Thanks a lot! While I'm building there always forms something of a backstory in my head, which also helps deciding the color or mood of the base. Next to that I try to contrast or offset the colors of the miniature a bit with those of the base, to make them stand out more.

You are 10 times more proficient at converting than me, but I have one suggestion. It's clear that you used cork on the base on the last one you showed. I would add stuff or remove cork so it no longer reads as cork. A bit of a pet peeve I guess.

Fully agree, and I've come quite a way since then. Cork is a great material but it does show if you use it just as-is...
