As a Kentuckian, I have to say that Liam Neeson does a better impression of the Kentucky accent than most Americans outside of the state. People who aren't from the south never realize that there are different kinds of southern accents. Just another reason why I love Liam Neeson. ^_^

***** You have to laugh ..... a guy with the name Jason Gunn-Davis claiming to know what Irish people feel about their Irish-American cousins. Do these fallen-empire types ever stop trying to tell the Irish how to feel? As a born and bred Irish woman I am immensely proud of my Irish-American cousins and see them as an integral part of the Irish family.

Why does Jason, the 20 year old SNP voting Scot care?
Because logic dictates that an American is not Irish simply because their ancestors lived there.

Liam Neeson doesn't actually say much in this clip, in fact most of his responses are very short and brief. Despite this it's still a very funny clip, just shows Conan's skills as an interviewer - he can make dull people appear very interesting, whilst making the conversation feel very natural. Top notch.

Makes sense that the Kentucky accent sounds so similar, since Liam is from Northern Ireland and Appalachia was settled by people from Northern Ireland originally

      kevonmartini10
The people in Northern Ireland who settled the south of the US were in actual fact the children of Scottish planters. They would have had Scottish accents, it''s why the modern Northern Irish accent sounds so Scottish, and it's why Liam used the Scottish word word och

+Occams Razor I had to take a Dna test for the Shawnee tribe so I could join and get money for college, my Dna test was majority Irish and just barely enough to be considered Native American. So yes the Appalachias are full of Irish bloodline, I've read a lot about how this area's environment and climate is a lot similar to Ireland and that's the reason earlier immigrants settled here.

Love Neeson! I'm from Kentucky (backwoods) and my family (x8 brothers) are known for causing A LOT of trouble and most def inherited a reputation, SO my mother in all her wisdom shipped 4 of my brothers and myself to live with a uncle in Ireland. We fit in right off the bat and had no problem adjusting to the language because IT IS so similar! Needless to say, sending us to Ireland only fed our tendencies for mischief and have been ruling the island ever since.

As an Irish person I speak for many of us when I say there is nothing more annoying when people whose great great grand uncles best friends neighbour was Irish claim their nationality is Irish. Having Irish ancestry and cultural identity makes you Irish, knowing the cúpla focail gaeilge makes you Irish. But people whose identity is for example American their name is American their passport is American their accent their manner of speech and expressions, their very identity cannot claim to be Irish it's kind of offensive. Disappointing how many "nationality snobs" there are around here. Everyone in the US who's not Native American has blood from somewhere else. Nationality doesn't define your ancestry. What's basically going down in the shadowy sections of the comments: "You have 100% Irish blood, but how DARE you say that you are Irish? You were not born in Ireland; you're a disgrace to the REAL Irish, and we real Irish deny you of your Irish-ness!" Yes, let's all just toss any admiration for one's family background out because it is only exclusive to us! Well, won't you be sorry when one day you feel your culture is not appreciated or forgotten for good.
Would you all rather Americans just throw away the ancestry that they can so proudly trace back to? So what would you say they are, ethnically? That idiotic term: just White Americans, is that it? And then you have people in Europe talking about how European identity is fading and how no genetically indigenous people care or love their heritage anymore? The fact that some "white" Americans still care enough about their roots to acknowledge and embrace them is absolutely wonderful (I say this as a non-white person, too).
Your brethren may not be your nationality and live halfway across in a foreign land, but they have your BLOOD. The Irish, the Germans, the English, the Chinese, the Russians and etc etc etc-it goes for all "nationalities": You are of the same/similar genetic makeup (ethnically); it only happened that some stayed in their native country, and others went to live in America. And I agree, the people in their native home and the ones in America are NOT necessarily the same culturally, but how can someone go about rejecting the authentic blood of his brother? The mentality "I'm more real than you" is just distasteful.
FWI, stuff about ethnicity gets tricky here in the US. "American" is not an ethnic culture. Nearly everyone here came from somewhere else across either the Pacific or Atlantic. Their blood didn't stop running Irish because their grandparents landed in America.

Granted, I don't know how much Irish culture Conan has been around but it's just that a lot of the time, those who are so proud to claim the heritage have very little knowledge on the country, e.g. regarding news and politics, even history, etc.
Just in general, because Europe is so mixed, if our parents were already born in the same country as us, we're from that country. My friend is half Italian, half German, her mother is born in Germany after the grandparents had immigrated. I have never once heard her say she is Italian or Italian-German, she's just German. Same goes for my half Nigerian half German friend. Her dad is from Nigeria and immigrated a few years before she was born. Granted, she grew up living with just her mother but she has never said she's "African-German" or something like that. Lots of arguements in the comments below about Irishness. The same old discussion once again. Irishness.. is it an ethnic/ancestral identity or a national identity?? I have cousins who grew up in the bronx their mother is from Mayo their father is from Wexford. They spent most of their summers with us in Ireland when we were growing up. Their family always tried to to keep Irish culture and traditions alive within their community. They are quick to let people know they are Irish and take great pride in doing so. they also find it hurtful when people try to claim otherwise because they might sound more like Tony Soprano than Liam Neeson. are they more or less Irish than my neighbours children? My Neighbours came to Ireland from Lagos in the late 1990's. they are a very nice couple who have 3 children all born in Dublin, the 2 boys play hurling (Impressively so I must say), the girl loves Irish dancing (I am no expert but it looks like she knows what she is doing), they all went to the local gealscoil as such they all speak gealic (better than me I do admit), they speak English with Dublin accents (but I suppose no one is perfect)... you see, I am not going to say who is more or less Irish, my neighbours or my cousins. As an Irish man (both ethnically and nationally) I find It quite endearing to think an Irish American would feel a sense of cultural association with me based on ancestral connections. Likewise wheather you like it or not multiculturalism in Ireland is here to stay. I am glad to see how my neighbours children have embraced Irish culture, the land of their birth. In doing so they haven't in any way turned their back on African culture. I really don't know why people get so hung up on it to be honest. I have seen the hurt Irish Americans feel when they are told all their life they are Irish only to be contradicted by some keyboard warrior intent on imposing their world view on everyone. Likewise I can only imaging the disgust my neighbours kids would have if they were told they don't belong because of the colour of their skin or where their parents came from. I think people should just accept in the USA people use terms that reference a national identity (such as Irish, Italian, Mexican etc) differently from most other countries

It's a more nuanced issue than that, it's understandable if you had one gggreat grandfather but then he married off into the rest of society but in many cases as can be seen in Boston and with conan, they only stay within the diaspora, marrying and socialising with only other Irish peoples, this means that the concentration of Irish ethnicity and culture stays true, in my case I'm British yes, but I'm third generation Irish, I have the cultural background of Ireland and I speak Irish with my grandpa who did the same with his, we attend clan meets in Monaghan and practice the Catholic faith. Often in Britain or the americas because its such a patchwork of cultures there is no one singular American culture and hence people stick with the past. Also you have to remember that although great and even great great sounds long ago, that it's actually ver my recent, eg my grandparents visit the graves of their own grandparents each year and recollecting memories of them, with Ireland and Scotland having 60 million people of their ethnic grouping around the world it is the single most lopsided diaspora about so much so that Ireland has a minister for the diaspora. On paper the claim to Irish identity may seem annoying and vapid and this is understandable but in practice it's a way of life and often not a choice.

why would you care in fairness? It's all the same island, it's a bit odd hearing that come from someone with a surname like yours if you don't mind me saying. We (nationalists) have to live with union flags flying in the country and most of us don't care, it's all about give and take.

I'm not sectarian man haha I've had family members fight and die for Britain, many catholics also want to be a part of Britain. I agree it was a land took by force but I'm loyal to being a part of the United Kingdom and hope one day the country will have true peace. Sure nationalists will be pissed off and the day it becomes a united Ireland the unionists will kick off. So its all fucked

Northern Ireland is very different from the republic of Ireland :-) I live outside Derry in the country side and theres alot of places with Irish towns, road signs in Irish and English, Irish sports, flags, and just the hole Irish culture. My school even teaches the Irish language not alot of schools do that in northern Ireland mostly because northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom with more British/Scottish population than Irish. They even have there own schools and culture. I go to a catholic school so the Irish culture is everywhere. Its funny seeing Conan talk like Northern Ireland and the republic are the same place. But hopefully in the future Northern Ireland can Join back with the rest of Ireland:-) thinks to the UK leaving the EU :-D Scotland get your independence and retake your home :-)

+Anfubvinch Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (South) are different but they are both Ireland. Also, If you are born in Northern Ireland you are entitled to citizenship in the Republic of Ireland.
