    Please ignore the trolls who are suggesting something bad has happened to Nick (and even refer to his wife as a widow). He recently had a baby. Maybe that's why he hasn't been heard from.

      Thurman Reynolds I own several old manuals for the adjustable Gillette razors not one of them state you cannot turn the adjustment dial with the razor closed. In fact one particular manual (Gillette 195) states just the opposite. It states to start at “1” and dial up as you shave to find the perfect blade position for your beard. If you have a manual that states otherwise please provide the model number.

      I find it much harder to turn the adjustment dial with the door closed and LOCKED (that extra quarter turn after it's completely closed) then when I unlock it but leave it closed.

    Nick hasn't done a video in over a year. Busta and his bud the Christian shaving guy and other wet shavers seem to have disappeared. Schick KRONA early models had metal or plastic twist bottom and said KRONA on both blade doors. later models if i understood skipped the name on the doors.
    i have 2 plastic twist and one metal but all 3 say krona on the doors.
    i love them. if you haven't tried it you should. geometry is a bit different from Gillettes but once you dial it in its awesome!!! so glad you got to re-purpose your grandfather's stuff :-)
    FYI the knot on that worn brush can easily be replaced, but replaced with a knot that mimics the original may be difficult if it's a name brand brush.
    if its just a normal brush from back then, then you can easily have it re-knotted :-)

    Nick I absolutely love my slim adjustable. My favorite vintage razor.

  • @2010stoof
    @2010stoof 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    if you want to try something that sounds weird, but works for me.... turn the aggressiveness up with later passes. 1st at 4 like you did. second at 6-7 and final at 9. as along as you have a good blade you're comfortable with in there you'll be surprised how well it works. (can even start lower to end up on a lower number if your skin dictates.
    make sure you give it the extra 1/4 turn to lock in the blade. feels weird at first when coming from superspeeds or krona (normal butterflys) but all the gillette adjustables have to have the 1/4 turn.
    with the vintage adjustables you have to release the lock on the blade. there's always a 1/4 turn at the end of closing the doors that normal butterflys don't have that the adjustables have to lock in the blade. make sure you open that 1/4 turn at least to take pressure off before changing the dial. (if you look at how the mechanism changes the height of the "cap" to the plate it'll make more sense.

    • @TexTom1981
      @TexTom1981 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've got one and can tell you it's a beautiful piece of gear, but exTREMEly mild. It's engineered to be used with Feather Hi-Stainless blades. The combination can render fantastic shaves, but the angle of attack is a bit different from some of the other razors but once you find that, a one-pass shave isn't impossible. I've seen a couple of reviewers do the AS-D2 and they were funny...one (I think his name was Giovanni??) had someone loan theirs to him and he did his video with that...another one was a guy in his 50's who used the thing for the first pass ...liked it and for the second pass used a MÜHLE razor for the second pass....what's the point of THAT? But I can tell you that the Feather is a beautiful, mild razor. However, I'd also mention that it's not my daily shaver. I don't have a lot of razors (Edwin Jagger Kelvin, Merkur 34C-HD, Merkur 33C, Feather AS-D2 and Schick Krona [one of the last ones, I think]) and the Kelvin is by far my favorite to suit my face and technique with Astra SP blades. Just my personal experience and fave. If I've let my face go for a few days, I'll "fire up" the Feather (with Feather blades) and glide through the thick stuff with ease. But for BBS results, it's something you really have to work for because of the extremely narrow angle of attack to get the blade to do it's best work. Hope that's helpful.

    My question doesn't pertain to this video in particular , but since it is your latest upload I thought I would ask here first. I use the Rockwell 6c. On a 3 pass shave I go first with the grain, 2nd i go across the grain, on the third I go against the grain, (except for the mustache area). My trouble is on the second pass cross grain I have trouble on my neck, (mainly near the jaw bone because it is not flat there. Should I just go "with the grain" again on my neck area like I have seen you do? That dang jawbone structure is a pain to navigate across the grain..

    Do you have a link to the shave stand? Nothing is coming up on google. Those three (Black Super Speed, Slim, and Krona) razors must have been pretty popular. I also inherited those same tree from my grandfather.

    I bought a restored 1965 SuperSpeed from Razor Emporium. They did an amazing job restoring it and what a great shave. Incredibly easy to get the proper angle and is very comfortable.

    Maybe he grew a big beard and no longer shaves his face...and joined a beard cult. That would be the most likely logical explanation for his TH-cam disappearance...

    Hi Nick. Nice to see you back. I wish I had some shaving gear from my grandfather. He was born 2 years before King Gillette got the patent for his safety razor. Therefore my grandad could have had original gear from around the First World War., imagine. It's great you keep up memory of grandpa with his old razors and brush.💈👍🏼

    Recently got into DE wetshaving, and have ordered a second hand Gillette Slim Adjustable 1966 in fairly good condition. For the price I would have been close to getting a Rockwell 6C, but decided to go for the twist adjustment. The Rockwell 6C looks good on your videos, but anyway, I hope the Gillette Slim Adjustable 1966 will be just as good or even better.

    Hi Nick, I also had my grandfather's 1975 Black Beauty refurbished at Razor Emporium. It came back looking brand new. I use it for a head shave with a Gillette black DE blade. I use a 1948 Gillette Tech for my face with a Astra SP. Both great razors.

    Quick question. I been DE shaving for a while with the same products for a while (Merkur 34c and Astra Platinum blades) but, I feel I can get a closer shave. I don’t want to get crazy and end up owning 20 different blades, razors, soaps, brushes blah blah. I’m a bit of a minimalist. To try getting a closer shave should I get an other razor or try an other blade with my razor? Please let me know.

    I've got that same Gillette. I believe it is a 1961. I got mine at an antique store for about 15 bucks. used it every single day during my deployment last year. was one of my favorite razors until I got my Merkur 39c. I think 39, or 37... can't remember, but that Gillette.... I always shaved 3 passes on 3. Good on you for getting your granddads. It is a fantastic razor.

    Everyone is right in saying that you should not adjust the razor with the doors closed but there are not any gears in this razor or any Gillette twist open razor. Adjusting with the doors closed puts extra strain on the adjustment tray and what Gillette called the “spider assembly” which is a rod running through the handle of the razor that is attached to the razor doors. This rod is screwed and unscrewed by the knob at the bottom of the handle. This pushes the spider assembly up and down and allows the doors to open and close. Sorry, I restore vintage razors in my spare time so I’m kind of a Gillette nerd lol

    Great video Nick! My late Dad had a Gillette Black Beauty from the 1970's that he used to use. One day I decided to get it and clean it up and use it to shave on his Birthday, Father's Day, Memorial Day, and Veteran's Day. But I started using it more often and now I have it in rotation with my other razors cause it shaves so well! Your Grandfather would be proud!

    Gillette made some terrific razors, but the Slim Adjustable is my favorite--certainly the best one I've used. If I had sell all my razors and only keep one model, I would keep the Slim Adjustable.

    Dr. Nick, don’t want to repeat what has already been posted, however they are correct. The doors must be open when you adjust a Gillette. Also, if you want to know the date of the razor, look for the letter and number on the bottom of the base plate. Razor Emporium has a Gillette date code on their website.

    I'm just getting into DE razors (to save my skin, and money)
    My question is, I know a lot of people use a stand for the brush and razor (and the brush bit makes sense because the bristles are facing down) but to me I think it would make more sense to lay the razor horizontally rather than vertical so the razor can dry properly ? Thoughts?
    (This is with the basic 1 brush 1 razor holder as well, not that monster you have haha)
