    I don't know about you guys, but I'd like to see those "confetti" shavings turning into a knife handle!

    Recycle the shavings and put it in resin and make a cake cutter handle. Very festive. Or maybe a confetti wine bottle opener.

    That's cool! YOu should try dipping Honey Comb in resin, and making some sort of knife scale. That would be so rad!

      It's a cool pattern to be sure, but the problem is that the wax might melt during the curing process, or you might just end up with something really transparent.

    I have made pens out of paper before. Usually it was when I only had an ink cartridge left in my pencil case. I rolled A4 paper around the ink cartridge and then taped it down at the end.
    Yours is a little fancier though I guess :p

    When I was younger I lived in an apartment complex where this guy was always gluing and pressing cardboard together then using that in the same way one would use wood to build furniture. I remember he made a giant dresser shaped like Gumby that had a fish tank built into it. Your work reminds me a lot of that period. The micarta technique is really cool and I think it would be a perfect fit for pressing skateboard decks. Try looking at some real decks in a skateshop and try making one with micarta. I think it could turn out really well.

    • @im_noah_lynx

      Laynie Fingers the shavings from the turning would be cool too

    • @ganaraminukshuk0
      @ganaraminukshuk0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm reminded of a frank howarth segmented bowl with a chevron pattern; how one section of the chevron pattern was made could be done with micarta for that angled look. (Of course, it can also be squared before being turned.)

    • @fortj3
      @fortj3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      An angle plate would allow drilling the blank at an angle.
      That would allow the blank to be turned on the bias, creating the color transitions you describe.

    What about a shovel/spade made out of dirt and resin?

    • @sleeptyper
      @sleeptyper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Remember the gummy bear axe? Just as strong...

    • @UCGhy34YYL0R3LirWIvhvxng
      @UCGhy34YYL0R3LirWIvhvxng 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The gummy bear axe didn't work out because:
      1. Resin itself just isn't strong enough (or at least I don't think so), and there were lots of pockets of nothing but resin
      2. Gummies aren't a very strong material (that we can agree on) and they took up a lot of the volume of the handle, sometimes with not enough resin between them.
      Dirt and resin _could_ work somewhat like cement, if mixed together very well. Usually the smaller the particles, and the less space between them (filled with resin) the better, so it might just work. At least for the handle, the actual diggy bit made of dirt and resin probably wouldn't withstand the erosion of digging into dirt.

    • @sleeptyper
      @sleeptyper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      B0NEZ
      It sure might be doable as an object - but as a working tool for intended use, i doubt it. :)
      A shovel might have some actual structural rigidity if the dirt is supplemented or completely replaced with fibrous plant compost. But even then - as you mentioned - the lifetime would be short.

    • @8ytan
      @8ytan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +BONEZ A cement axe/spade handle wouldn't work very well, either, though.

    • @doubledarefan
      @doubledarefan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mix in some plant fibers.
      A small shovel, like what you would use for potting plants, would be totally doable. Make the blade a bit thicker than usual, and it would be at least as good as the plastic garden shovels that you can buy. Maybe do this as a C-mas gift for Mrs. Brown.

    A beautiful looking pen!
    I'd love to see something made out of glitter (or sequins) suspended in resin. The chunky kind of glitter that is fairly transparent (apart from a holographic/iridescent sheen) would look really cool I think :)

    • @Shopcat22
      @Shopcat22 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Brown That would be neat. It would be pretty trippy on the eyes too. I wonder how well it would work if it was made thinner. I have a few projects in mind that I need some super thin material for (less than 1/8"). I may have to give it a whirl some time. Thanks for the inspiration.

    • @Landogarner83
      @Landogarner83 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Waylight Creations
      I know the relationship of micarta and scroll saw mainly from cutting selfmade circuitboards to shape. Those are typically 1.5mm thick but astonishingly sturdy. They also are not that expensive so maybe worth a try to test something easier to get than the selfmade stuff.

  • @BubbaRye

    Peter, I've come to get so excited every time I see a new video from you in my feed. From someone who works in the 'high-fashion' clothing industry where everything I patternmake seems very disposable season to season, it's a pleasure to see you experiment with unique materials to create lasting products. Yet, your accepting attitude toward the often fallible nature of experimentation (things blowing up into hundreds of pieces) is quite inspiring - definitely motivating! It's very true that few things work first time, or last forever, but it is the excitement and the experience of experimentation that really matters! Stay creative, we love it.

  • @ka.rljohnson
    @ka.rljohnson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You should make another pen/project where the layers of micarta are angled relative to the turning axis, so that you get more interesting patterns than just concentric circles. You could also purposefully deform the original sheet of micarta (like a wavy pattern or something) so that when you plane it, the layers of paper/whatever look like Damascus steel.

    Ooh! Ooh! I have an idea! Make a complete scrabble set (including the pieces, tile holder, and game board) out of the materials you use frequently like wood, resin, epoxy, micarta, polyurethane, etc.

      Seriously, though, you could probably make some nice blanks out of oven-dried or freeze-dried fruit.

    Hi. Just bought myself some west systems resin. What's the mixing ratio for it ? Doesn't say on the thing that comes with the kit I bought

    • @peterbrownwastaken
      @peterbrownwastaken  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need the pumps! It makes it some much easier. Most places that sell the resin also sell the pumps. Then it's just one pump of each.

      Paper beads are so much fun to make! What kind of paper do you like to use the most? Which glue? I love using basic magazines and Mod Podge Gloss, especially magazines like Victoria or National Geographic because the pictures have such great vibrancy and there are more pages with pictures on them.

    Hey, Peter. I really love your videos, and your dip it series inspired me to dip things in epoxy. I've been using it for about a year to make guitar picks and they work great. I'm using just simple universal resin, it's not quite that clear and pretty, but considering it needs to be extremely thin and still doesn't break, it works great. Thanks for all the stuff you do for us here,on youtube.
