I think it was Hemmingway (might be wrong) who said something to the effect of: Anyone can survive adversity. To truly test someone's character, give them power. Ironwood failed this test in every imaginable way. He is the perfect example of someone who thinks the things they do are right because they are the ones doing it. Because they have what they call 'the will to act'. In their minds they can never be wrong. Can never be disagreed with. Can never be argued against. Such people can start with perfectly valid, honorable, and even laudable reasons. Doesn't take long for those reasons to become nothing more than gaslighting. Ironwood is just Adam on a larger scale and much larger body count.
Idk, I think rwby had some part in that I mean he was fine up to vol8 always defending and assisting them where he could, giving them shelter, upgrades, their frickin' licenses, telling them ALL of his plan and just GIVING them back the relic. In return they betrayed him to robyn the one person who stopped amity from being finished and could've just as well been an agent of salem and leaked top secret info to her. Now with salem on his doorstep he lost 1 maiden, 1 relic is in jeopardy, and atlas is in total danger along with mantle just because rwby thinks they can save everyone which ironwood knows they can't with salem herself here and her entire council and he knows they need to gtfo of there. #IronwoodDidNothingWrong

It would just earn him and Atlas the honour of being the last people on Remnant to be destroyed by Salem with literally 0% chance of any aid coming because Salem has killed everyone else. And to counter the argument that's always used against this point before it's made, the fact that no aid arrived to Atlas after Ruby's message either is false equivelency. Yes, no aid actually arrived but that doesn't mean the other Kingdoms weren't preparing to send any, in fact, we know for sure that Vacuo was preparing to send help but they just weren't quick enough. Whereas if we go with the scenario of James' plan winning the day, everyone else on Remnant is wiped out and when Salem comes back around to wipe out Atlas, with three of the four relics in her possession too let's not forget, Atlas is doomed anyway. All Ironwood's plan achieves is delaying the inevitable while at least Team RWBY and the rest of the crew's plan allows them to fight another day and doesn't leave everyone else on Remnant to die. And in the end, Ruby's plan at the end of the volume achieves what Ironwood said he wanted to do anyway: Save who they can. Uktimately, Ironwood is completely and objectively in the wrong when you look at it fairly. And yes, Ruby and the others certainly contributed to his descent into madness, I won't argue differently. However, it doesn't excuse how Ironwood's attitude and mentality basically becomes "Well if _I_ can't be the one that gets credit for saving the world then no one can be".
