    An informative and straight-forward instructional video. As per a previous comment the audio narrative (which is competing against the outside environment/elements) can be better as it detracts from what is otherwise a great video.

    Hi Steve,
    I followed your guide and managed to get my roof felt on almost perfect. However, I realised I made a small mistake. I cut the over hang of the roof felt on both the left and right of the shed like you did - no problem.
    However, I also did this for the rear of the shed (the eave). This means the roof felt ends exactly where the timber ends. There's no excess overhang of roof felt past the timber.
    I plan to install the guttering at the weekend.
    With this in mind, have a caused a big problem in relation to the water running off the roof felt into the gutter but because there isnt any excess I'm maybe exposing the underside of the timber to water damage over time? (The shed is painted/treated).
    Thank you

    • @callumwhite2116
      @callumwhite2116 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hope I'm being clear - basically the rear edge of my shed looks like the sides of the shed. The roof felt comes down and over but stops exactly in line with the timber as I used the Stanley knife to cut along the timber just as you did at 6:32

    • @FixitwithFowler
      @FixitwithFowler  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hi, thanks for your comment. You ideally need the felt to hang 10-20mm lower than the timber to create a drip edge and prevent capillary action where the water can trac back onto the shed. Can you slide an offcut underneath the felt?

    • @callumwhite2116
      @callumwhite2116 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@FixitwithFowler I keep trying to respond but it keeps getting deleted.
      I do have excess but I wouldn't be able to get it under without carefully and meticulously removing the nails, positioning the felt under, while pulling the existing felt down to make sure it's tight as well as hammering the clout nails back in. It'll be a nightmare.
      I think my best is trying to waterproof/protect the underside of the timber as much as possible? I've found this tape which is a substitute for lead around windows and roofs (I think I can't post the link here as my comment keeps getting deleted): it's called 'Roof pro Butyl Silver Tape (L)3m (W)100mm' and can be found on B&Q website.
      Combine that with positioning the gutter so it meets the roof felt, blocking water from running underside to the timber?
      What's your thoughts please Steve?

    • @callumwhite2116
      @callumwhite2116 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've just checked it, there's a little overhang but probably not the ideal amount. I'm just going to make sure the underside of the timber has plenty of treatment and install the guttering to divert water away from the underside of the timber. I'm sure it will be fine. Thanks Steve.

      So long as the gap isn't very big, then you should be fine without it, but it will stop any felt adhesive dripping into the shed.

    What keeps water from entering between felt and edging, resulting in rot due to trapped moisture? Would it be advisable to run a bead of caulk between the two surfaces? Have you ever done a gambrel roof with felt?

    • @FixitwithFowler
      @FixitwithFowler  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Lori, do you mean the cladding strips that go over the felt on the front and edges? These were painted prior to being installed, so it should last a long time. You could use outdoor silicon, but i never have. As for a gambrel roof, you can just apply the same principles for the felt as per my video. Just make sure you plan where the overlaps in the felt will be and allow for a full strip of felt for the ridge. Hope that helps!

    • @FixitwithFowler
      @FixitwithFowler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Aidan, Thanks for your comment. If you are just going to use nails, then you could go over the existing felt. However, if you want it to last, i would advise removing the old felt, which doesn't take long. Most shed roofs fail during windy weather. This is due to a lack of mechanical fixing. By using adhesive and nails to fix the felt to the shed roof, you will increase the felts' life span. Don't forget that adding guttering will also prevent the shed from rotting near the base! (I have a video on this). If you haven't already, please subscribe to my channel! 😊

      Poor quality grade of felt, environmental issues such as animals on the roof eg birds squirrels cats etc, overhanging trees. Polyester felt is strong which doesn’t rip however it is expensive but well worth. Just make sure the felt has some form of polyester. Nails every 2 inches, the glue worth using but it’s not essential however if your shed is in an area of the garden which is targeted with wind,rain or environment then the adhesive is best to use. Stay away from cheap felts as they normally rip when simply handling it. Best of luck.

      Hi, i would always recommend removing the old felt. If you don't remove the old felt first, then the new felt will definitely not last as long as it could. Its really important to glue the new felt directly to the wooden roof. Hope that helps

    Thanks for the video. We're looking to felt a kids playhouse and the roof is full of gaps. Do we need to fill those before we put on the adhesive? Or is it thick enough that it won't drip through and make a mess of the inside?
    Also, does the felt need tacking down onto the actual roof or is it ok just to nail down on the sides? As there are no strips of wood to attach to, the wood is really thin.
    Thanks!

    • @FixitwithFowler

      Hi, unfortunately the adhesive will go through the gaps. I would recommend tacking the felt down on the roof to prevent ant lifting. You can get small 13mm roofing nails for a thin roof. amzn.to/436rlUC

      Hi Hudsonsoul, this was my own shed so i thought i would make a video to show people how easy the process is. If the roof was any other shape then i would of made a video of doing that roof. In the summer i will be changing a flat roof to a pitched roof and using onduline as the roof covering.

      @@FixitwithFowler hi, I’m a carpenter but for the last 5 years l been primarily making summerhouses and sheds so l know how to do them with ease, however you know what it like, we always try and find other ways on TH-cam to see if anyone has a better way of doing things and yet felting awkward shaped roofs there’s no video’s out there. Nice job. It’s worth buying nails that won’t go through the roof covering but you could foresee the issue. I’m actually doing a pyramid style roof at the moment on a a 2400 x 2400 so l may upload a video and it probably will be the first TH-cam video of felting a hipped roof. Only just found your channel, keep up the good work.

    • @FixitwithFowler
      @FixitwithFowler  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most felt roofs fail due to poor materials, lack of mechanical fixings (both nails and adhesive) and poor installation. I would always advise using both felt adhesive and clout nails as lack of mechanical fixing is the biggest cause of felt roofs to fail.

    Hi. Nailing the felt down on top of the roof, won’t you get water ingress through the nails ?

    • @FixitwithFowler
      @FixitwithFowler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you could. However, if you use felt adhesive underneath, it forms a seal around the nail, and also, the final bit of adhesive over each nail is a belt and braces approach!

      @@FixitwithFowler I did our ancient shed that we inherited when we bought the property 40 years ago with torch-on mineral faced felt, observing all the good practices for bitumen felt roofs. This shed was taken down last year because it eventually rotted from the ground up. The roofing felt and timberwork was in good serviceable condition and could have lasted much longer.
      Shed felt is the lowest grade bitumen roofing felt and with the adhesive costs about £35, whereas the torch-on is £65. The £30 e.o. price is hardly worth worrying about especially since the torch-on lasts many times longer, with the labour about the same for both.
