The Nuclear Frontier: Securing America’s Energy Future

  • America’s energy future is shining a little brighter after the recent passage of the bipartisan ADVANCE Act to bolster U.S. nuclear power production. The new law seeks to broaden how America generates power, creating a more resilient infrastructure to meet the surging energy demands driven by data centers, electric vehicles and reshored factories.
Of course, the law isn’t without its critics or competition. Concerns have been raised about potential safety issues and challenges related to nuclear waste. On the other hand, there are those who worry the newest law doesn’t go nearly far enough to catch up to the likes of India or China as they far outpace the U.S. in building nuclear reactors. In China alone, there are 27 nuclear reactors currently under development. The question now is: where do we go from here?
How can nuclear power help the United States meet unprecedented electricity demands? What changes should be made to the regulatory process without sacrificing safety and environmental concerns? And as the case for energy independence increasingly becomes one of national security, how can the United States ensure it doesn’t fall behind in the global clean energy race?
Join The Hill as we convene clean energy experts, and executives to answer these questions and more.

Good discussion and panel. If only politicians could see past the next election cycle and private industry see past the quarterly profits.

The biggest problem is with nuclear is it's too cheap and abundant and clean. No one can make any money off it.

As a supervisor in Reactor plant operations, I say the following with long term optimism and short term pessimism:
Unfortunately building a multi billion dollar power plant to sell power at a slightly higher cost than other fossil fuel plants is not economically viable for a privately or publicly traded company. Nobody is willing to have a 10-40% electricity cost increase in the short run, in order to have potentially 50% smaller power bills in 20+ years for basically 80 years. The payoff is after the plant is paid off in terms of financing. Read up on the westinghouse bankrupty in 2017. Profitable nuclear only occurs after the plant is paid off.
The government needs to invest in its own infrastructure then the country will reap the rewards. Our public bridges are rated 2/10 in terms of likeihood to not collapse. We overspend a federal budget by trillions each presidency, and we just gave over 100 billion to Ukraine, with another deal for over 60 billion more. USA throws money at whatever hot topic is in front of its face more than bass bite on fishing lures. Eventually nuclear will get the same attention.

Nuclear is almost all we need. I'm just waiting for nuclear fusion reactors.

it's all wishy washy hot air - no concrete plans how to invigorate the sector, even at the level of the ITIF report
