Jod reminds me a lot of a main villain I had in one of my novels seven years ago. He is a bad guy, yes, but he is not outright evil. He does what he needs to do to achieve his goal - he is cold, calculating and at times ruthless. But he doesn't do more than necessary. He takes no pleasure in hurting anyone, especially not the kids, and whenever he goes up against them - like when he challenges Fern in Episode 5 - it is clear that he doesn't really want to. so when Fern finally yields to him, he is relieved and lets her go immediately. When KB crashes with the ship, he is upset about her getting hurt, saying that it should never have come to this. The moment when he captures the lot and yells at them is heartbraking - but he knows that he has to intimidate them into submission, otherwise much worse things would happen to them. Hadn't they escaped at the end of Episode 5, he probably would have been much softer on them and even would have kept his end of their bargain. I think this kind of villain is absolutely fascinating. The one I wrote was a soldier of fortune - breaking laws and doing anything to achieve his goals, but only because he has to. He uses his talents, especially his intelligence and personality, to his advantage. But he is not cruel or sadistic. His adversary - and the hero of my book - is a thirteen year old girl who takes an apprenticeship at a mercenary academy to escape from her boring life (similar to Wim on At Attin). Their confrontations are twofold - one when he takes her prisoner and interrogates her, but afterwards tells her that she will be safe and treated right if she behaves herself. The second is at the end when she finally makes him surrender to her. Both confrontations are verbal ones (though she does have a weapon), and when he finally gives in to her, he even shows compassion for her and is impressed of her abilities.
What excites me about recent Star Wars is that they seem to be shaking up the genres. The point about "tapping into our relationship with Star Wars" was perfect and spot on. That's what this show got very right, and it patched over the series few flaws. The sense of adventure was greater than the sense of nostalgia.
There's something interesting about Wim. Typically in each group you have archetypes that characters fit into. So you have Fern the leader, KB the smart one, Neel the loveable goodhearted goofball. What's left? The hero, the main character. But Wim is anything but a hero. He constantly fails and makes things worse. It's such an interesting twist on the main character hero archetype.
We still gotta realize he's a kid too. He's supposed to fail because he's a kid dealing adult problems. It was so great watching him even mess up activating the light saber, because how would he really know how to? He will grow into the hero he wants to be, and that's the magic of this story.

Very good and thorough analysis. I agree with you on almost every account. I think the big problem with Fern in the final act is that they decided to go full on eighties with her and turn her into the "damsel in distress" trope, with Wim being the one that wants to save her and goes up face to face against the villain to do so. The fact that Fern is talking to her mom about the good people she met in the galaxy does soften this a bit, so I do think it was good that Fern had the scene, not Wim. Maybe in the second season they learn from the first one and put a much stronger focus on Neel. Giving him much more backstory and character. Everybody seems to love him - at least among the comments I've read and seen he is almost as popular as Grogu.
@fiktivhistoriker345 Yes, thos is one of the ways I imagine it could go: Neel is not getting over the adventure they had, and he remembers thos girl and wants to help her. So he sneaks on board a New Republic starship - those are landing frequently now - and tries to get back at AtAchrann, maybe even trying to make peace between the warring factions. The rest of the gang will try to get him back.
@@TheTrollingMaster-xr9elIt does make sense, yes, but it also basically takes all opportunity away from Fern to act as part of the team, hence her character arc falls flat.
I really do hope Skeleton Crew pulls an Andor and grows more of an audience through word of mouth. Yeah it has some slight problems, but what movie/show doesn't. This show I feel really did capture what it was like growing up and being a fan of Star Wars, and I feel like this showcases what Disney Star Wars does best(at least with the movies and shows), which are these smaller scale, character driven stories that don't rely on galaxy ending threats or heavily tie into the pre-existing narrative or legacy characters. And quite honestly at a time when a lot of people seem apathetic and cynical about Star Wars, its important to remember that there is still good in it. If this show gets a S2, I hope its allowed to just exist off to the side of the Mandoverse, with only occasional references to what goes on in the greater Star Wars story. Or perhaps we get to see these kids grow up, and really start to deal with a lot of the effects of what goes on in the galaxy, and navigate the changes and challenges that come from it. Like Andor, it can really show us more what life in the galaxy was really like in between Episode 6-7. Or if not, even just a comic series showing their adventures. IMO, the comics and books are one of the few parts of Disney Star Wars that's usually consistently good. I'm not the biggest sequel guy, but Shadow of the Sith and the Rise of Kylo Ren comic do A LOT of heavy lifting for giving much needed context for that trilogy, and you can bet I'm curious about the Legacy of Vader comic showing what Kylo Ren was actually like as Supreme Leader. Either way, here's hoping Andor S2 sticks the landing because man Star Wars needs a good streak right now, and I'm hoping Disney and Lucasfilm are learning all the lessons they need to before Ahsoka S2 and the films down the pipeline.
00:52 At first glance the suburbs didnt feel like Star Wars because it was just American suburbs in space, and star wars always mixes an additional element. Like Tatooine is like the Arrakis mixed with the Old West in space. But in the show they give the additional element of being an old treasure planet from the old republic, so it was all good.
it really helps that they established that when compared to the rest of the galaxy this one particular planet would be considered bizarre and had to be deliberately set up
I think you misunderstood Fern's arc. Yes she was clearly groomed as a leader, likely the root of her rebellious facade, and you identify all her struggles along the way and came so close to the lesson she had to learn. In the end, her lesson was not just to recognise others strengths and weakness, but to learn to trust those she leads and to inspire them and give hope. This is why the line you would have preferred Wim to have was the perfect line for Fern and showed she had grown into a true leader. She dropped her defenses of needing to be the one in control of everything and put her trust in those around her to do their job and stepped up as a leader. She did this by giving hope to the person that mattered most, her mother. Not because it was her mother, but because she represented the citizens of At Attin both actually as a leadership figure and metaphorically as the lost hope of all the citizens. This was the moment she became a true leader. This was Ferns arc. I also loved that despite everything, Wim still reached out to Jod at the end, saying without words "you can come with us, you don't have to be the villian".
I just wanted to say that I love your videos and analysis on star wars movies and shows it allows me see the depths that story telling can go. Your points also allow me to realize a new perspective or other way of seeing something that I otherwise would not have seen. I am a huge star wars fans I have been into the franchise since I was a kid.
Excuuuuuuuuuse me but Mandolorian wasn't a miss! The 3rd season suffered Kennedy issues but it was overall incredibly well received. Ahsoka was mid, Kenobi was embarassingly weak. But I heavily agree, Skeleton Crew is fantastic. My only criticism is that the episodes were too short and like you, I wanted a kind of 'prologue'. I pray that Disney realise their low viewership is due to so many people having given up on the franchise. Give us a season 2!
@@thegoldman25 The problem with Mando 3 isnt that it was a bad show its that Favreau and Filoni had a good grasp on the first two seasons, with Favrea gone Dave was left meandering and he fell back on what he knows best, finishing off Clone wars. Thats great, clone wars fans love it, me included. But its totally adrift from series 1 and 2 plotting, Mando fans wanted Din to become Mandalore and live out the boys action movie fantasy, he got a magic sword, he becomes king. The two sets of expectations didnt match up. Kenobi was just odd. again, theres legions of old fans who wanted a Luke story so they were disappointed from the start and werent shy about saying it. But if you accept a Leia story it still odd. Theres moments that are amazingly high quality, Vader attacking the village for example. But its let down by weak characters and bad plotting as if they had the movie high points, the in some basic bridge plotting to fill in the spaces and then forgot about character development. Or cannon. Or the movies.
All Mando seasons were good, not at least because of Grogu❤. And it had a big fight at the end. I guess even if some fans are upset because of Bo Katan or whatever, general audiences liked it. Ahsoka seemed to be only a setup for season 2, and i still don't know if i should be interested in it. In Kenobi the fight between him and Vader was totally unneccessary. That's more like destroying the OT than other shows did. And in some scenes he seemed to act totally clueless. The Empire and the inquisitors were also unneccessary. Let Leia be abducted by criminals or separatists, and let her parents call for Kenobi instead of the authorities to avoid uncovering of Leias secret. Or just letting him save Luke from hazardous situations without him recognizing. Might have worked as a comedy. And in the end of each episode QuiGon shows up and says "Tell me, what went wrong this time?"
Skeleton Crew was such a refreshing show for Disney+ Star Wars! A non-Skywalker related story that encompasses a ton of Star Wars' themes and has a great, simple storyline featuring adventure and space pirates. As well as having an amazing actor in Jude Law play a new great character in Jod. I think it's unlikely will get a S2, but I would love it if we got another season!
It was fun and light hearted...This is what Disney was supposed to do with Star Wars. But it was a bit shallow, if you edited this into a 4 1/2 hour movie, it would be considered a bad film due to having little character development for the kids. Like KB's entire character development comes down to a single scene where her augs are failing and she gets in the fight with Fern. The editing was too rushed and the runtimes were too short to have much room for any of this. If the episodes were 45 minutes instead of 35 minutes, it could have been much better. I guess it was intended for children with limited attention spans.

Hey, I don't know if you will respond but I have been inspired by your past videos and want to make a video on Skeleton Crew just to voice my opinions, how do you get footage from the show to use/also avoiding a copyright strike?
I’ll respond! I use a capture card and record Disney+ on my Xbox. If you would like specifics, email me. My email is towards the bottom of the description
Thanks for this, while I agree with most of what you said. I was most grateful that Fern "failed" to become a Boss Girl == she tried it and failed - why -- because without skills, experience, drive and willingness to sacrifice all etc.. you simply cannot do it. AND this is the reason that shows/movies with Boss Girl tropes are simply ludicrous. Yes that includes the Ray movies and definately so many others outwith of former Comic books and Si-Fi/Fantasy. I was very happy that the series ended with so many open ends. These open ends provide a great place to launch Season 2 from. My hope for Season 2 is that the team develops a great 2nd arc -- just seeing how AA transitions into the New Republic is not enough for me -- it would be grand to see some kind off tie in to the funding of the First Order or Emperor Palp. As you note since the supervisor knew about Order 66 the Supervisor must have been connected to the "dark" in some way.
My current ranking of live action seasons Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2: 9/10 Andor: 8.5/10 Skeleton Crew: 8/10 Ahsoka: 7/10 Obi-Wan: 5.5/10 Mandalorian season 3: 3/10 Book of Boba Fett: 2/10 Acolyte: 1/10 Animation Clone Wars: 9.5/10 Rebels: 9/10 Bad Batch: 7.5/10 Tales of the Jedi: 7/10 Tales of the Empire: 5/10 Resistance: 3/10

What do you think about this entire filoni hate bandwagon that currently happening with the fandom? It literally just seems like people are using him as a scapegoat to dump all their problems on, additionally most of them seemingly have never seen the animated stuff and have only watched TH-cam videos shitting on them, for example i saw a guy say all the animated suff was terrible except a few episodes of the clone wars filoni apparently had nothing to do with. The family configuration is curious because Wim has a single father (due to a tragedy), Fern has a single mother, KB has two mothers, and Neel (the one with the elephant face) has a traditional family, but the father is the only one who does not have an active participation, as he only appears for 1 second in the hologram, and 2 seconds in the last episode, while Neel's mother and the other children's parents participate a lot in the story. The character KB embodies the entire leftist agenda: she has two lesbian mothers, and a relationship between her and Fern is hinted at in the sixth episode; she is scientifically enhanced, which is what they want to do in the future with genetic manipulation; she is visually different. For these reasons she is the most intelligent of the group. And did you notice that the girls are taller, older and more experienced than the boys? The protagonist Wim soon loses the spotlight to Fern, who soon becomes the captain of the crew, and he spends the whole time talking about how amazing Fern is. And this is the second time (the first was The Acolyte) that they show the Jedi figure as something dangerous and harmful to children. I know that he was only slightly trained by a Jedi who died, but the power of the image and how Jod was shown symbolizes this. And when Anakin killed the children he was no longer a Jedi.
I didn’t like it. KB needed to die at the end, but nobody dies in Star Wars nowadays. Besides, the two moms thing made me think all the time of Disney Inclusion office filling out a checklist for their children targeting agenda.
Goldman, please watch out!!! One can’t go around praising Disney Stars Wars without getting canceled or accused of being a “woke” communist Marxist sheep 🙄🤦
What was great about Skeleton Crew? Nothing. The only good thing that can be said about it, that it was not a bad as anything else disney did with this franchise, except for Rogue One, and Andor season 1. Also, this was not a good show at all. Unless you are 10 years old. Then it's fine. Still, it's message is very wrong. It sets a bad example for the kids, who are the target age group. It propagates that it's fine to be a disobedient whiney, stupid, incompetent, and useless kid, because you can be a hero being like that, who's heroism is that he disobeys every grown up, and a shitty liar. But first thing first. How is this Star Wars? Talking about Jedi, and have lightsaber and X-wing in it makes it Star Wars somehow? Despite that all the places the show visits nothing reminds the audience of the galaxy far-far away. Instead we saw a future small town in Montana, a space station and the Moon with the Owl thing. How is this suppose to be Star Wars, not to mention great? Yes, the locations can vary a lot, but one thing they can not do, to be Star Wars. Reminding us to Earth. This show miserably failed at that. This show created absolutely no nostalgia. The story is just stupid, and is full with of all sorts of clichés. It can can get away with it because it's for 10 year olds, and it's new to them and they don't think about anything, but beyond that it's a complete nonsense. Seriously, what fool would do something for 20 years without any connection to the outside world, while they are working for the outside world. And there are a lot of people doing this on a planetary level! Why the hell are they making money if no one ever comes to take it? Judgment: This show was bad.
I love how people can't fathom anyone ever disagreeing with them so they write a novel like this trying to justify their opinion and why everyone else is just a bunch of Stoopid doo doo heads
@@ledinyourwalls I know that it might be a challenging concept to comprehend for some, that if someone disagrees, that does not mean they are unable to fathom that others have a different opinion. And there are these people who think a 30 second read is more than a 30 minute video, if they disagree with it. That sums up their level of inteligence. Furthermore, these people resort to irrelevant personal attacks when they don't have a coherent, fact based argument, as their opinion is mostly or entirely based on emotion. Naturally they are wrong, but they are too blind to see it. Also they think that who disagrees with them are the ones who are "stoopid", and not them. It's unfortunate.
Neel was my favorite character!
Neel still has to visit this girl on AtAchran and help her people.
@fiktivhistoriker345 Yes, thos is one of the ways I imagine it could go:
Neel is not getting over the adventure they had, and he remembers thos girl and wants to help her. So he sneaks on board a New Republic starship - those are landing frequently now - and tries to get back at AtAchrann, maybe even trying to make peace between the warring factions. The rest of the gang will try to get him back.
I disagree it makes sense for Jod to take a hostage and the leader to demoralize the others.
@@TheTrollingMaster-xr9elIt does make sense, yes, but it also basically takes all opportunity away from Fern to act as part of the team, hence her character arc falls flat.
10:54 Wim looking at the X-wings gave me chills

I really want a second season!!!
I desperately want a season 2
@@thegoldman25 there's so much you can do with Jod alone as the focus! A force sensitive pirate is such a cool concept
The depth and overall show is ideal for 8-10 years old.
00:52 At first glance the suburbs didnt feel like Star Wars because it was just American suburbs in space, and star wars always mixes an additional element. Like Tatooine is like the Arrakis mixed with the Old West in space. But in the show they give the additional element of being an old treasure planet from the old republic, so it was all good.
good point
it really helps that they established that when compared to the rest of the galaxy this one particular planet would be considered bizarre and had to be deliberately set up
I think you misunderstood Fern's arc.
Ahsoka was pretty good and Obi Wan was decent. Boba Fett was pretty mid.
I wish I liked season 3 as much as you do
@@thegoldman25 The problem with Mando 3 isnt that it was a bad show its that Favreau and Filoni had a good grasp on the first two seasons, with Favrea gone Dave was left meandering and he fell back on what he knows best, finishing off Clone wars.
@@thegoldman25I enjoyed season 3. But it was nowhere near as good as the first two.
Jod is such an interesting character.
In ep 7 Jods speech to the kids indicated that he envied them for growing up in a safe environment.
great point
Skeleton Crew was such a refreshing show for Disney+ Star Wars! A non-Skywalker related story that encompasses a ton of Star Wars' themes and has a great, simple storyline featuring adventure and space pirates. As well as having an amazing actor in Jude Law play a new great character in Jod. I think it's unlikely will get a S2, but I would love it if we got another season!
That's a great word, refreshing. That's how i feel too
Loved every part of Skeleton Crew, and I love your videos. Subbed!
Thanks for the sub, it means a lot!
Yes,, yes, and yes! The full season was an incredible and relatable story, and each episode contributed to te pelot. Great video.
Fantastic video on the Skeleton Crew. Its easily my personal favorite Star Wars live action content to come out since the Disney era.
It's a great show!
The Goonies in Space!
This is a great video for a great fun series.
It really is!
Star Wars shows and movies succeed when they pick a subgenre and stick to it. Mandalorian is a western, andor is an espionage thriller, and Skeleton Crew is a coming of age adventure story. Pick a good formula and execute it well and you end up with a good show.
That's where the Acolyte failed. It was pitched as a Jedi murder mystery, but Leslye Headland insted tried to make a sampler platter of a bunch of different genres and ended up with a mess. I still believe if she had stuck to the original premise it would have made for an interesting show
Heck, this applies to a lot of MCU stuff as well. Winter Soldier was a spy movie, Ant Man was a heist movie, The Guardians of the Galaxy movies are all roadtrip movies, and Spiderman: Homecoming is a high school comedy.
Wim definitely doesn't feel like he was made up on a whim!
Ha!
I also really liked the series! It’s disappointing that the best D+ Star Wars shows like Andor and this are criminally underwatched.
No SM-33 take? Everyone could use a pirate droid.
33 was awesome!!
he was cool, nothing more to say
Another good video !
Thanks for watching!

He hated ahsoka and kept calling her "filonis pet character" he didn't know anything about rebels even only complaining about the silly space whales. Despided tales because he thought the baby ahsoka stuff was werid Like holy shit how do you manage to hate a guy this much? They always have to either say everything is bad or cope by pretending he had nothing to do with it
Dave deserves some criticism, but i think most of it is just the common wave these days of hating on Star Wars
@@thegoldman25yep. Some of it is salty eu fans that'll shit on filoni all day but never dare hold Dave to the same hate because he created sw and he's the messiah!!!!. Others are just the people that copy their opinions from TH-camrs (specifically the guy that crashed out at Anthony Daniels and preceded to make 20 "analyzing evil" videos on him) because who needs to think when TH-camrs can think for you right?
I really liked it. But I just wonder what the name Skeleton Crew means. Have you ever asked yourself this?🤔

Did u seriously put the Mandalorian down as a miss?? You know you are in the tiny minority who think that right? Obviously you aren't a real fan.
He’s referring specifically to season 3 I’m fairly certain
@ oh ok, that wasn’t clear, although I personally thought it was good.
Just season 3
Jod clearly has no interest in being a jedi
10 seconds in and i wonder: Mandalorian a miss? Even season 3 was better than Ahsoka.
Just Mando 3, not the whole show
Mandalorian a miss??? What?
S3 only
only S3
I didn’t like it. KB needed to die at the end, but nobody dies in Star Wars nowadays. Besides, the two moms thing made me think all the time of Disney Inclusion office filling out a checklist for their children targeting agenda.
Goldman, please watch out!!! One can’t go around praising Disney Stars Wars without getting canceled or accused of being a “woke” communist Marxist sheep 🙄🤦
Good Job
Thanks!
I love how people can't fathom anyone ever disagreeing with them so they write a novel like this trying to justify their opinion and why everyone else is just a bunch of Stoopid doo doo heads
sorry you didn't like it
@@ledinyourwalls
I know that it might be a challenging concept to comprehend for some, that if someone disagrees, that does not mean they are unable to fathom that others have a different opinion.
Still, I wish you the best, and may god have mercy on your soul.

Hopefully this read is not too long for you.
