Cold Bass on Prettyboy Reservoir

- Kevin Hollasch hosts me on Prettyboy Reservoir in Maryland following an historically cold blast of arctic air, that featured hurricane force winds and wind chills in the negative teens. Fortunately, this was early winter, and the reservoir had not cooled off so much that we could not launch because of ice formation. Blade baits and heavy hair jig caught both largemouth and smallmouth.

I like the playing around with different cadences, retrieves and focusing on the sensation of lowering it down, waiting for the crunch.
Great video and tips on the blade bait techniques. Just a suggestion with the cold temps and water, wear an inflataable life jax. Never know when you could fall into 38 degree water.
Good call. I had my dry suit on underneath the jacket.

Nice video Jeff! It's been about 14 years since i fished Prettyboy from shore. A beautiful lake, full of big smallmouth and largemouth. The blade bait technique is good at this time of year , you can catch some huge smallmouth on the Potomac as well as largemouth fishing bladebaits in Penrod's Cove on the Potomac- it's the huge cove on the Maryland side before you go under the Wilson Bridge. Also known as the Spoils. Be safe out there, the water this time of year is in the high 30's where it hasn't iced over already and if you fall in, it takes less than 5 minutes for hypothermia to get you. Be safe and have a great '23!
Mike, no doubt that hypothermia kills anglers every year. That’s why I wear a dry suit. I had it on under that big gray jacket in this video. It gives anyone a great chance to get back in the boat before the muscles shut down.
Prettyboy has some great fish, but it’s not typically a numbers place. Loch Raven Reservoir is much better for that because of the grass. Liberty and Prettyboy fluctuate water levels to meet Baltimore’s municipal water needs. Loch Raven (downstream of Prettyboy on the Gunpowder River watershed) stays the same level. That allows the grass to establish and not die off when the reservoir levels drop, leaving the grass high and dry to die. Grass is so critical to a bass fishery. Liberty and Prettyboy have grass, and those areas are fish magnets, but it’s nowhere near as ubiquitous as it is on Loch Raven.
Jeff love all you do for us. Any idea if drew is doing any more podcasts or TH-cam’s ? Seems like the other 3 kayak tournaments turning more into a bass boats tournaments and the way drew and you kayak fishing by pulling and getting into spots boats can’t is going by the wayside sadly. Maybe drew can start up river bassin again. Happy new year
There’s a lot loaded in there! Drew will keep doing Drew stuff. River Bassin was special. Tournaments need numbers to survive and prosper. Numbers drop when a large number of people believe that they can’t compete with a small number of people who do special things like access difficult to access water. They lose heart. So the playing field is leveled to boost the hope of the masses that they might some day win.

I was there in August and I couldn't catch a cold there at Pretty Boy.
Summer can be tough, but the same deep jig fishing structure that we do in winter applies.
