Bishop Barron, I’m a priest and religious with the Legionaries of Christ and I just want to thank you publicly for the great content and inspiring perspective that you offer us for evangelization! I find your work helpful both personally and as substance for my own preaching. May the Lord continue to bless you and grant you many more years of Ministry!!

@@ding9633 I switched a few times. Catholicism- because of the mass. It is the highest form of prayer. But if you don’t know Jesus- go to a Bible believing evangelical Protestant church to learn the basic message of the gospel and learn scripture. Then, when you truly know the Lord, maybe then look into the Catholic mass.

I am a Baptist who has seriously been considering the path toward the true catholic faith (deciding between the RCC and EO is another matter) and have watched many videos, interviews, etc. on these topics. For whatever reason though, when Bishop Barron said of the saints "they're our friends" with a heartfelt smile, I was overwhelmed with emotion. Never quite heard it put like that. Thank you for this segment!

Bishop Barron: I am a protestant teaching in a Catholic school and have been pleasantly surprised at the loving acceptance of my "being" in the Catholic church. Never once judged and always included and valued. Not sure if a conversion is on the horizon, but my view of life has opened up due to the Catholic perspective. I'm sure there will never be a time where we agree on everything, but the desire to find out brings me closer to a more intimate relationship with God and the Catholic community. Thank you for all the insight and humility you bring in this video. Be at peace my friend.

I’m catholic and married a Lutheran. I never asked him to convert. After we had been married 30 years he started to attend RCIA. It was his choice. I greatly respected the person I married and I never wanted him to think I thought less of him by asking him to become a Catholic. It was a surprise.

@@josecesena5630 well, many do attend daily Mass, and actually the priests are indeed required to perform it every day. The question on weekly Mass is related to the Sabbath. We follow the Ten Commandments, and one of those is to keep the Sabbath holy. Sabbath is on Saturday for the Jewish faithful because that is part of the Abrahamic covenant. Christians honor the Sabbath on Sunday because Christ rose from the dead on Sunday and ushered in the New Covenant.
Hopefully that clarified some things. And hopefully I didn't mess up on any of the technical details. I am not a theologian, but this is what I remember from a homily where this was explained to us.

      I would agree with
Lars here. Being Catholic involves total submission to the teachings.
It's OK to doubt, it's not OK to deny.
As a new Catholic, my constant prayer was, 'Lord, I don't see how (whichever teaching) could possibly be true, but I know your Church is true. I will accept the Church's teaching, but please open my heart and mind to see how (whichever teaching) makes sense'.
Over time, it has worked. But we cannot say 'I disagree with the Chur h on (whatever teaching)' or 'I do not accept (whatever teaching).

    • @jwilsonhandmadeknives2760
      @jwilsonhandmadeknives2760 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I am in Lance’s corner here. There will always be conflicting interpretations on minutiae which is the entire purpose of the Magisterium. SCHOLARS within the church disagree on points, but the Church has to pick one side in order to move on. That does create an official stance, but it does not remove the validity of the contrary interpretation. If you’re going to teach catechism then you have to present the official stance, but in no way are going to go to hell if you don’t fully buy into it. There are disagreements which are worthy of discussion. As a Catholic, I have a serious problem with paid dispensations. It’s not enough to make me leave the church, but it’s crap and has zero scriptural support. Things like this are exactly what gives weight to the argument of Sola Scriptura.

My whole life, I can attest the powerful intercession of Mary - The Queen of All Saints, St Augustine ( my school’s patron saint), St Therese of the Child Jesus ( my personal saint from childhood) and St Paul ( my go to saint for zeal for God and serving in ministries). They’re like older, wiser brothers and sisters in Christ we can follow to grow in our faith. Be kind to yourself, be merciful to yourself, be loving to yourself. We think because it’s us, it’s okay. It’s not hurting anyone else. But it’s not okay. It’s hurting you. When you wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and instead of saying, “I’m getting so old; look at all these wrinkles. It’s all downhill from here.” Try a different approach. “Good morning, you good-looking thing. I am made in the image of God. I’m a masterpiece; I have royal blood flowing through my veins.” Stay positive toward yourself.

Hello Bishop Barron and my friends at Word on Fire. I am so happy to watch this video and others you've posted, to learn more about my dear faith. I was privileged to be raised Catholic, but felt pushed out once I started working and living in a large city with its many diversions, I felt I did not measure up. The part of me that wanted not to be known was delighted by it, but the authentic part of me still needed the communal aspect of our faith. All these years later now that I am retired I have found myself again, I have gained forgiveness and really all I want is the fellowship of the Catholic Church and the love of Christ. After everything I've come home. Shows like this were not there when I was a girl in the 70's or when I was struggling in the 80s and 90s to stay on the right course, I mean the right course for my own salvation and that of the whole world, thus I am so grateful to you. I hope Bishop that you can continue even if your role changes because I delight in how you articulate your responses to those who are also searching. You are a wonderful teacher and mentor, and Catholics around the world are honoured by your contributions. I could listen to your sermons, teachings and responses for hours and am fortified by them. I also really benefit by your rosaries and share in the beauty of the art and in your guidance through the decades and mysteries. Please don't go anywhere. Thank you for another wonderful, thought provoking and reassuring program. May God bless you, all your fellows and your good works. And to all those who click on this program, in the words of Saint (Pope) John Paul II, "follow Christ".

Here is a truly remarkable Christian, who is able to reach out and speak up as to the true and faithful teachings that follows truly our Lord and saviour, all Robert ever speaks of and expresses always make perfect sense and awareness in a world in desperate need of light, truth and hope.

Wow, thanks you for answering my question on the saints Bishop Baron! I only got around to listening to this video now in the hope that you had answered my question. I have a great reverence for Catholicism, but my culture is mostly deeply Calvinist or very Pentacostal (to over-simplify), so there is little to no dialogue with Catholics. I have found your channel so helpful, not only in learning about Catholicism, but also how to engage better with our culture as Christians. I am now very encouraged to learn more about the saints and how they can intercede for us.

Bishop Barron, this is a great video, as always. I’m a convert to Catholicism, and it might help you to know that many non-Catholics have no idea what a “saint” means in the Catholic worldview. It’s someone we know is in heaven (as well as meaning other things). When I say that to people, something clicks in their mind. Then they seem to better understand what I say next. I say “We know they’re up there rubbing elbows with the Big JC, and we have the miracles to prove it.” Then they’re like “Oh!”

My journey with Catholicism was not about what's in the Bible or what's empirically proven(the way many people say that they'll believe in God if God's existence is proven scientifically etc.)
Coming from a Hindu background, I didn't care much about Old Testament prophecies being fulfilled in the person of Jesus, because the Hebrew scriptures were of no significance to me as a Hindu.
Sola Scriptura did not make sense when, I was dabbling into Christianity, Protestants told me I was going to hell if I didn't join their denomination based on some Bible verses they quoted. A Roman Catholic priest told me that he was in no position to condemn me as a human being, and that I should keep close to Our Lady and keep coming to Church and let God do what He wants to do in my life. That made so much more sense. I did what he asked me to and today I identify as someone who believes in Catholicism/Christianity(it's been 17 years now).
Protestantism, if it were true, and God really took almost 1 and a half millennia to actually let His people figure out that they got him wrong, it really makes God a j*rk for deceiving His people for so long and then it only proves that the Holy Spirit never really guided the Church and Christ's promise of "with you always, till the end of age" was a big fat lie! This essentially disproves the authenticity of Christianity as a religion.
Also, without the magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church, "Bible Only Christians" make signs like "God hates fags", "All lives matter" and all other conspiracy theories that they come up with just from reading their King James Bible(which, as a matter of fact, is a Bible version tainted with the blood of so many who read any version apart from this "authorized" version.)
Protestantism also does not make sense to people in the East(India et al), because we cannot digest the fact that Jesus treated His Mother like a rented womb, and His other saints/martyrs like "use and throw" tissues. Catholic veneration of saints is more in line with family values and looking up to those who've already "walked the way" and left us with rich heritage and guidance in being faithful to the Lord. Protestantism is more like Western people tossing out their old folks in "old age homes" or "facilities" when they start becoming a "liability" to them. How and when did the person who did so much for you become irrelevant?

I enjoy hearing the logic, the passion and the perspective from Bishop Barron!!! I have been a Protestant Christian for nearly 50 years and I'd have to say the single biggest hurdle I have with Catholicism is the inclusion of praying to the saints rather then referencing them during prayers to Christ and here's an example prayer. "I thank you Jesus that you chose to use Saul of Tarsus in the way you did. Your timing is always perfect Lord. I thank you for how the timing of his Damascus road experience further strengthens my faith (because why would Saul persecute a non existent, non threatening group of people in the 1st century if they weren't so busy lifting up your name Lord? He wouldn't). So thank you Lord for Saul who became Paul!"
Now I believe I will meet Paul one day and I believe he would agree with that prayer if I shared it with him. I don't think he'd be aware of the prayer unless I told him because he's a man God chose to use. I believe it becomes a logical contradiction if God chose to give everyone a Damascus Road experience. We are sentient beings. We'd see God's hand (essentially a forcing hand), moving in perhaps a "too forceful way", such that we wouldn't be free to love Him (love can't be forced - or it's contradictory). We'd wonder when He would intercede again and it'd likely happen often due to how often we mess up! And yet at the same time I know that Paul is quite happy that God chose to separate him from a bit of his normal life trajectory and freedom! But I just can't believe that even with all of that God breathed wisdom, that he can hear or receive or intercede in prayer to God.
I thank you Bishop Barron for your words and your kind heart. God Bless! 🙏🙏

@YAJUN YUAN Scripture, as the only infallible source of doctrine, is not found in scripture. Personally, I defer to scripture on doctrine, and I trust the scriptures more than anything. But any part of Sola Scriptura is not found in the Bible, even thou I personally think that way. Timothy 3:15 says the pillar and foundation of truth is the living church. This is a good topic of discussion.

Review: you have improved in terms of pacing, coherency, and clarity. In the past I would have criticized your show as being not focused enough, and not direct enough. This episode was great, thank you Bishop for the use of very simple summing sentences, to go along with your rich vocabulary. That is what Rev. Fulton Sheen used to do, yes he would use technical language, but then he would always re-say it in a very simple way. My review is that this show has improved in every way I would have deemed necessary! Keep Up the Good Work! You are on the Right Path! for sure

    Bishop Barron and Mr Vogt,
I am a convert to Catholicism, coming into the Church with my wife last year from our Church of Christ denomination. Your work in the New Evangelization helped bring about our conversion, and I thank you for that. I first became interested in Catholicism and Orthodoxy from a pilgrimage (as I now see it) during study abroad in Rome and Greece in college. I also read a lot of the Tradition in my philosophy and theology program at Harding University. One thing that I loved and saw/see now as true is our Athanasian doctrine of theosis or the divinization of the faithful in beatitude. What I don’t understand and what prompted me to bring up this question is why, in this video and other Catholic media, do some of my fellow Catholics (lay and clerics) like you rush to concede to inquirers that the saints are not divine or even God-like as you do around minute 25? I know that we are seeking to avoid idolatry (false-latria), but it seems to me we need to emphasize that the saints are participants in the divine nature through the intercession of God in Christ (as you said in answer to the agnostic early on in the video, and as seen throughout the tradition all the way up to Lewis and the present day). You say truly that the saints are our spiritual friends and higher in intimacy or friendship with God and that they can intercede for us, which I all believe and profess. But, should we not go further and say that we know the saints have been theosized/divinized as sons and daughters in the Son, as partakers in the divine nature (2 Peter)? I especially see this with Our Lady, Mother of God, but also with the rest of the saints. I ask this question because I am not only deeply invested intellectually, but also spiritually, of course. What sort of truth do you see in what I saw and what might be pitfalls in this thinking?
Thank you, and I hope to hear your response or from someone on Word on Fire!
-Jacob Ross (John Henry Newman) Taylor
