For those watching, it should be mentioned that after you take the measurement for the neckband, multiply it by 0.85 (which is 85%) to get the new measurement. If you use the regular measurement the neckline will still out, fold over and refuse to stay flat. Stretch fabrics have a mind of their own when I first started copying clothes I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out how to do the neckband.

Emily W what stitch do you use. I assumed straight stitch would no longer let the neck stretch as it goes over your head. Thanks for the 0.85 tip!

@@saramccracken5342, I use a small (narrow) zig zag stitch (03 on the Brother Project Runway CE-5000PRW). It has the appearance of a straight stitch but allows for stretch.

@@lisafeldmann9863thanks for replying! I don't have a Brother so could you possibly take a close up photo with a ruler nearby? I don't understand" the appearance of a straight stitch"

Sara mcCracken A very narrow zigzag stitch will stretch, but will not be too wide (as would the width we think of when we typically consider a zigzag stitch) to prevent the seams from functioning as they would if a traditional straight lock stitch were used.

Fantastic tutorial, thank you! I'd like to have seen the final t-shirt though. And perhaps someone wearing it.
P.S. at the minute mark around 9:43 when you sweep the excess paper away, I cringed because you didn't close your rotary cutter and I visualized something I've done before...while sweeping something away I brushed the rotary cutter and sliced my hand open. It was pretty severe because I had a new blade in, and it taught me to always close the blade before I lay it down. Even if I'm getting ready to pick it back up to use, always close the blade. Anyhow, just wanted to say what a great teacher you are, and thank you!!

In a crunch, I've recycled shipping cellophane bags, clean bags from boxed cereal or unused left over painter's vinyl plastic floor covering. Because they are clear sturdy products, they can be used to trace commercial patterns to preserve all its sizes as well as a reusable pattern that does not tear easily. Be careful - wet Sharpie ruler marks & lines smudge, give it a second to dry or lift up ruler - do not swish ruler across ink in preventing drag marks ...

diana diamond multiply the length by .85 to get the new length. This will ensure the proper neck fit. Ex. If the total measured band length is 12 inch. Then 12 x.85 = 10.2 inch. This works perfectly for knits, due to the stretch. Good luck.

Hi! Great instruction video, thank you!
I like to make my own patterns and templates from freezer paper! Cut the freezer paper to the appropriate size needed!
Mark the pattern on the freezer paper and cut it out! It’s the waxy-backside of the freezer paper that goes down on the fabric, then when it’s ironed, it sticks perfectly and peels off easily leaving no damage or residue on the fabric and can be reused many times! Be sure to use your fabric’s correct ironing temperature!! Don’t mind if the freezer paper gets a little, “tanned”!! 😉
(Optional: Cut TWO appreciate sized pieces of freezer paper then iron the two layers together by laying one piece over the top of the other; the shiny-wax, BACK-SIDE goes over the top of the dull, FRONT-SIDE! This makes a thicker more manageable pattern piece!)
    Happy sewing! 😃

Very cool! I had a tee I loved, but had gotten holes in it, so I cut it into pieces and created a pattern from that. But I was looking for a way to recreate one without taking it apart. The term "rubbing off" always makes me laugh, in a morbid way, because it reminds me of people that use paper a chalk to copy off the engraving on gravestones.

This is cool. I like my tee shirts fitted and long. Difficult to find my size and shape in a color I’d like.

Why would ANYONE give Mimi a thumbs down? She is absolutely amazing giving instructions!
I have never used my own clothing for a pattern....but this is something I am going to try. (BTW, I've been sewing for 41 yrs. My DH surprised me with a Kenmore Sewing machine 2 months prior to my daughter being born!! Back then, scans were WAY off into the feature(at least where I lived) and so you didn't know if the baby was a boy/girl....except for the difference in heart rate....but sometimes that didn't ring true either. I wanted a girl sooo bad...and when she was born (she is our second child) I couldn't stop smiling from ear to ear....pinching myself to make sure I actually realized I had a little girl!....Anyway, my MIL taught me how to sew over the telephone due to the fact that my DH was in college in another state. I was absolutely amazed that my MIL talk me how to sew basically over the phone. She recommended "Simplicity" Jiffy Patterns...and told me not to get discouraged that the first few things I made weren't going to look great, but that was OK she said.....my ability to sew would get better with time..and she was so right. I've made everything my DD wore for the first 12 yrs of her life (except tights and socks!)……
    Thanks Mimi....you are amazing! :)

Thank you so much for this instructive tutorial, Mimi. A silly question: Why did you have to take a 1/4 of an inch out of the sleeve?

I believe it's because the front is curved to allow for better range of forward motion, and because a person's back is generally flatter than their front. This TH-camr (withwendy) explains for the asymmetry in a similar video around 2:30 and 3:30: th-cam.com/video/KeJjB-bdzuI/w-d-xo.html

    Great video!
I haven't sewn a garment in 15 yrs and I would have totally messed up the seam allowances.
Thanks for the video, I am going to subscribe right now😊

OMG-your detailed instructions are amazing. I loved the idea of using a tracing wheel. I could never figure out how to transfer various details from my favorite shirts onto the pattern pieces. I’m talking about creating an asymmetrical, shark bite or swing bottom on the shirt.
    Thanks so much Mimi . . . 🤗
I do have one question. What type, size and weight are the washer you use as pattern weights? I was in Lowe’s the other day, and picked up some washers. However, after watching this video, and seeing the size (diameter) of the weights your using, I’ll be returning them.🙄

I buy whatever size they have, LOL sometimes the bigger ones and sometimes the ones that are slightly bigger than a quarter

To reduce the slippage of the weights while on the paper you can spritz some sewing adhesive or spread some rubber cement on one side so that they have some resistance to wanting to slide on the smooth paper. Use taped grocery bags/newspaper to trace, wallpaper or the paper stuffing that comes in Amazon shipments. Just iron the crumpled up paper a bit. If you do not have a tracing wheel use a needle or pin to punch through the fabric of an existing garment seam line that you want to record on th4 pattern that you are creating.

I love this video. I do have one comment, t-shirts have different measurements for the sleeves curve for the front and back. Less curve in the back, more in the front. The curve of the sleeves is also different in the front and back. That way the t-shirt will have a better fit.
