Hello, good video, thank you. Practical question: I am trying to learn to fight with a staff as well, but it is not taught within any kali group in Prague, wherefore I am supplanting it with aikido training in the short jo staff of about 130cm in length. The problem is that we only practice predetermined and fixed movements, on partners who vary distance after each attack so as to get some sense of that, but never sparring of free variation and definitively not full contact neither. How would you adapt sparring to hard, bone-breaking wooden staffs where main attack patterns are stabs? Do you know of any softer material analogous to what you use but for a staff format?

Thank you for the question. Sorry it took so long to reply.
I can't think of anything that could be a substitute for sparring. My advice would be to find a sparring partner and try and put the principles of FMA into the movements of your aikido staff.
The first time you do this you'll immediately run into many many problems. Nothing will be as clean as when you practiced it without resistance. But that's exactly what sparring is for. To give you a safe space within which to try and find the answers to these questions.
An easier solution might be to find a dog brothers group near you. They spar with staffs as well.
Im sorry I can't be more helpful, i am a very strong believer in sparring. Without it everything is merely theory.

In a real fight you got a hit from a stick, will knock out your teeth, cause serious head trauma. Defense is first. I trade one blow to my arm for one blow to his head. You are doing a fine job, but your students are careless about defense. At least you are using helmets, that is very good. In competition a point is a hit to the head. A hit to the body is less efective. Imagine fighting knife vs knife. That is very dangerous.

      Great you train for that.
I'm going to train to not get hit while I hit your hand so you either drop your weapon or can't move it as effectively and then I'll hit your head safely without worrying about you hitting me.
