    When I used a cartridge I used to get a mild burn on my face. Switched to a double edge razor and no more burn now! Now it just rips the skin completely off and where once I had mild burn now I have nice, luxurious blood!

    I’m a new de shaver with the typical sensitive neck areas as well. I’ve found that a little extra face prep such as a light skin exfoliating pre shave and skin exfoliating on days between shaves has brought my skin to a very desirable comfort level.I use alum block after every shave and Thayers Witch Hazel daily as skin protection. I shave full head and face every third day. Since I have been looking after my skin properly, it is the first time in my life I look forward to a shave, and I’m in my seventies, it’s never too late to do it right.

    New DE razor user here (2 weeks and going well, thanks to this channel and others like it - really enjoying it and getting great shaves). I discovered something I'd like to share. Rather than limit myself to either wtg, xtg, or atg, I came up with a 4th option, 45 degrees, i.e. in between wtg and xtg. I've not seen it mentioned anywhere. I'm using it on my neck on my 2nd and 3rd passes and it's working out really well - nice smooth shaves, no razor burn, and much reduced anxiety when shaving that area. I also just started shaving at an angle between xtg and atg for the areas at the sides of my chin which have coarser, more stubborn hair.

  • @RubbelisPro

    This video is still so relevant even today. When I first started shaving with a safety razor, I kept it pretty mild and I would do multiple passes. Even though I would get a smooth shave, the multiple passes, even with a new blade would cause irritation around where my neck meets my jaw, sort of around my ears.. What I found through trial and error and taking a break from wet shaving to try out the oneblade is that, if I use a more aggressive razor than something like a Rockwell 2C, (I use the gillette fatboy now and the king c gillette DE razors now) and I replace the blade after every shave, I get a smooth shave in 2 passes and I get no irritation at all. Cuts happen but they can be solved through alum, alum might cause irritation for some men after a shave, so I'd recommend a styptic pencil if that's something you notice.

Ive managed to reduce itnto minimal shaving rash but i always get some rash and even a few spots from shaving.

    I spent four years in the Army shaving everyday with a cartridge 5 blade and had tons of ingrown hairs all the time. Wish I would have known about wet shaving then. I've been following you and started shaving with a Merkur, badger brush and Duke Cannon shaving cream. No more burn it ingrown hairs. I thought I had sensitive skin and would always deal with bumps. Thanks for making shaving fun.

    Awesome video. I used to shave with cartridge razor. They completely destroyed my face. I saw some pictures of myself from back then, and the bumps and irritation I had were huge. Anyways, I started using safety razor since a few months back, along with using a brush to lather up the cream. I can tell you straight up that my shaving has become almost perfect. First I figured out how to shave my face, where to start, what direction to go... Then I just got better at using the razor. Most of the days I can get a clean shave with no problems. I still get irritation and bumps from time to time, but nearly as big and harsh as back when I was using a cartridge razor. Not even close. Sometimes it's a small misuse from my part... Sometimes when the weather gets drier (as it is now during the winter), I can get more prone to irritation. But it's a million times better, I can actually now shave regularly (every 2 days in my case). If I get an irrtiation or bumps, I just skip a day (or two if necessary) shaving, and then I get back.
    One thing you all gotta know, if you have sensitive skin... You're never gonna solve that. It's not gonna happen. You're skin is always gonna be prone to irritation. You can only find the best ways to go around it. Know your face. If you can't, you got no choice other than let the hair grow, period. It sucks, but that's how it is.

    Nick,I have used many razors in my life. In 2014, I started using a safety razor. I’d get ingrown hairs and cysts on the neckline. I started using a shave brush in late December 2017. It feel better because of the hydrating hair stimulation. I get better passes with the safety razor and mixing an water/soap agent in a bowl is more sanitary.

      Hi Nick I have a question regarding aftershaves. You mentioned that the alcohol is good for your skin and helps clean the skin, if you use alum block can you use an alcohol free after shave or still stick with alcohol based? Or would you not use alcohol free period? Thank you 😊

    Hey Nick, there's also another option you can add to this list. I think that esfoliation/scrubbing can be useful when added to a pre-shave routine, because maybe one is going to get razor bumps anyway, so a thin skin is going to be easier for the hair to penetrate. I know that the brush is going to get rid of dead skin as a side effect of applying the lather, anyway a dedicated product can maybe help more. I would suggest a brand called Recipe for Men. Also sorry if i'm over commenting your videos, but i really happen to like the a lot, given that only one month ago i made the transition from cartridge to safety razor.

    While most folks' beards grow down, the hair on the lower neck grows up or even sometimes sideways. It's very important to shave with the grain of your beard. Lower neck shaving requires shaving up to go with the grain. Remembering that will greatly eliminate razor burn/bumps.

      Ray Garrett, Jr. Actually everybody's hair grows in different directions. My hair grows mostly to the right but mostly down and a little bit up on my neck, whereas on my face it all grows down. Shaving my neck used to be really painful because someone told me I needed to shave up on my neck and down on my face. Every time it would irritate my skin, I'd get really bad razor burn, and I actually stopped shaving with a razor & moved to a less effective electric razor for a long time. Right now I'm trying to switch to a safety razor and see if that helps.

    So I decided to start using a safety razor about two months ago and I wanted to do a sort of a trial period, so I got myself a Wilkinson Classic cause it was very cheap, it was like 4$. I have a really comfortable shave when I go with the grain and most of the side-grain, but when I go against it I get little cuts all over the place. I don't feel them, they just pop up and it is really starting to annoy me. Do you think that happens because of my cheap razor or blades maybe (I use Gillette Platinum or Wilkinson Standard)?
    Also, great videos man, they got me into the whole wet shaving thing. Cheers!

    Hi Nick - the use of better shave tools also can allow another benefit that goes along with reducing/eliminating razor burn and razor bumps: better skin condition and skin complexion. Skin that has been constantly under attack from irritation/etc looks much less healthy and "bright toned" than skin properly shaved and after cared for. It can be a big, big difference....

    Room temperature water to wash and shave if you have sensitive skin.Some people have really coarse beard hair so they heat the beard with hot water to soften but I tried hot water soaks before shaving and all I got was irritation;and now I stick with room temperature water with no irritation. FYI wash your face with soap before shaving,you must have a clean surface.

    But how do you get your hair so short when you are only shaving with the grain? When I shave with the grain only I can only do one pass and it doesn't get shorter after that one pass but the hair is still not nearly as short as I want it to. My skin is very pale but my beard hair is black so it is very visible and I want it to be as short as possible. I can not imagine reaching my ideal with only with-the-grain-shaving. But maybe my blades are not sharp enough? Or I do something else wrong?

    Interesting....watched this for a friend who suffers badly from razor burn and forwarding it to him. He was using cartridges and going through them at about 2 or 3 a week! I've been using the same cartridge for over 2 years now by simply drying it off every time I use it. I know it sounds strange, but I learned that trick from Clark Howard (clarkhoward.com) who is the consumer guru on a radio station out of Atlanta....he teaches people how to save money on various things, and that's one of the best tricks I've ever learned from him. It isn't the use of the blade/cartridge that wears it out, it's the way moisture reacts to it, so if you dry it off completely after each use, it stays sharp for a long, long time.

    My biggest area is my neck. I still haven't figured it out. The grain on my face goes down, but on my neck it goes left to right. I also don't like shaving over my adam's apple and I sometimes miss a few hairs there.

    • @Nohhbody
      @Nohhbody 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just looked real close yesterday and the left side of my face goes from right to left, but the right side of my face goes out at an angle. I wish it was just simply north to south and it'd be easy. I tried shaving twice the other day and hurt. I don't think I get my lather thick enough. I've only shaved with a safety razor twice now. Didn't cut myself, but pressed a little too hard my second time and caused a sore spot.

    • @Nohhbody
      @Nohhbody 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I always shaved just from the top of my face down to my chest. I never went across or against the grain. Later that evening I went for a second pass and probably got hasty with it and pressed to hard and caused irritation. That spot that was irritated usually gets irritated with a cartridge razor also. I usually just use the electric clippers to shave 99% off and a razor and cream/soap for the other 1%, but I still never get baby smooth.

    • @Nohhbody
      @Nohhbody 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would like to try some of that bar of stuff he rubs on his face for the glide. He always rubs it against the grain. I've only shaved with a safety razor three times now. I need to remember to wet my face, use more water when trying to get a lather, and letting my brush soak more. I shaved against the grain today and my skin is kind of irritated, but for me the bumps will be gone tomorrow.

    • @Nohhbody
      @Nohhbody 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't know where to get a feather blade. I got some Van Der Hagen stuff from Wal-Mart for Christmas, so this all real new to me. By the time I went against the grain I had already gone over it 3 different times. With the grain once and across twice. I'm normally the one with the unshaved beard, but I had a job interview a few weeks ago and kept with it. I dislike the expensive of cartridges for a cartridge razor and how clogged with hairs they get. Also the crème just seems weird.

    Several manufacturers make after shave that has natural ingredients that cause a slight numbing effect on your face. For many people who get bad razor burn regardless this is a good alternative. It doesn't last forever maybe 15 mins but its nice.
    Iv used it at first it has a mild cooling feel to it then you just don't feel the razor burn for about 15 mins. It seems to last long enough to avoid the beginning. Razor burn doesn't last very long for me.

      Traditional alcoholado de malagueta (rubbing alcohol with bay) or bay rum will do that as well. It's very invigorating also,, and is used as a traditional aftershave in Carribean countries.

    Hysteresis doesn't actually always happen with multiblade carts- in fact the idea that two blades shave closer than one was actually challenged in the 70's when the Trac II came out (and I believe Personna or Shick did scientific research to prove that it didn't shave better). But you wouldn't actually want it to happen anyways, because it can cause ingrown hairs. If you use a cart, you need to use a scrubby shaving brush or exfoliate, and never use a dull razor. Tugging is bad, it leads to ingrown hairs with carts.

    • @Magnulus76
      @Magnulus76 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on your skin. Traditional aftershave is more disinfecting and can also clue you into your technique, because it will give you lots of feedback. I save the balms for when my skin needs it- treating razor burn.
      Afta is a good compromise. It has enough alcohol to give a bit of a burn, but it also has moisturizers.

    I’ve tried so hard to use DE razor without causing razor burn. I’ve ended up spending a small fortune and time with different razors, blades and creams and watching TH-cam videos on how to use them and still get irritation. The only thing that doesn’t give me irritation is a 5 blade cartridge razor. Ended up spending more money than just sticking with cartridge razors. 😞

    Hi Nick
    Currently I pay around $35-40 a month to shave with cartridge razors. I saw the commercial with the Pawn Stars guy, and was intrigued. When I did research online your videos came up. Since you think its a good beginner safety razor, I'm going to try it. My question is on shaving cream. Currently I use C.O. Bigelow premium shave cream. Can I continue to use this brand with a safety razor?

    • @nickshaves
      @nickshaves  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CO Bigelow is a great soap! I HIGHLY recommend that you get a shaving brush to go with it - pick up an Omega Boar brush - this will greatly improve the quality of your lather and shave. Good luck with the safety razor! Let me know how it goes

    Hey Nick,
    I've been wet shaving for a few months now and no matter what I do, I get ingrown hairs on my neck. I use all the right products as well (DE razor, alcohol free products, boar and badger hair brushes). I have tried face lathering and bowl lathering, and I always get ingrown hairs in this one spot. I've noticed that the growth on my neck goes everywhere. I have cut down from a 3 pass to a 2 pass (with the grain/across the grain). The last thing I need to try is doing a 2 pass with the grain on my neck. I know you get bad irritation on your neck. Did you realize that going WTG on your neck is the only thing that works for you, so you don't get razor burn/ingrown hairs?
    Thanks,
    Nate from Minnesota

      Nate, thanks for posting! I hear your concerns, I am right there with you. I recommend only going with the grain on your neck with VERY light pressure and see how that works. Which razed do you use? It may be too aggressive. Also pick up some dorco plats. Make sure you soap is slick. Tons of foam means nothing without slickness. Try going with the grain only for a few passes. I'd recommend picking up an old Gillette tech. Very mild razor with great blades. It will be good until you get technique down

      ***** It was a technique thing. I had watched a bunch of videos on shaving before I bought the DE and guys were using upstrokes on their neck. I can't do that. If I do, I get the bumps no matter what the razor or blade.

    Is it beneficial at all to go multiple passes with the grain as oppose to against or across the grain? My neck is a disaster right now lol. I have only started using a safety razor this week. I'm using the Merker Progress, playing around with the various adjustments. I am wondering also if I should just crank it up to the top level, take my time and only go for one pass. I have a coarse beard and highly sensitive skin.

    • @reillyreilly7352
      @reillyreilly7352 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just started with a DE recently (1931 gillette goodwill) and noticed multiple passes with the grain don't help me. I have to at least go across the grain to get a closer pass. My neck looked terrible my first 2 shaves (with cheap blades). Then my personna blades arrived and I got a nice shaving cream and it's made a huge difference. I shaved again with the personna blades and a shave soap and got (some) irritation on my neck again. So I think the amount of glide your shaving cream/soap offers makes a real difference too.

    • @yardape99
      @yardape99 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny you mention Persona blades. I bought 100 pack of the medical prep ones made in the USA (not Israeli) and they are a really good blade. I also have a bunch of samplers from various companies (Feather, Astra, different GilIetes, Derby, etc). I think you're right about the lather soap. I have two different kinds of Proraso and Taylor of Old Bond Street coconut and the ToOBS works more effectively. Things have gotten better as far as technique goes as well.
      Have you ever tried cold water shaving? I started doing that a few weeks ago and haven't back to warm/hot water shaving. That may give you less irritation on your neck/face. I find that it has improved things for myself as the whiskers are more rigid and you're not opening your pores.
