Claudette Colvin was a dark skinned woman who did the same thing. The leaders of the movement decided to popularize Mrs Parks civil protest because she "presented" better. Colorism is a real thing and has sadly been a part of the struggle.

Friday Saturday nope. Claudette and others wasn’t chosen because of background not color. The civil rights movement was always careful of making sure background didn’t impede the exemplification of injustice. Like today, they try and use background of victims of police brutality. They wanted no felony’s or info that could be used against the victim in highlighting each case

If you don't want white people teaching anything, you are going to be facing closed schools in all major cities. Less than 20% of public school teachers are minorities (2015-2016 school date - most recent I could find published), 80% are white! Many teachers are leaving the system. I myself left after 7 years in at-risk schools. The stress took a toll on my health and I spent more time in the hospital and doctors offices than I had in my life total (exaggeration but it felt like it). Most of the time it isn't the 20-30 something teacher, it is the curriculum and the auxiliary reading lists. Also, teacher education is not what it used to be. They take semester courses in a certain curriculum and don't learn everything. Some probably don't even know about the white washed education they too received. Better idea, more comprehensive teacher programs in college (better than no child left behind) teachers that have certifications in very specific areas so they can study more in regards to American History and not be bogged down and miss information by taking required classes that aren't useful. Also, American Text book companies need to revise their content. Perhaps, a task force should be initiated to discover and rewrite based on factual historical evidence. There are certain things the American People (African Americans, European Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans...) care about my hope is that we can come together to fight for equal representation in truthful education.

Misguided attempt to make her actions more "palatable" or an attempt to make Rosa Park appear a helpless victim?
While it is inevitable that any historical event will ultimately be revised over time as a result of biases of the "historian" in question; as well as general societal trends in terms of ideology, this is usually an incremental process that takes centuries to occur. That this has occurred within less than a century in the case of Rosa Parks is alarming for several reasons and one is forced to wonder at the reasoning.
One one hand, this may be the result of a misguided attempt to exaggerate the unjust position in which Rosa Parks was placed. On the other, it may be a deliberate device to make her appear more of a victim in the situation for those that do not realize the victimization inherent to the system at the time. It may also be an attempt to make Rosa Parks otherwise unremarkable. Whatever the reason, it is dangerous to change the facts of any historical event in even the most trivial of details.
It is, unfortunately, complacency that allows any history to be "white washed" or altered so creating awareness about the issue is important. The question being; is it enough to prevent the tainting of historical events being taught to children? Is it enough to make the school systems fact check the text books and correct the incorrect?
This problem is not exclusive to the USA.

Another thing America is not sharing about Rosa Park is that the astronomy community named an Asteroid in space after her. I had to learn about that from a BRITISH (London) television show. And they honored her back in 2012. Here it is 2018 and I just found out about it. I asked my facebook followers about it and they didn't know. The asteroid 284996 Rosaparks was discovered in 2010 by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer space telescope.....owned by NASA an American company It was named in her honor in 2014, not 2012. (Wikipedia). There are many things about Rosa Parks also listed on Wikipedia that I didn't know. Newsfash............no one is hiding that information. The truth is the truth and has no bearing on skin color. Events of the past can be told by anyone , especially an honest participant in the actual event. There can be a difference of opinions based on various perspectives for said events and then the reality of what really happened. The term oppressor strongly suggest that all of history is biased and that all written history is only available from a group who oppresses. This is hardly the reality. I'm not saying that everything in all history books are 100% accurate, but to suggest that we do not have many alternative perspectives on our History is not being honest. We have plenty of books on historical events that conflict with varying narratives.

    • @cliffb1932

Lance Zenner your explanation make sense. Not all history is biased but an oppressed history is likely biased. For example they lied about the death of Steve Biko. I grew up in racial South Africa and there is a lot of stories that did not happen as they are told.

I understand the perspective; I admit that I was under the impression that Rosa Parks was much older, and I indeed remember a long-ago teacher emphasizing that she was a poor, defenseless old lady. I must say, though, that as a child I never sensed that teacher was anything but 100% on her side. (In fact, I think he genuinely thought of her as a hero!) If his characterization of her was offensive, he was completely unaware that it was. I rather think--in the case of my old teacher, at least--that he was only exaggerating Parks' helplessness to underscore the nastiness of her white bullies. Ignorance in any form is unfortunate, though. Teach the real Rosa Parks!

Before the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 there was the Baton Rouge (Louisiana, 1953) bus boycott; before seamstress Rosa Parks' arrest there was then-15 year old Claudette Colvin who was arrested in March 1955 (9 months prior to Rosa Parks' arrest for the same act in the same city), and before Claudette Colvin there was activist Homerè Plessy (Plessy's mother coincidentally was a mixed-race seamstress also named Rosa), a white-passing creole man from New Orleans who staged his arrest in 1892 in protest of Louisiana segregation laws. The Plessy vs Ferguson case solidified legal segregation in Louisiana and throughout the South until it was slowly overturned through cases such as the Brown vs Board of Education case in 1954 (Kansas, represented by NAACP Chief Counsel Thurgood Marshall). Not surprisingly, many neighborhoods, churches and schools throughout the south remain segregated today.

I'm white, and it's taken many years for me to slowly start learning the real history. The high school education system is failing at depicting the true history. And when history is lost, or twisted, it seems that it's enabled my fellow white people to wash their hands of responsibility to correct the mess that they (we) have made. I have a goal to learn as much of the truth as possible and speak on it.

The problem sounds like the man’s son wasn’t taught much about his people’s history until he had already gotten the wrong info at school. Then his dad made the correction. Reactive instead of proactive. His dad should’ve been teaching his son about his history all along.

I am a white male with a PhD and 2 Masters degrees. Throughout my education I have received extremely little history / information regarding the experience of blacks in America. So on my own I have read Malcolm X, Fredrick Douglas, Nat Turner, Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Booker T Washington, Clarence Thomas ..... The history of blacks in America is one of tremendous strength, courage, dignity, intelligence, wisdom and determination to gain their God given freedom and rights. It is truly a shame that our school system does not teach any of this, as these lessons would improve the character of all citizens and would increase the number heros and role models for the young.

1st of all....im white. 2nd I have never heard Rosa Parks be referred to as old or as having tired feet. What I do remember learning is that she was tired of being a 2nd class citizen and decided to stand up by sitting down. Now, I do not know about Rosa Parks life any more than I know the life of George Washington because I have not studied either of them nor do most schools go into detail about either of them. But let me make a point about education in general. Who controls what all kids learn in school? ALL history is being "whitewashed". From the "discovery" of America by Columbus to Declaration of Independence. Those in power are the ones to gain from it and they dont care about race....they care about money and power. They only use race to keep us divided. They keep the truth away from us to divide us. The enemy is not the white man, the white man just happens to be the enemy. And I will make sure that my multi racial daughter knows her true history..... from slavery, to civil rights, to annihilation of native people and the deceit of the European war mongers in power. I will not rely on someone else's "education". Agree or not. Just my 2 cents.

Wouldnt it be wonderful to have all histories based purely on fact, with no trace of bias? History should NOT inspire passion, pride or remorse, it's not ammunition to point fingers or take credit, its an opportunity to learn from the mistakes of those before us and build on lessons already learned, which cannot happen if its filled with half truths and cover ups.

Not science, math and the majority didn't occur with the Romans or Greeks, rather with Europeans during the Enlightenment after Aristotle died and his works were translated.

Mexicans are mestizos, therefore they aren´t aztecs. And saying that mexicans would be only aztecs means that you are ignoring every other tribe, which were in fact opressed by the aztecs...
And saying that the Romans and Greeks learned everything from ´khemet´ means that you ignore how societies worked back them, no one taught the other one how to do something, every contact and exchange they made was highly related to trade, thus focused on goods they needed from each other. Implying that Romans and Greeks learned EVERYTHING from other cultures doesn´t explain how they ended so dominant in back then.
your comment made no sense, but at the end it won´t matter since ´´I´m in denial´´

@@triggerme6144 The Muslims held the knowledge of the Greek philosophers for centuries, and they themselves only translated the works, but did not make any contributions of their own. Or so, you would have us believe.
The Sumerians ans Egyptians built pyramids, had sophisticated calendars, could measure astronomical phenomenon and events. Yet, you would have us believe that philosophy, mathematics, and science, were created by Europeans, and only advanced by Europeans. You would have us believe that the Greeks laid the foundations of all knowledge and philosophy, and it was only Europeans who were able to build on that knowledge, after they were able to translate the works from Arabic to Latin.

An important part of strategy I think is to get the various state boards of education, especially Texas and California to care enough about this issue that they will pressure school textbook publishers to publish accurate accounts of Rosa Parks in the textbooks. If Texas and California push for this it will affect textbooks all over the nation.

No you’re completely correct on the fact that this should NOT be the burden of children. Unfortunately, most elementary school teachers come from Child Development degrees. Teaches them nothing about history, sociology, political science and economics. Not me, I’m happy I’m coming from a degree in the humanities that exposes me to research techniques and the prevelance of false information.
