The 88mm gun was a very cool device for its time. It was originally an anti-aircraft gun and was designed to shoot high-altitude fragmentation lasers at high speed. Then they realized that if an armor-piercing projectile was used, it would shoot out the armored devices of the time perfectly. The Tiger tanks were also equipped with an 88 mm cannon. And the Russians also redesigned the T-34 tanks from a shorter barreled 76mm gun to an 85mm. The II. In the 1-2 decades after World War II, they used their anti-aircraft bed 88 for anti-tank. For example, in 1956 during the Hungarian revolution.

It was also armed with a 76.2 mm gun, but was fitted with a British 17-pounder anti-aircraft gun, which had a barrel twice as long as the original gun. That gun was also able to effectively knock out Tiger and Panther tanks. It was mainly used by the English and Canadians. Also, there was a 105 mm cannon version, but it was short-barreled and mainly an infantry support tank, which was loaded with shrapnel ammunition.

The 105MM Sherman was classified as an assault gun since it was mounting a howitzer instead of an actual tank gun. I'm currently reading "Patton's Vanguard" about the 4th Armored Division. It gives the T/O of all the units which lists manpower and equipment. It mentioned the 105s were assigned to each of the tank battalions.
I'll add a small contribute to this discussion: Italy too had an AA cannon, called 90/53 (90mm diameter, 53 calibers or 4,7mt barrel lenght) which underwent the same anti tank "evolution" of the german 88mm, meaning it was intended firstly as AAA and later on anti tank stations, tank destroyers/artillery (m41) and was even installed trucks (breda 52, lancia 3Ro). From this gun was derived a saying - "Pezzo da 90" (lit. Piece sized 90) - that is still common nowadays to indicate something is of high importance or value, basically if someone says that something/someone is a pezzo da 90 it means that it/he is the real deal
Late in the war, a small number of Sherman tank hulls were topped with the turret developed for the M36 Jackson, with a 90 mm gun. They were called the M36B1

However, many tanks from the states involved in the war had this problem. Because of this fire hazard, the Sherman was nicknamed “Ronson” by the crews (a well-known lighter brand with the advertising slogan: “Ronson always burns!”), and the Germans called it “Tommykocher”. It was only in the M4s manufactured from the beginning of 1944 that this weakness was solved by attaching water containers to the ammunition storage compartments. The one issue that may have spurred this is British tankers overloading their lend-lease Shermans with ammo. The Sherman had unarguably one of the best survival rates for crew of the war, only short of crap like the Churchill - infact, I'd arguably say they were safer than German armour.
Actually when the Germans were found the tanks would have been pulled back and artillery and air strike would have been called in. It's called Combined Arms.

I see there noe 8,8 Pack L43.....only 7,5 Pack and some 7,5er in the Panzerkampfwagen 4. And Shermans without Arty-and Airsupport, oder Infantrie at their side^^.
Bruh the sherman was a good tank in ww2 it had a good 80% survival rate way better than the t34s 15% survival rate. And yes the wet stowage ammunition wasn't introduced until 1944 when a lot of sherman tanks suffered a catastrophic cook off of the ammunition when it was hit thus kiling the entire crew. Finally it was resolved, but most British and American crews like the sherman due to its availability in large numbers and the reputation as a lighter or a tank always cooked off is dismissed as a myth.

Mein Vater hat erzählt, wenn er mit der 88 auf einen Sherman geschossen hat, ging das Geschoß vorne rein und hinten wieder raus! Die Hitzeentwicklung war dabei so groß, dass die Besatzung aus 4 Mann regelrecht verbrannte.
Ja, das hat man damals nicht an die große Glocke gehängt. Und heute auch nicht. Sonst setzt sich keiner mehr in diese eisernen Särge. Wenn der Turm vom Panzer abhebt, ist der Druck im Innern so groß, das die Besatzung sich regelrecht auflöst.

When the Shermans ran into the PAKfront why didn't they call in artillery fire? And they seemed to do too little firing.

Nonsense. Tankers had a higher survivability rate than infantry.
