Regardless of what or who was right in this case, this is why you don't start altercations with strangers. You never know what anyone is capable of. Its not worth acting tough in front of your friends no matter who is at fault you can always walk away. This whole scenario was senseless and could have been avoided.

Someone with the man’s own group saw what happened and testified. The reason he saw it was because he followed the old man. He wanted to make sure he was okay because someone might think he was up to no good, like looking at children. That’s the same thing the group of young people said. Then people started touching him if you have people who are yelling and being rude in a threatening manner and someone you don’t know comes up to you and touches you while being hostile defend yourself point blank. Easy to say but if you've got 4-5 people attacking you...walking away may not be an option. Add to that, the terrain they were in...shallow water and heavy vegetation? Hard place to run away with all the teenagers on the shore. I've been in similar situations as both a civilian and a deputy, in most of the cases...I was lucky enough to be armed most of times. Fortunately, I didn't have to seriously hurt anyone but I do understand the fear. Mob mentality, especially with drunk teenagers, is a very dangerous thing.

Your argument isn’t an attempt to excuse him slashing and killing people, but rather an attempt to highlight that the people who were harmed very complicit to the events that unfolded. Two things can be true at once, they participated and arguably augmented the crime committed against them. Had they just left the dude alone and stopped insulting him, maybe he wouldn’t have slashed them. Someone died because of their behavior. Rest in peace Isaac, very unfortunate.

I've seen and read about this case. The man was assaulted multiple times and every person he stabbed literally had a hand on him and he never lunged or even took a single step. They were in the process of assaulting him. That should have been considered when they charged him. Not defending his actions but there are two sides to this story. He deserved the charges he got because he did go back near the group but he didn't deserve the sentence. In fact I cannot understand how so many of those vile teens didn't get charged with assaulting him.

If I found myself surrounded by an increasing number of intoxicated people accusing me of being a CP, I’d absolutely fear for my life. It’s well-known that most people have an immediate and often violent reaction to CPs and for understandable reasons. Among a drunk crowd, these accusations, whether out of a twisted sense of humor or a misunderstanding, can quickly morph into an absolute fact. Add some water to the situation, and hell no. I want to say I'd run instead, but in that situation, who knows..
Anyways, this is precisely why, after a self-defense situation, you should never answer questions without legal counsel. We’ve all experienced moments where we misinterpreted events in the heat of the moment only to later realize our initial memories were far from what really happened. No matter how much you want to cooperate, the safest course of action is to remain calm and silent, and wait for an attorney.

Every action has a reaction. I will never condone what happened however this is a direct result of today's society and people not used to having to deal with real reactions or being held accountable for their words, ridicule, or approach. This is especially true in our youth and you can hear it in their voices laughing until reality hit.😮 Yes, he could have walked away. However, there is also a lot of responsibility and blame to be put onto the "victim" party. People joke around with the F around and find out meme thinking they are tough. Well, this is the reality version of that. Sad for all involved and let it be a lesson. You dont know people or their capabilities and be respectful.

The fact is that the reaction was not proportional. You approach a group of kids looking for a lost item. They then, unprovoked, begin shouting obscenities at you. You should break contact and walk away. They can call you what they want, all kinds of names, just turn your back and walk away. Instead, he engages a large group, becoming upset that they are name-calling. He continues to press the engagement when a separate uninvolved group spells it out: "hey dude, you should break contact and walk away". The attacker is unable to break contact and walk away due to pride or ego, or alcohol, or all 3.
The attacker then becomes half-circled, with a clear exit behind him. He can still break contact and leave. Instead, for a 3rd time, he presses the engagement, but this time armed with a knife, and stabs 4 people. The kids were obviously being irate and obnoxious, however no clear crime occurred. Verbal slander and name-calling cannot legally be met with deadly force.
