    If you wanted to know how to use the Deluge with modular synths then this is the video for you! I’ll show you how to use the CV and gate outputs on the Deluge to control modular and semi-modular synths. You’ll also learn how to take advantage of the Deluge LFOs to simplify sending modulation, and how to make drone notes by using audio-rate CV and gate output from the Deluge. I’ll also give you some tips and tricks along the way to get the most out of the Deluge.
    NOTE 1: I use the mic input on the deluge in this video. It’s safer to use the line input jack when hooking up to synths!
    NOTE 2: I say 'LFO' occasionally in the video where I mean to say arpeggiator. Sorry about that!
    Take a look through this list of topics - I cover a lot!
    00:00 Introduction
    00:32 Connecting the Deluge to the 0-Coast
    01:27 MIDI DIN to TRS cable makes it simple
    02:00 Monitor audio via the Deluge line input
    03:15 What is Control Voltage (CV) and how does it work?
    03:30 What is a gate and how do you use them?
    03:50 Visualising gates and CV to understand them better
    04:30 Play the 0-Coast using CV and gate output from the Deluge
    05:25 Using CV outputs to modulate 0-Coast envelope decay
    06:38 Put CV values into the Deluge step sequencer
    07:05 Modulate the 0-Coast wavefolder using CV from the Deluge
    07:45 Send MIDI and CV values to the 0-Coast, play notes and modulate two things
    08:05 Use the MIDI B channel as a third modulation source from the Deluge
    09:08 How to use the Deluge LFO to modulate CV outputs - a quick way to change values
    10:31 Using the Deluge as a handy MIDI to CV converter
    11:23 Deluge LFO on CV track as a simple Sample and Hold generator
    12:35 Example of using LFO sample and hold; modulating filter cutoff
    13:27 Audio rate LFOs: sawtooth and triangle waves
    15:02 Stacking CV outputs to create 'fatter' drones
    16:01 How to adjust pitch of drones
    17:16 Create square waves using the gate outputs
    19:16 Outro and thanks!
    The Deluge makes an excellent partner to modular and semi-modular synths. But how does it all work? What is CV? What is a gate? How do you connect all the wires together? I answer these questions in this video. I’ll use the Make Noise 0-Coast and my modular rig to show you some tips and tricks for making the most of the Deluge paired with modular gear.
    Topics Covered:
    - How to connect the Deluge to a modular synth
    - Basics of CV and gate - what are they?
    - How does a CV track work?
    - Playing notes using CV and gate outputs
    - MIDI and CV together for more advanced control
    - Using a Deluge LFO as a sample and hold module
    - Audio rates from LFOs, using LFOs as drone notes
    - Use the Deluge as a MIDI to CV converter
    - Use the Deluge as a simple audio effects processor for your modular synths

    Great instruction, thanks for this. I’m wondering if the monitored synth part can be recorded on to the deluge to create an audio track on the sequence, allowing a whole composition to be made on the deluge with several audio parts?

    • @SynthDad
      @SynthDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can record the external audio into a track on the Deluge and then play that back with drums etc

  • @JohnTrasher
    @JohnTrasher 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice really helpful! Just got my niftycase and First modules and i figured that for velocity i need more Outputs. So i can use the midi out of the deluge to be converted to pitch by the niftycase and use the cv outs for velocity and lets say aftertouch (from an external keyboard controller)?

    • @SynthDad
      @SynthDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you want to send the MIDI from the external keyboard through the Deluge as MIDI converted to CV for velocity and after touch? The Deluge will record velocity and aftertouch from an external keyboard into synth tracks when you send it MIDI. But while velocity is recorded per-note the aftertouch becomes a modulation source that you then have to route somewhere internally on the Deluge mod matrix. I don’t know how you would send aftertouch values out as a CV source. I think it would be easier to use a keyboard like the Arturia Keystep to send aftertouch out of the mod jack and use that into your niftycase.

    • @JohnTrasher
      @JohnTrasher 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SynthDad yeah sadly i would need to rebuy a keystep again... ofc the keystep pro would solve everything since it has 4 configurable mod outs... but its around 350€ here... do you have an idea how to route the velocity on the CV out of the deluge? So say CV1 sending pitch data, and CV2 the velocity? maybe aftertouch is a little too much, modwheel is already working via MIDI -> CV converter on the nifty

    Hey! I'm trying to do this with the Behringer Crave. I'm hooking CV 1 and GATE 1 into Crave's OSC CV in and ENV GATE, respectively. I can get pitch to work (if I have a sequence going in the Crave and trigger notes on the Deluge the base note will change on the Crave's sequence). However, I cannot get envelope to work. I have tried switching from 5v to 12v and going into Settings and changing from V-trig to S-trig. Any idea what might be happening? Thanks

    • @SynthDad
      @SynthDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi - I saw your question over on the FB group so I answered there. I think this is something on the Crave causing it because I just tested it on mine and it works fine.

    i was thinking about modular + deluge and revisited this video; can for instance a module like Marbles sequence the deluge, and how would that be set up?

    • @SynthDad
      @SynthDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately the Deluge can only send CV/gate, and not receive them (other than as a clock). So you'd need to translate the CV/gate information from Marbles to MIDI to send to the Deluge.
      Now that is not too difficult - there are many modules that can do that for you (e.g. Befaco CV thing, or Ornament and Crime) but you'll need to set up the CV/gate to MIDI channel mapping on it, then learn that to the Deluge.
      So not impossible to do, but it takes some prep work

    I just received a Korg SQ64, but it's very clumsy and so I'm thinking of sending it back. In the meanwhile I just came across the Deluge, which I didn't know about. I'm using a mixture of modular, keyboard synths and a few other bits, and at the same time I need a sequencer to perform live (I'm a saxophonist), hence the SQ64 idea. I see you use your Deluge a lot - due to the worn off names - so I'd be interested to know how much you use your Deluge with modular and having only 2 outs (gate/CV) a problem or are you really satisfied. And lastly, any positive/negative comments about the Deluge (before I push the buy button)?

    • @SynthDad
      @SynthDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi - lots to answer here! And also very interested to hear your opinions of the SQ64 as I was thinking of getting one as well.
      Deluge is a fantastic sketchpad and groovebox. You can get a track up and running very quickly. It has a sampler, synth engine, sample playback and of course MIDI and CV sequencing of external gear. I've had mine about 2 years and love it still. Only drawback is the lack of screen - the 4 digit display can be awkward when navigating samples. So be aware of that. But everything is a button press using the pads on the front - no menu diving!
      It has 4 gate outs and 2 CV outs. Gate 1 and 2 provide gates tied to CV tracks 1 and 2. I use gate 3 as a run/stop signal, and gate 4 as a clock. Gates 3 and 4 go into Pams New Workout to sync it, and then Pams routes clock wherever I need it to go.
      I also use the CV.OCD desktop module to provide 4 additional channels of CV/gate/clock output. CV.OCD is a desktop version of the Hexinverter Mutant Brain. Takes MIDI input and gives you 4 channels of output (plus clocks etc). So in total that is 6 CV/gate channels which should be plenty unless you've a huge system.

      @cardboardmusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SynthDad For the Korg SQ64, here's a few thoughts (sorry to clog up the comments section).
      It theoretically has some great potential, but already when you mention 'menu diving', then you have to know the Korg is all menu diving. The fact that every note has to be dialled in is very infuriating, and playing them in live isn't really much easier even if you do use the keyboard setup. The basic idea of the machine is very good, but I somehow suspect it's going to have to wait until they do either a firmware update, or release a Korg SQ-63 MKII with things straightened out. Mine seems to have a few bugs (but it might be that I have/had a duff unit - I sent it back after a week).
      Another thing that didn't seem to work well - or at least as explained in the manual (which is very badly written), is the chain mode. The chain mode should let you decide on an order for your sequences so that they play automatically, but mine didn't do it correctly, although as I already mentioned it might have been a faulty machine.
      There is a nice pattern mode which similar to the chain mode, except you assign a pattern to a button, and when you wish to change, you select the next pattern. One odd annoyance is that it has limited choices for when the pattern changes - on the next beat, next bar, end of the sequence. Another nice idea when thinking about sequences in sync or not, is a feature which lets the machine either sync each lane with the others, or let them run freely (polyrhythm mode).
      Oh, there's no metronome, so if you want to start off recording a midi idea, you'll have to start by making a loop with some notes on it so you can hear the tempo.

    Hi, as a beginner to Modular I've studied this video over and over but can't work out where I'm going wrong. I've set up a sequence on a 960 analog sequencer that feeds CV and gate to a Neutron - all plays fine. I'm now trying to sync the 960 sequence with a track on the Deluge and so have taken the gate signal from the 960 through a Multiplier into the Neutron and a second signal from the Multiplier into the Clock In on the Deluge. When I start the 960 the Deluge starts in time but the Neutron doesn't. Any advice on fixing this would be greatly welcome. Thanks

    • @SynthDad
      @SynthDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you using a passive or active mult for the gate? I think what is happening here is the voltage level of the gate is dropping too low for the Neutron to detect it reliably as it is being split with the Deluge. An active mult will buffer the voltage so you don't get a drop out.
      Alternative is to send the clock in to the Deluge from the 960, and then clock out from the Deluge to the Neutron to save a mult module

    • @lyntonfairbourne7408
      @lyntonfairbourne7408 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SynthDad Thanks for your super quick response. I'm using a Doepfer A180-2 which I think is a passive multiplier so I've done as you suggest and gone from the 960 to the Deluge clock in and then Gate out to the Neutron Env Gate In. The 960 now starts/stops the Deluge but still doesn't trigger the Neutron.

    • @SynthDad
      @SynthDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lyntonfairbourne7408 Oh hang on, you’re trying to send a gate to the Neutron, not the clock? The Deluge will forward clock ticks but not gates. On the Deluge create a CV track and program in some notes (say on CV 1). Now connect gate 1 from the Deluge to the Neutron Env in. Does that trigger correctly? This is definitely an issue of not having either a) the right voltage level or b) too short a trigger from the 960 to the Neutron.

    • @lyntonfairbourne7408
      @lyntonfairbourne7408 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SynthDad Yes, the notes on the Deluge trigger the Neutron, its only when the 960 is introduced into the mix that things stop working the way I want. If as you suggest its either a or b is there a fix for this please?
