Melvin is not criticising collecting items that remind you of good times. It's criticising BURYING yourself in nostalgia, to DISTRACT yourself from your current infirmities. That's what he means by becoming stagnant.
The fact you couldn't see that is telling.

It's easy, because the "Real world" hurts. plus, what exactly is "Real" anyway? life is what we make of it. if someone finds happiness in Collecting, Video games, Movies, whatever.. then why shit on that? its better than putting all your happiness into someone else. they'll just cheat on you once they know you can't live without them. or break up with you. or you'll find out about something they've done and break up with them. if you put all your time and effort into a Job, that job will crumble one way or another.. or you'll become sick of it. nothing is forever, everything sucks, we're all dust in the wind. make the best of the time you've got. or don't. we're all gonna die and be forgotten regardless.

This episode completely illustrates why i always felt grossed out by people using nostalgia as an excuse to exert themselves or deny pain. We can never move on by thinking and living simpler times, it may hurt but we have to confront our pains and face the reasons we lay around and do nothing all day. For me it was being denied that i was in pain, being abused and forced to stay in contact with my abuser for the majority of my life, it hurt too much so i just sat down and played games all day, but eventually i broke my cycle and confronted the abuse, cut off those who hurt me, and moved on. I am now literally making rockets.

Glad you moved on, but I believe we should try not to cast judgment on one another. I had a rough life too, and it is very easy for me to move on into something new and recreate myself. My brother is a completely different person that lived through a lot of the same things I did, just through a different lens...he isn't able to do that(rn anyway), so he is similar to the guys in the video. I don't judge him because I know what he's been through, I do push him to be the star I know he can be though. It's not always as simple as "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps ". Sometimes it's more complicated. I see it as life's not a sprint, for most it's a marathon. Some people just take time to realize their actual potential, ya know?!

God u can't go anywhere without hearing ppl constantly blabber about mental health. I always find it weird that when the left gets OBSESSED with something they ruin it. Mental health is the new one. And now everyone is mentally ill, more than ever before and big pharma gets rich. It's gone up by nearly A THOUSAND PERCENT in 4 years. None in third world countries tho. Or what about racism. Now there's more racism than the 40s. The black community, their neighborhoods were burned down. The border, now it's broken. LGBTQ, now it's blown up and kids r drug in. Women's rights, now they r forced to have men in their spaces even prison cells. Locked up with male sex offenders that force themselves on them. Ukraine, 150 THOUSAND gone. I mean it goes on and on. Kids in cages? Fast forward 3 years, and u have HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of kids trafficked and locked up. Blows my mind. Don't even get me started on policies...

A Time perhaps where we felt like we mattered most. But you're right it can become an all-consuming deity of its own, and one that can eventually take over if you let it. Sapping our lives of real ongoing experiences or meaningful connections. Deep powerful stuff.

I didn't actually expect this to tackle nostalgia and the people chasing it in the way it did. I kind of relate to this video in a different way since I don't feel nostalgia because of loss of memories and concussion, and I see everyone else always chasing nostalgia and I think people should just focus on moving forward in life. Good episode I love this show and I think it's good a lot of interesting takes and messages.

Nostalgia eventually betrays you. You can only spend so long on killing the noise in your head instead of sitting with the feelings and thoughts. Before you realize, the things you used to enjoy don't feel as good anymore. The noise comes back because while you were hiding from it, it only grew worse. Honestly, loss never really stops hurting. But, we can still get better. It's ok to hurt when it comes. It's ok to feel empty when you miss who is gone. But only by feeling the pain do we let that lots become a part of ourselves. And that's something that we can carry in honor of those who left before us. We loved them. We still do. It hurts to love them, but that's ok.

Hey meat canyon, i dont know if youre ever gonna read this comment but thanks for making this animation along with your team. It really gave me perspective about holding on to joyful things I lost and the idea of letting go feeling more of an appreciation rather than a desperate attempt to never feel hurt again. I find it so invigorating how you perfectly visualise the concept of memories having power to trap you or push you forward in life.
Whenever the scenary changes grey for Melvin, it signifies memories. You can be haunted by it, use coping mechanisms to shut the pain out and be obsessed with shutting pain out. Or, you can simply appeciate that theres still good memories in those darkest moments that makes you stronger to face reality in the present. Its not an easy thing to do if someone in the present is stuck with little to no control over negative events in their life. But to escape is to rejuvenate so you can come back to face reality stronger, however, if youre not careful, it can trap you forever.
Beautifully done, meat canyon. Beautifully done.

"A big majority of us." Everyone else above doesn't know that people go through this and think they are a main character thinking "us" is talking to only them living a miserable, and closeminded life as a grain of sand that can be replaced by millions of grains of sand, to be fair the grain of sand has more purpose than the people that say "Us? WhO Is uS?" which includes you, also the term "us" still doesn't go to your thick skull, as you are stubborn as a mule that us means "used by a speaker to refer to himself or herself and one or more other people as the object of a verb or preposition." The commenter is talking about the people that own anime figures and buy them to cope for their lives and past trauma. This can even be related to people buying only fans pictures to cope. To be fair her use of us is kind of confusing and should have been more clear when addressing the people they were talking about but it is simple on what this person is talking about. To add saying "us" makes you feel kind of guilty and questioning about you acting the same on impulse buying for trauma. I'll give the benefit of doubt you don't.
P.S.If you don't want to read all that it is just me saying "Nah I'd win, you failed rapscallion. Don't just buy things to cope."

This hit way too close to home for me. This was (somewhat still is?) me for a LONG time. I grew up poor and disabled, had 70 surgeries by the time I was 25 (38 now and at like 84), and while I always liked nostalgia, it didn't hit the breaking point until I became disabled at like 28 and couldn't leave my house for very long for like 10 years.
I was stuck in our "gameroom", which just turned into my sanctuary, so I filled it with things that reminded me of the past or things that I felt made me happy. But it got to the point where sections of the room were blocked off due to so much crap and my walls were all completely covered with fan art or large comic pictures.
At the end of last year, we moved to another state so I could get away from the extreme heat of the south and to go somewhere where marijuana was legal (I got to the point where I was abusing my pain meds because they barely worked due to my body being on medications my entire life.)
It's been like a completely different life here. The marijuana takes away most of my pain most days, and I can't actually go outside again to the point my wife and I been going on hiking trails or to the waterfront a couple times a week. I still have really rough mornings, and some days where I can't get off the couch, but I've gotten another chance at life.
I still have my "man cave", but it's much more organized and only a fraction of what I did have up. The rest of my collection is in storage and I've been slowly selling it off.
As someone else said, sometimes life is just hard and breaks you to the point where you want to escape into a world of your own making.

@GeekExtremist I’m glad you found peace man… I struggle with hoarding too. I have been through a lot of traumatic loss. My grandparents are gone (even tho that’s expected they were like a second set of parents), my mom unexpectedly died when I was 15, my older brother was hit & killed by a train… I hoard shit to fulfill that gaping spiritual wound in my heart. I struggle to throw away something as silly as a tang/iced tea pitcher my mom had when it broke… when it’s just another piece of plastic polluting this world. I don’t need it. I have memories, her writings, & paintings… but I have trouble discerning what to throw out & keep when the line is greyer (old mail to my mom from 2003, grocery lists she wrote, etc)… I’m in the process of purging my room because it got too cluttered, & despite making some significant progress I have an extremely hard time throwing some stuff out or donating it. 😔 ik a lot of people may look at people like you & I as unkept & messy, but I just want you to know that I understand your struggle bro… not with your physical disabilities but your hoarding issues I understand how toxic it can be & how much of a big step it was for you to do what you did… as the professor dude Jordan Peterson (if you dunno him you should look him up) said; “your room reflects your mind”… & he’s absolutely 💯 on that.
& also, congrats on getting away from opioids too… I was self medicating with fentanyl & methamphetamine for a while, & I made the step to get medical help & get on suboxone & prescription amphetamines like adderall/vyvanse… I’d smoke weed too but unfortunately I’m on supervised release with the Feds. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you you’re not really in recovery if you use cannabis. Addiction is kinda misunderstood even in AA/NA… we use because we are medicating ourselves, & you switched to a safer & non addictive alternative instead of going down the road of opioid use… society & the government heavily discriminate against opioid users & because of that it’s easy to get into a shit ton of legal issues & put yourself in danger by using unregulated substances laced with unknown amounts of fentanyl, xylazine, or toxic cutting agents. my friend almost died once because her dope was laced with arsenic & she smoked it. I wish you the best life bro don’t ever doubt yourself✌🏻💯😁‼️

After he died, we cleaned out hundreds of model trains, hundreds of pounds of sheet music, and over 5k vinyl records. Most of them were in bad shape because he didn't bother to store them correctly. My dude this stuff is easily your best work. You get to bring the dark humor and grotesqueries that define your style but it's tied into this heartfelt, human story starring just a goofy, sweet little guy. I love it.

What he did was reasonable grief. He processed the way he did then honored his lil buddy the best he could. Rock on Melvin!

I know these dont get as much views as your other video's, but I genuinly believe the melvin stuff is the best thing you've ever made on this channel. Excellent work
