    • @TheonetheycallQuaid
      @TheonetheycallQuaid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DMR4736 I wouldn’t necessarily call you watching Lee Trevino’s swing a mistake. He was one of the greatest ball strikers this side of Ben Hogan. If you watch closely, Fred & Lee have similar characteristics in their swing, they both “chase” the ball down the line and stay down and through longer than most.

  • @MacNmey

    I have always had trouble with getting too fast with my upper body and hands. It really helps me to do the "pause" at top of swing allowing my lower body to initiate the completion of the swing after the pause. This method is the only I have found to get better tempo and eliminate "throwing" the club.

    I know this is three years later but there just isn’t a more beautiful swing than Fred Couples’. I find it interesting that he said Tom Weiskopf’s was his favourite swing, as it was always mine, when I was playing off 8 handicap at age 15 (I’m the same age as Freddie). I always tried to copy Tom Weiskpf’s swing when young but as I got older that would hurt my back. Now i have much more of a Freddie swing and it suits me fine. No back injuries! I’m not playing off single figure handicap anymore but that’s down to a career getting in the way and keeping me away from golf for 38 years! Freddie is loved by everyone because he is a genuine nice guy, a gentleman and still a great golfer. I love watching him. Thank you for posting. Very interesting video.

    The two most underrated Fred Couples facts that I didn't know: huge calves, and the man doesn't hold a grudge. To say he admired Tom Weiskopf, wow. Weiskopf totally insulted Couples on Golf Digest back in the 90s, and later apologized for this. Obviously, apology accepted, with no hard feelings. With Couples, the Legend just continuous.

No fire in him to win or reach for more etc...without ever even talking to Fred Couples about anything to do with his golf or his life period. I am only 5'4" and I have a very steep backswing like Fred. People are always telling me to shallow it out. But I generate a lot of swing speed through the ball, and I get a high launch angle into the greens. But like Fred I was also blessed with wide shoulders, and a narrow hips. This might not seem like a big deal....but it helps generate power, and I consistently out drive my 6 foot tall buddies who think I just muscle it.

I would describe his swing as a mixture of old and new school… obviously Fred is very supple. He has long played the supposed 'new' flat footed backswing, but he uses a combination of that with a very 'wristy' open faced club head action Henry Cotton would have been proud of! Look at the lower body people. He’s 60 and check out his calves. The lower body creates stability,balance, rhythm and rotation in his hips. But, that’s a gift he was born with.

    I've always noticed how quiet Freddy's core and legs are during the first half of his backswing.It's as if he is just picking the club up with his arms and hands and then a little past halfway he really starts to turn and engage with the rest of his body.

    I think he's probably the most well-liked person on the PGA tour. Can you imagine where he would be if he never had back problems. Even with the back problems in my opinion one of the greatest golfers and people you could ever meet

    He stays centered, without much shifting and rotates using his front shoulder like a pendulum. Great swing!!!!

    I love to watch all the great golfers but If I had to choose only 1 to watch out of all of them....it's Freddy. His swing looks like he is just taking a breath of air, so fluid and so natural. The slight hesitation at the top sounds like a great way to "set" your body the downswing.

    I remember Curtis Strange on a broadcast once and he said: Nobody hits the ball as solid as Freddy. He said it may not always go where he wants it to, but he hits it in the center of the face every time.

      I know a couple golfers from western Canada that don't use a glove or just use a rain glove all the time.

      Growing up, I played without a glove because gloves were expensive and never seemed to go an sale. It wasn't because of the rain.

      What's the reason Fred don't use gloves?

    • @Tapioca674
      @Tapioca674 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@felix11163 I heard him say that he hates not being able to feel the club fully. For that same reason, he won’t shake hands with anybody when playing. Says it leaves behind something that gets between his hands and the club. Instead, uses fist-bumps.

  • @MrZola1234
    @MrZola1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    He has a bit of a homemade swing that is not easy to duplicate. He brings the club back on an outside-inside path (opposite of what is typically). Then, he makes a very athletic move to drop it back into the proper slot on the downswing.

    05:03 every practice swing is the same. Just a nice brush of the grass. No dirt no complete air. How do you stay that level?

    I tried to copy his swing when I started in my 30s and became close to a scratch golfer. Last index was 4.5 at age 56. The secret to his swing to me is the right elbow and the way he lifts and drops it. It is unusual and he picks up a lot of speed with that.

    That pause at the top creates the timing to let his hips release and slide through … that’s where the silky power comes from.
