I used to manage a self-storage facility. There were times when I tried to talk people out of renting. If you can go a month without the things you are going to store, then you don't need it. Many units go to auction. In Florida, your stuff is gone after non-payment of 2 months.
For family owned theaters the concessions are the only way they make money. The movie studios get most of the ticket sales. Support your local family owned theaters.
Let's give Rachel the benefit of the doubt that she does not understand the film distribution business. But yeah, someone should educate her about how the money flows. On a first run movie, 90% of the ticket sales goes to the distributor. The theater makes their money on popcorn and junior Mints.
I agree. Our local independent cinema makes almost all of their money on sweets and drinks. We always buy a lot of treats and never bring anything, because we love it and want to keep it. They charge a third of the price for tickets compared to the national cinema, so we do not mind at all. And we get warm popcorn and potato snacks!
i have a storage unit. i am moving and i am not going to toss and have to buy again later. have stripped my house to the nubbins. will sell it empty so the realtor can sell it with the new owners to imagine their own stuff in. unit will stay in place while i find a place 1200 miles away. they have their place.
As someone with arthritis the Dyson hairdryer is so much lighter and easier to hold than the less expensive versions! Also works better and dries my hair more quickly which makes the whole experience much easier for me and my limitations.
My Dyson Animal is 14 yrs old, still works better than any other vacuum I’ve ever had. I will buy another one when it finally dies. Oh, and they’re cheaper now than when I first bought it.
Came to the comments to say this! I grew up with terrible hand me down vacuums and my Dyson animal vacuum is something that I need/use/love. I bought it at Costco so it was a decent deal.
I agree. I brought a number of cheap vacuum cleaners that either broke or didn’t work before getting a Dyson. It has lasted years and is really high performance
I am with you on the vacuum, same with kids clothing, yep, I agree! We try and avoid going to the big movie theaters and instead go to our local family owned theaters. Insurance is frustrating! Glad this option is available for those who can’t afford traditional health care.
My daughter and i rarely go to the movie theater, but when we do go, im fine with buying her snacks there. We just went on Sunday and the tickets were $5 each and I bought her a kid combo which was a small popcorn, bag of gummy candy, and small drink for $6 plus a large icee for my sister and my daughter to share for $7.
My Dad owned both a Dyson and a Shark and he said that the Shark was by far better and lasted longer. So we went with the Shark. We were pleasantly surprised at how well it worked and for the cost
Yes. Parents waste so much money on name brand clothes that kids or teens are just going to out grow! Little ones wearing North Face or under armour clothes... ridiculous! 🙄 My parents didn't get me nice clothes or shoes until I was in high-school. They were very frugal.
My parents didn't get any brand name stuff for us at my very brand oriented elementary school. I survived. I also got gifted (from friends) a pencil bag and a book bag from the "it" brands for my birthday that staved off some of the worst of the ridicule from horrid children. Of a parent can afford it, a single bougie item for a kid might be a nice splurge, while still teaching kids that this is unnecessary and being budget-concious and frugal is better.
Or just but name brands at huge discounts at Costco. Just bought under armour leggings for $10 recently. Costco has Banana Republic, Addidas, Lucky, Levi’s at a huge discount. They have kids clothes from good brands too. Such a huge savings. Love Costco❤
Sorry, but I have to disagree with you about the Dyson. My wife and I ran an in-home dog sitting business for over seven years, having thousands of dogs come through the house. The Dyson Torque 11 was the only vacuum that could reliably pick up all that hair and dirt from outside. Moreover, it has never failed!
a red devil or similiar is not the same as a dyson or shark--I've bought cheap and pricey (on sale) and like some generic foods, some cheap vacuums are not good value long term. Now--I did find a used shark $25 at a Habitat Restore that has been great!
This is true! For all my adult life I used a cheap brand hair dryer. My husband surprised me with a shark hair dryer and it was life changing. He got it on sale at Costco. 🥳
I really like my Dyson air wrap. I legit use it at least once a day! It’s great and I expect the engineering design to be robust enough to last a lifetime.
I’ve been the dinosaur experience that you are referring to. It was horrible! I scraped and saved to be able to afford it for my kids and it was devastating to see what a waste of money and a family day that it was.
Going to the movies imo is a waste of money. I wait until its on a streaming account to watch and i can make my own popcorn and bring my own candy and i dont have to deal with other people and can watch it in my jammies on my couch
For me, it's the opposite. I'm not going to watch a movie (hardly any TV) unless I'm actually at the movies. It's time spent with a loved one. I don't really snack so I don't have to worry about buying food. The show is walking distance from my house so there's no transportation costs involved. Plus, it's only a few times a year, at most.
Many years ago, when a Dyson Vacuum was $650 at Costco, I gave it a try. My $129.00 Shark Navigator picked up all the fine dirt that the Dyson missed. I returned the Dyson and went back to my trusted Shark. I also buy NYDJ, yep $130 a pair, but, I find them new on eBay for around $36.00. I take good care of them, hang them to dry and they fit like a dream. Store brands are not cut to fit me.
Omg the DYSON! I had the cordless Dyson for a few years before it finally gave up. I switched to a cheap corded shark vacuum and (surprise) it works so much better. Of course, maybe the Dyson ball corded is better, but with 3 kids and 2 dogs I’m fine with spending a little bit on a cheap shark every couple years
I've got 2 kids and 3 pets (1 labrador and 2 cats). I've had the ball Dyson, Vax and Shark. I find Shark has been the best. It really gets every single hair up. It's amazing on carpet flooring and I wouldn't bother trying any other brand now.
No Dyson vacuums are 100% worth it. My first one lasted 10 years before I sold it (for $100) to upgrade to a cordless one which I’ve had for 3 years now. All previous vacuums lasted a year before they stopped working.
I bought some kind of Shark upright corded at Costco or bjs on sale for 99 dollars in 2017. It’s been great. And we have 6 cats, and two dogs, major shedding going on here…
Oh right. A kid broke a part banging it on the stairs not lifting it up enough. So I bought that part for 30 dollars used online within the past year. Great little vacuum.
As someone who lives in the UK, most houses have a lot of carpet flooring, so a strong, rotating brush head is a must, especially if you have pets (I have a labrador, 2 cats and young children). I've had Shark, Vax and Dyson vacuums. The Shark has been the best for us, so far. But Dyson isn't far off, I just think they are a little overpriced. Vax is a little lacking for a messy, hairy house, but would probably be fine for a home without children and pets. So yes, I will continue to splurge on vacuums, thank you very much.
Rachel 😭, I am usually on your side, but you have clearly ever owned a Dyson or bought the United Cheeseboard which is $10 and a toddler tantrum saver! It's a super good value.
The absolute biggest waste of money is Starbucks… or should I say overpriced coffee flavored dessert. Learn to like real coffee and get a cup for $2 or better yet buy some good beans and brew at home for a fraction of that.
Maybe it’s use my experience with Dyson but mine has lasted almost 20 years and stiill going. Before that, I will have to buy a new vacuum cleaner once every two years because it’s simply will stop working. If you do the math, I would’ve spent close to 1400. Instead, I spent $400.
Its funny you say that. We just got rid of 11 yards of junk and completely cleaned out a storage unit we have had so long we could have built our own building.
Buying movie theater food is a move for dating, not for marriage. And if you date a homebody, it's not even relevant. I did invest in collectibles when I worked fast food, but only because I worked opening & closing and got a free meal as a perk - so I ordered the meals with the toys, with an investment of pure sweat equity. Some of them are now valued at $100+ and climbing.
The biggest money pit in my family over the last 20 years has been Starbucks. My daughter is addicted to spending money in general, and thinks she needs that cup with the whatever design on it.
I’m with you on the clothes thing. Most of my clothes are thrifted. If you go to thrift stores in upscale neighborhoods, you can find all the high dollar labels. My friend and I used to call one particular store “Dillards” because all the rich ladies would dump their out of season clothing, shoes and purses there. I once found a $350 pair of Italian name brand shoes sold at Nordstrom. They were like new for $8. Nobody, except my closest friend, knows how we could possibly have two lovely homes that are 100% paid for. It’s possible! I’ve followed your Dad’s advice for many years. We didn’t get any inheritance or win the lottery. Many years of hard work and consistent saving and living below my means. It really does work!
Hi! Just wondering if you ever got your dream pool you’ve been saving for? We’re looking into saving for one, but it’s almost worth it to just move to house with a pool we really like instead. Lol.
Although, I do agree with the fact that movie theaters charge a ton for food, that is how they are making money and staying in business. They aren’t really making anything off of the movie itself. So, I do like to support them but I also don’t want to pay that much. We usually bring in our own candy and then buy a big bucket of popcorn to share as a family. They usually provide extra bags or cups so you can divide it up. Plus, the popcorn is so yummy.
It is illegal to bring in your own food to movie theaters. People have been arrested for it. Theaters don't make any money on showing the movies. They make it all on the concessions.
Big waste... newest model of phone.... and I'll just say it, all things Apple. They literally buy some of their tech from Samsung, nickel and dime you for everything, and literally Samsung has ALL the same features at a lower price point. There's a reason most tech nerds say Android.
Come and bring your son to the Indianapolis Children's Museum and he will really get his Dinosaur cravings satisfied! It is one of the best Museums around.
Woot woot!!! I know that dress from amazon! Rock'n it Rachel!!! For long travel, I do splurge on my unbound merino wool leggings; they just never stink and can dry in .2 seconds. 🤣
I can agree on most of these but I will sort of disagree on some of them. When it comes to collectibles, the problem is some people got very excited a few years ago when the prices of collectibles were soaring and then the the market corrected itself and prices dropped. Now you can still make money in collectibles but what many of these people didn't realize is it takes work to move them whether its setting up at a convention and dealing for a full weekend or listing items on ebay, it takes more work than many of these people thought it would. As far as name brand jeans I tend to think your better off paying for a better quality product that is proven to last vs a cheaper one. A solid pair of jeans from a name brand whose products have been proven to last will save you more in the long run than continuously buying cheaper jeans that just fall apart after so many months. As far as movie theaters and bringing in food, yes I have done it but you have to realize the concession's is how the theaters make money and not from the ticket sales themselves. If we want to continue to have the experience of going to the movies we need to support movie theaters by purchasing from the concession stand.
I disagree about jeans. Jeans do go through trends and if you are blessed with a body that looks great in any kind of jeans you put on, buy cheap trendy jeans. Most of us honestly have a style that looks best on us. I think if you know high-waisted skinny jeans look best on you, buy some high quality ones that will last at least until they are popular and easy to find again and skip the super low cut bell bottoms. Those are just examples. Buy whatever looks good on your body type and invest in a few quality pices instead of trends that are junk. Doing this will probably cost less in the long run .
The shark vacuum turned out to be a guppy for us. So many repairs, replacement parts, clogs, ect. Never again. I can’t figure out why so many commenters like these?!? Oh wait. They probably don’t have five kids elementary school and younger, and vacuum at least once a day 😂😂😂. Can’t survive without our Dyson.
You tell people over and over of how to save money and conserve money and they just won't listen I have a friend that now lives for the last 2 years in Arizona when he was originally from New York for 20 years after that had moved to Florida because his girlfriend had health issues and there was another reason why they had to move to the desert of Arizona as of last week he's homeless and his girlfriend's been in the hospital for 3 weeks and didn't know until yesterday that if she ever leaves the hospital she has no place to live now he put her in a bad spot and she put herself in a bad spot too because speaking of storage units he was paying well almost paying for two large storage units that cost $200 a month each which meant that's $400 a month one of the units has a car and the other one has their belongings and some furniture and stuff like that bulky stuff now he had called me last week to help him to pay for 10 days of rent which turned out to be a little over $400 but because it wasn't paid by a certain day the hotel that they were staying at charge the late fee legal fees and it ended up being 649 and change and I paid that to him so he could stay there until July 3rd because as of noon time the manager was kicking him out the guy didn't care if you had a place to go or not so the moral of my story is don't go above your means when you only make a little bit of amount of money like 788 a month each with you and your girlfriend and expect to pay $408 in front every single week they're already over the amount that they owe so I have no idea how they did pay the storage facility fees because he just got a call yesterday from the storage facility saying oh I'm sorry if you can't come up with the money of 1250.00 in 48 hours everything in the storage units is going to auction and then he had the nerve to call me and ask me for the money and I said I'm sorry I don't have it and now he's allowed to stay at the hospital with his girlfriend and two dogs that they both have better emotional support animals and there's a shower in the hospital room so he gets to take a shower sleep on a chair in air conditioning and he gets her free meals that she really can't eat most of cuz she's not well and the security guard knows the story and said it's okay for him to stay there😮😮😮😮😮😮

Yeah I bought a $400 Dyson… only to have to spend an extra $50 for new lithium battery 🔋
So Rachel’s advice is to teach your children about breaking the law by sneaking in outside food and drink into the movies🤣
😅
I buy my leggings from sams/costco.
I have expensive workout gear and as a swimmer the expensive suits last so much longer
I buy $120 running shoes.
Dejunk!
I don’t buy anything on this list!
Dyson vac worth every nickel, and much cheaper in long run.
I've had clients with almost $1 million claims...a 22-year-old recently. Are you a licensed agent/broker? Be careful...each case is different.
You tell people over and over of how to save money and conserve money and they just won't listen I have a friend that now lives for the last 2 years in Arizona when he was originally from New York for 20 years after that had moved to Florida because his girlfriend had health issues and there was another reason why they had to move to the desert of Arizona as of last week he's homeless and his girlfriend's been in the hospital for 3 weeks and didn't know until yesterday that if she ever leaves the hospital she has no place to live now he put her in a bad spot and she put herself in a bad spot too because speaking of storage units he was paying well almost paying for two large storage units that cost $200 a month each which meant that's $400 a month one of the units has a car and the other one has their belongings and some furniture and stuff like that bulky stuff now he had called me last week to help him to pay for 10 days of rent which turned out to be a little over $400 but because it wasn't paid by a certain day the hotel that they were staying at charge the late fee legal fees and it ended up being 649 and change and I paid that to him so he could stay there until July 3rd because as of noon time the manager was kicking him out the guy didn't care if you had a place to go or not so the moral of my story is don't go above your means when you only make a little bit of amount of money like 788 a month each with you and your girlfriend and expect to pay $408 in front every single week they're already over the amount that they owe so I have no idea how they did pay the storage facility fees because he just got a call yesterday from the storage facility saying oh I'm sorry if you can't come up with the money of 1250.00 in 48 hours everything in the storage units is going to auction and then he had the nerve to call me and ask me for the money and I said I'm sorry I don't have it and now he's allowed to stay at the hospital with his girlfriend and two dogs that they both have better emotional support animals and there's a shower in the hospital room so he gets to take a shower sleep on a chair in air conditioning and he gets her free meals that she really can't eat most of cuz she's not well and the security guard knows the story and said it's okay for him to stay there😮😮😮😮😮😮
Does Taylor Swift tickets come in this list…
