Used XM4's 2 years. Gave them to my family, bought XM5's returned them after 2 days because of volume adjustment lagging and auto NC optimizer. Bought another XM4's. Best headphones ever! They just work

Particularly interested in voice quality so have ordered the XM5. I can’t understand why these companies do not include weather resistance. Jabra has done it but there are other drawbacks to their offering.

Even though there where no rumors, it seems it just popped out of no where but even though it's a good headphones so upgrade is way beyond due.
As a Sony fanboy I still own my black Sony WH-1000XM4 I'm really loving the 1000X Series ever since the WH-1000XM3, the black WH-1000XM5 Looks Super Ace, I'll buy one come My Birthday in August.

Everything about the xm5 sounds great, but I really dislike the design. They don’t look bad, it’s just a little too simplistic for my taste.

I had a set of each. I notice you wear glasses also. Without my glasses the 5 was better noise cancelling, with my glasses the 4 was better. I notice almost all these reviews talk nothing about fit.

Them Xm5's are beautiful ive had my pair in the blue for a while and they are amazing super comfortable i can wear them for hours the noise canceling is amazing i do love what they did to the microphones know you can take calls and they sound clear on the other end as for the music it sounds more clear and the bass is not that punchy to destord the audio

I do have daily meetings, but I just talk for one or two minutes. Do the XM4 headphones get the job done for short calls? I really prefer the design of the XM4's over the XM5's.
I have the mx5. Sound is great, NC is great, but it is very loose on your head. When I shake my head, even gently, it falls off. So I think I'm going to exchange it for the mx4 anyway...
So personally I want people opinion, which is better for music wise since I’m thinking of using it for the gym as well.
Neither of them are sweat resistant, you'd be fine if you only lift weights with it on unless if you're the type of person to sweat alot but most definitely not recommended when doing intense cardio.
I have had my xm 4 since they cam eout and I don't see a reson to upgrade to he xm 5 honestly. I'm keeping them until they break

Guys this is important. I’ve had both. New Xm5 is better if for nothing else bc the xm4 headphones break!!!!! Both of mine did within months of buying so for rest of time I had them taped. Xm5 they are secured. Xm4 was good bc they weee flexible / comfortable but so flexible that they easily broke. Still worked but had he taped. Get the new ones. I still can sleep in xm5 (yes I sleep in then bc hate noise ) but won’t have to tape them up
The xm5 sounds better with your voice. For me i need to block out fans, noise from the bus. Music is a major coping tool. I love bass heavy music. I have the xm3 and am wondering if upgrading is worth it. Voice quality is not important.
Do xm5s have a physical bass like xm4s? Or is it audible bass we get in mid range headphones because they have smaller 30mm drivers compared to xm4s.

If you want neutral go bose. I was lucky enough to buy both a few years ago of the xm3 xm4 and bose qc35ii and bose 700. Neutral crisp clarity ie as close as you can get to reference sound quality in amc headphones. Sadly bose is better. I love my sonys for certain things, but as he shows with the xm4 series. the xm means xtremly muddled audio quality for calls. They added more mics and its still under par
In my country they are currently at the exact same cost, due to big discount on XM5s (haven't seen a discount on XM4s at all). They are both at $400.00 cost though, so...
Which is Louder xm4, xm5 or are same?
The XM4 has not a strong bass sound and the XM5 is even worse, what tests say, i believe possibly because it has only a 30mm driver instead of a 40mm driver. All the good bass headphones I know have 40mm driver. Like the Panasonic RB-M700B with Bass Reactor or the older Sony MDR-XB950N1 Extrabass. You can't get close to them with the M4 even with highest Bass Equilizer... With the bass headphones you think you have a fat subwoofer in the headphones. The sound of the XM4 is like you do not have a subwoofer...
Agreed also I know ppl hate cuz they’re not cool anymore, but Beats have amazing bass.

My XM4 doesn't sound like that though your mic in your XM4 might be broken, I use 1000X since XM3 and I use them in calls
As someone who loves to sing while listening to my music, I’d love to know if the XM5 allow you to do this without them stopping & thinking you’re giving a command. I had terrible issues with this on the XM4s. Even with the “Speak to Chat” button turned off, it would turn on the minute I started singing. I guess it didn’t occur to Sony that lots of people like to sing along with their music. Could you let me know if the XM5s have the same issue? Thank you so much!
you can change a setting in the app so that it doesn't do that

Great video! I was wondering, how do the xm5s compare to the xm4s bass wise? I heard that they are a little bit sharper and less pronounced but what about when you up the boost in the eq? Is it a similar type of bass?
xm3 and xm4 are a lot warmer sounding. if you want the bass i dont care what it says on paper the older models just seem better?
I didnt understood this sound comparising because I used Custom EQ on both XM5 and 4 and they sounded exactly the same

I have the xm4 and mainly use for traveling and it’s one of the best for noise cancelling in the air. Battery life is one of the best feature for this product. IF the other minor features mentioned here, microphone for calls matters to you then I guess.

so - if I am daily music listener - listen to the music for 3+-5 hours daily and I need to have a wide range of frequencies ( need to have a good BASS ans a TREBLE) is it worth it to pay more for a new model or not? I will not use any microphone... calls are not important for me... will just listen to the music and need to have a HQ.. is it worth to pay more?????
I have Sony WH-XB900N extra bass and they’re a tier below the XM4’s and I had them since 2019 and wear them every day but they’re finally starting to wear out as far as the ear cups, head band cushion and also the structure of the headphones. They no longer hold in place when adjusting the size and the even just fall off completely and I’ve noticed since they’re made of plastic the plastic is also cracking and which is why they don’t hold in place anymore. I can easily fix them with tape to hold in place and just replace the ear cups but I’m debating on getting the XM4’s or the XM5’s cause I’m looking for a new pair of headphones and just don’t know which one to get because I’m really prioritizing the price and sound quality maybe even build quality
I have the same exact headphones, but the right ear is now kinda loose contact with the audio wire inside since a very slight head tilt would cause its sound to dissapear on and off.
Just 5 days ago I finally got the xm4s due to these reasons
1. more compact than xm5
2. has NFC, I use it alot
3. in tests, it shows it has better sound quality than xm5 but the xm5 has more soundstage
4. the ANC of the xm5 is sometimes overly intelligent (as per xm5 users)
5. mic quality is still ok for use, not too behind from xm5
6. price, its cheaper
7. it has dual connectivity that the xb900n doesnt have (one of the main reason why i want to upgrade a tier higher)
8. stocks/supply is getting low since its not the latest model.

I have WH-XB900N and now XM5. I can tell you that in terms of Base XB900 is better. XM5 is better in every other department. I really like fast charging and comfort. XB900 is too heavy to wear for long.

I bought the Mk4 last year with 3 year warranty, I went to go replace them due to a high pitch sound on the left muff. They gave me the Mk5 instead and I really dislike the design and hate how the earmuffs can't flip towards your chest. When I switch from Noise canceling to Ambient.. it doesn't make the sound it used to make its just silent and switches. nothing big but personal preference.
If you want to use the headphones for calls, XM5's are a good upgrade

Thanks for commenting on Dolby Atmos performance. I expected improvements there based on the smaller driver.
Since everyone’s ears are shaped differently, and Apple Music doesn’t have a distinction between over ear and in ear headphones for Atmos, in ear headphones like the WF-1000XM4 outperform the WH-1000XM4 for Atmos. Hopefully the WH-1000XM5 can narrow that gap, if not close it. Looking forward to getting mine!

There is no way they charge that fast without the battery overheating.
EDIT: 1 minute charge will give you 1 hour of play (not 3.3 hours). I just confirmed it on Sony's homepage.
You do know phones can Charge from 0-100 in 15 minutes, it's believable
Yeah I don't believe 3 mins of charge give that.. I've charged mine for 25 mins and got up to 70 percent from 20%
Auto nc still a problem with XM5 ?
I'm looking to buy one of these but in the UK, the XM4 is £85 cheaper. What would you choose? I do a lot of train travel and will use for zoom calls! The price difference is quite bit so I'm stuck
Personally, i would go for the xm5s for the microphone quality. The case isn’t even that much bigger and it’s pretty skinny. The noise cancellation as well is better for trains.

What really gets me is my $40 Soundcore in-ear buds have a better, deeper, richer sound than my Sony WH-XM4 over-ear headphones. Like, I'm not even a bad head, but these buds are freaking awesome! I can actually feel the bass!
Your comparing an in ear earphone vs over the ear. Two diferent techs mate. its like comparing these in boise cancellation vs a free pair of airline foam earplugs.
The free earplugs win in every scenario, also if your really after audio quality you dont buy Bluetooth nor active noise cancelling headphones. Its like listening to mozart play live with a guy reving a jet Turbine beside him... the introduced noise floor ruins sound quality.

I just bought the XM4 on Amazon for 228 + tax = 251, I think it’s a good price for what you get.
Look they are still fantastic headphones, but the call quality is absolute shite. Wait untill your need to talk with them and the other person is like what? i cant hear you? you sound really far away? am i on speaker? etc.
But there is hope, wear them backwards ie l on right right on left and the stupid rear facing mic holes are ever so slightly closer to your mouth and slightly improve the call quality. slightly.
Can you connect the xm4 to pc via cable?

Thanks for a great video. I could immediately hear the difference in voice quality between the xm5 verses the xm4 headphones. I had a set of the xm4 headphones, and I didn't like how plastic feeling they were. I felt that with the folding hinges of the ear cups, they could easily break. I returned them. I'll have to get a pair of these new xm5 headphones. Although, I already have the bose NC700S and the apple airpods max.

Look il put it bluntly. everyone likes to be the one with newer better, i did it too. But unless you are literally sitting there deliberatly trying to notice the diference with zero music on, theres no noticable real world diference. Ive tried them on two flights xm4 vs xm5 im going on a 14 hour flight in a few weeks and will try them both one each way and see but if you have ANY music on , theres no way to tell a noticable diference. and lets be honest if you really wanna block the noise, you can always wear free foam earplugs and they block 10x more noise for free. last 14 hour flight back in 2019 i actually wore foam earplugs with my sony xm3s over the top and it was a beautiful comfortable experience that was on a 747 in a noisy seat. dreamliner the other way i just wore the xm3s and was happy. The xm4 are a good compromise without forking over so much for barely any noticable diference. Especially with the xm4 getting cheaper everyday. And like i said elsewhere if you flip the xm4 around backwards ie left on right right on left. the sound quality improves ever so slightly for calls.
But what i say and everyone else be dammed, go try them one by yourself without taking your money or wallet and walk away after trying both. Go back again another day and try again, i tried doing that amd ended up with the xm3s and the bose qc35ii and the bose 700s and xm4 and recently and only because i can use them for work ie tax deductable the xm5 . all good headsets.
