The best way to sail from the VI to St.Maarten is via Europe. That was my brother’s chosen route. How old is Rivers? My son stood his first solo watch a bit before his 10th birthday. Boat kids are the best. Between my brother and me, we boat raised 2 doctors and a Math prodigy. Boat schooling was wonderful. Some days school was onshore, other days, it was 30’ below the surface. We always put the kids in local schools when we wintered in Spain, France or the Islands. Watching your family brings back the best memories. Too bad there was no TH-cam in the 70s and 80s. Thanks to folks like you, my 76 year young self is shopping for a Prout to electrify. I may have a few more crossings left.
That’s so great to hear! We think it’s a pretty darn good education as well. A Prout sounds like a very good platform for electric. I’m sure we’ll show you a few things not to do along the way!
remeber when i think it is a song.. Rivers ARE WE THERE YET tipucal waves no dad i have seen bigger really this young man has evolved from the Bench. you were sitting on before he was born starting the advencher , been with you guys from the start look back Remember wen Tom T the roes crewsingmusic if we ever meet you better no them suther n cross puffff
Anytime you can go 8 knots towards your destination without motor going, it's a good sail and smart weather window decision. Look forward to renovations, particularly the electric engine and battery/solar setup.
Well played weather forecasting!! Great passage. I spied a Starlink McDishy Flatface on the stern of Ophelia. Would love if you guys would explain the good, bad and ugly of Starlink. Are you using it through an inverter or have you converted it to 12V dc operation? Do you use it offshore or only at anchor. Would make a great epsiode.
Every time you leave the dock or up anchor it is a gamble, the weather may look good you go out blowing 30. Bit rough your flying great sail little damp but you feel alive. Then there is the time it says 15 you go out it is 5. do you put the money using horse on or drift.
It will be so great to be all electric and no longer have the option to motor when conditions allow it for safety and comfort. We have sailed from the Florida to Thailand over the last 6 years and motoring is a fact of life if you don't want to take excessive risks. I see the logic with one electric motor but two is simply not a smart move. Good luck in St Marin it's a cool place.
Electrics most definitely won’t eliminate our ability to motor. We’ve done this for 5 years ourselves and have sailed 2500 miles of that on this cat with only one motor that we didn’t need to use much, most of it upwind. Folks with electrics generally only get into trouble with range if they don’t have enough charging options or just don’t understand how to use the electric motors efficiently. As for safety, in nearly all rough conditions situations, it’s far better to sail than motor, no matter what kind of motors you have.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but should your child not have on a lifejacket? If he’s sitting outside there are such things as rope waves matter fact, if you guys are on passage, shouldn’t all of you have on lifejackets if you’re outside I mean that’s common sense safety measures and it’s a must, it’s one thing to be careless with the maintenance of the boat but to be careless all around I mean don’t give me wrong. I love you guys I love what you’re doing the life that you’ve chosen but sometimes I think that you just not thinking.
Well life jackets are often a good idea, but for everyday living their cockpit and saloon are very safe. It's not likely anybody could go overboard. Now someone handling sails in rough weather might need lifejackets with clips for safety. They are absolutely being responsible enough, don't worry about what is happening. They have throwable safety gear as well and don't move so super fast and remember wouldn't be noticed overboard and easily recovered. Besides when you live on a boat you know what is dangerous, when it is dangerous, and what needs to be done to mitigate the danger.
With all due respect, in your words, I will correct you. Life jackets are not at all necessary on this type of boat in conditions like this passage. We realize it can be hard to “feel” the setup and layout of a boat just from video, but on a bigger cat like this (and most smaller ones) there’s simply no risk whatsoever of going overboard when you’re in the cockpit. You’re nowhere near the sides and the stern lifelines and bulkhead are chest high, not to mention all the structure around. Even in 20’ seas and 30+ knots the motion isn’t violent enough to put someone anywhere near going overboard. Rivers is never allowed outside the constraints of the cockpit except in very calm seas, with life jacket, accompanied by one of us. And for work forward of the cockpit I tether myself to the boat. And no, rogue waves are virtually nonexistent in any conditions we’ll ever be sailing in nor as destructive as depicted in movies and such.

Welcome ‘home’
Thanks brother!

Don't u hate it when the wind/waves don't do what they're "supposed" to do?! 😁
Right?! I mean get with the program!
I’m surprised you don’t t use a safety rope on your anchor chain. That is how sailing doodles lost his boat.
We do. It’s on the cleat right next to it.
@@SailAwayVlog that’s good

We agree! Even 4-5 works fine for us. We’re looking forward to it too!

We’ll definitely do an update on it. So far it’s truly been life changing for us.
Go where the wind blows
Always the best policy. Plan what you can then go with it.

Yep, planning only gets you so far. Usually down here in the trades, you get more wind than predicted almost every time!
Be safe
Thanks we will!
@@SailAwayVlog appreciate that like you guys
Awesome video guys! See ya next time.
Thanks for watching!
😎
Bravo 😊
Thanks!

Your experience is limited to the Caribbean where there's usually plenty wind. That won't be the case in the Med and you will learn a hard lesson.
👏👏👏👍👍❤️
First! I won lol😂
Nice! Thank you!
What's wrong with your audio😮
First 😂
Thank you!
your engine is very noisy
The camera makes it sound much louder than it is. It’s about the same as most marine diesels.
