wannabetowasabe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I have done some additional research about the current storage capacity of Lake Mead. At the completion of Hoover Dam in 1936, the lake had a storage capacity of a bit over 31 million acre feet. An acre foot contains 325,851 gallons. In 2018 the storage capacity of the lake is 26.12 acre feet, this is a loss, due to sedimentation of nearly 16%. The rate of loss was slowed considerably since the completion of the Glen Canyon Dam in 1963. It has lost about 1 million acre feet of capacity since the mid 70's level of 27 million acre feet which I remembered from my time living in Arizona at the time. So it lost 4 million acre feet of capacity in the 41 years after Hoover Dam was completed, but has only lost 1 million acre feet since the mid 70's, say 1977, a period of 41 years. The difference in the rate has been absorbed by Lake Powell. Another factoid is that Lake Mead has not been filled to capacity (full pool level) since 1983, the same year Lake Powell filled for the first time following the completion of Glen Canyon Dam in 1963. The present Colorado River drought, as Wonderhussy mentioned, began in 1988.

Truly amazing!! You asked why folks, ladies, are not always interested in doing what you do. I think it has to do with your age. Girls back in the 50's on, even before that time, through the 80's, were not always encouraged to do daring things. Boys did that. Now, girls and women do many things that we would never consider and that is great. I depend on your adventures as I am not fit or young enough to do things you do. Thank goodness!

Thanks WH, for your diligence to cover that flushing flow event. So cool to see the before and after. Looks like the rapid at high flow became close to unrunnable because the sneak around on the left sorta disappeared. The best line for a kayak would be that new channel to the right I think, still a class 5 drop. Doable, but not for newbies.

Hussy, that rapid was under water in 2005. I did my first motorized rafting trip with GCEX around Labor Day of that year. Our last night was at the mouth of Spencer? canyon upstream from Pearce Ferry maybe 10-20 miles. A jet boat met us and a group from Canyoneers. It was a quicker way to get us off the boats and on our way home. The guides would take the outer pontoons off to make the raft travel quicker for them but what would take us maybe an hour would take them about 6-7 hours. The jet boat took us all the way to South Cove where a bus was waiting. The jet boat guys stopped before we hit the end of the silt tongue into Lake Mead. He said he will holler out and that would should brace for a moment until we are out into the pretty blue waters of the lake. Luckily we didn't lurch into any sand bar. In 2010 I found a bargain trip and decided to go again and that's when we stopped at Pearce Ferry. This time the raft would go all the way to Pearce. That whole section from about the time you leave the GC boundary into Lake Mead boundary is very silted and the boatmen are constantly dodging underwater sandbars. I did the trip again in 2015. It's always fun stopping on the sandbar for a pee break in view of the Skywalk. :)

So my guess is that those old guys you came across have very youthful souls OR that you have an old soul with a very inquisitive mindset! Nothing compares to the feeling of the powerful raging waters of a river at your feet!

This was awesome Wonderhussy. You can see just on that midstream rock that its been underwater by the horizontal erosion lines, on the shore too.

    Thanks for this
I’m saddened that all that water hasn’t improved lake Meed
    I was there in 92 and 95
Bet I wouldn’t even recognize it anymore
