There exists more than one name for many countries and languages. Check back here to this post (which I will be editing, so give it a like! 😊) in a few days for a more complete list of nationalities and language names. In the meantime, consult the dictionaries I discuss here: th-cam.com/video/ZHBknn3rIuo/w-d-xo.html

Living languages (at least the ones recognized as official languages) adopt names for countries in a more or less arbitrary manner (why don't Italians call Germany Allemagna, or Greeks still call France Γαλλία?), but they end up standardizing that name, either via some centralized authority or by the frequent usage of the term. This is a problem with modern Latin, a lot of names don't appear to have a de facto standard, so it feels like anything goes.

    • @livedandletdie

@@erickr404 This is why I dislike the use of Svetica, because the region has historically been known in Latin as Scandza or Scandinavia, or even Scania, I mean even using a direct translation of the region as Periculo Insularia would be a better name. I mean Gaius Plinius Secundus used Scandinavia. And let's be frank, Sweden isn't a nation, it's a hellhole, every citizen of Sweden, speaks their own languages, yet we're all forced to call ourselves Swedish because no one knows what Dale or Scane or Bonn(not the German city) is, and as such we're all forced to live in this hellhole of oppression. I mean a city 100km away from me, is literally called Dangerous sandbank in old North Germanic. Skanör, and below that city lies Falsterbo, a town with reefs and an extremely shallow ocean.

I would encourage you to study Latin (and Greek if possible) in college! I did that and had no problem getting a job teaching. But a degree in Classics is also a great foundation for other areas of study. After teaching Latin and Greek for some years I got an MA in Applied Linguistics, which allowed me to get a teaching job in Alexandria, Egypt.

Latin is a dead language technically, but it is very much required to learn or at least comprehend for any history enthusiast or Scholar. It's importance in linguistics and anthropology is equally as high. To make it short, if you want to have a career in humanistic studies, you'll probably need to learn Latin sooner or later.

This style of teaching is so valuable. A non Latin speaker can watch this and because it is spoken in such an intuitive way, begin to piece things together while they listen. Though I have no ability to speak Latin, I found I was able to follow along and understand what was being said. You really feel yourself learning here, you begin by attempting to translate in your head, but by the end of the video you have some degree of inherent understanding of what is being said, though you may not consciously comprehend it. It is very reminiscent of the way that children pick up on languages when they are young and I think it's such an underrated form of learning. It's so refreshing to see language learning made this intuitive, and I thank you and pray you continue to make more videos like this!

Thank you, Luke! This video made me start refreshing my Latin after almost 35 years. What a great motivational video! I am working with more than ten languages, but Luke, you are exceptional! I made it to your Hans Olberg hommage "Lingua Latina per se illustra pars 13" so far, just from the flow of this above video. Yes, it has lengths, and I love it like that. There are so many people in there and each one is unique. Apart from that I watched at least two hours of yours because your work is just so amazing. I didn't know there is something like that, at all. There are some other masters, you point to them in some of your videos, and again: Thank you! I had Latin for seven years in school and it was terrible. It was exactly the opposite of your work. My initial re-interest in Latin comes from reading Dante's Inferno, it is half the way there, so to speak. But this Latin experience was not expected, it just captivated me! Also like your Greek bits, will get back to that if life span allows. Many many friendly regards from Germania. What an outstanding and memorable motivational video! And yet so new!

In Italy we have a good chunk of high schools teaching Latin, although not at a fluency level (think old scholar monk painfully translating obscure writings consulting a dictionary). If you are cool with such a method of studying you can look up "Latin grammar" on Google and one of the top results is a book by Bennett which looks fairly similar to the texts we used at school. If you get through that and translate some classics with a dictionary (also available online) you have basically the entire "classical studies" high school Latin course as I had it.
Granted, do not expect to be amazing like Scorpio at the end of the endeavour, but I am still (7+ years after translating anything from Latin) able to understand fairly well all his videos. I do not expect most Latin courses to take you further than that anyway unless the rest of the world does things very differently from Italy (university Latin courses are more of the same with a lot of literature, but still no speaking).

    • @ScorpioMartianus
      @ScorpioMartianus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Rookie64v unfortunately, the Classics education in Italy is shockingly poor. The methods used there are mostly stuck in the mid-20th century. While the grammar-translation method still persists outside of Italy, it has been replaced by Comprehensible Input methods in many schools, and other such direct methods will be the norm nearly everywhere sooner than later. In Italy GrecoLatinoVivo and Vivarium Novum are famous for being pioneers of CI in Italy.

Salvete! Mihi nomen est Joshua. Ego sum Batavice sed me habito in Asia. Nunc studeo multae lingae.
I hope you understand what I meant to say. I originally come from The Netherlands but I'm teaching English in Indonesia. At the moment I'm trying to learn many languages, in alphabetical order: Castellano, Catalan, French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Latin and Mandarin.
I started following you after the collaboration video where you tried to find out how well speakers of Latin languages understand actual Latin. I was very surprised how well I did and immediately subscribed to your channel.
I want to incorporate a Latin motto in a family crest design that I'm working on but I haven't been able to find what I need, so I decided to learn the language for myself and then I just got hooked.
The most trouble I'm having is getting the endings right, the grammar seems pretty complicated but I'm amazed to see that I was able to follow the content of this video without any problem.
Thanks for the amazing videos you make and the motivation I get from them!
In case you were wondering the motto for the family crest is "Never forget where you come from".
So far I have "Numquam obliviscar ex qua venisti" but based on what I recently learnt I think it might be better to say "Numquam obliviscar ubi venis" but I'm not sure...
To all of you here, it's so wonderful to see that this beautiful language is still very much alive and spoken and loved across the globe. Very nice to meet you all!

I highly recommend you speak about Latin influence for example in English. I guess you love Latin because English, your maternal language, has several words that originally come from Latin such as some plurals like cactii, data, criteria, and this fenomena doesn't work same way in (ironically) romanic tongues like my Spanish (except in Italian, I guess). Honestly I love humanities, I love hard Greek and Latin, and never think Latin is a dead tongue, it's alive in almost all languages!! It's great what you're doing!!
