Fixing New Holland 275 pickup head bearing - Quickest way for this 50 year old baler

  • My pickup head stopped and jammed breaking the drive chain. The bearing are bad. This is my mid summer repair. Instead of disassembling the whole thing I cut the shaft, as someone had done before me. Unfortunately while processing the video I lost the footage of cutting the shaft with a battery sawzall and welding it back in place using nice angle iron to maintain straightness. I would have deleted the whole thing but this is a second time this has happened on a baler and is likely a common problem. I wanted to make this solution available as the common repair on these balers is knotters.

      Hopefully yours comes apart to do it correctly but my method worked and it's making hay bales.

    I'm getting ready to replace the bearing and collar on the other side of my NH 68 Hayliner. Parts were ordered today. Your video answers the question if there were bearings on the other end of the shaft as well. So there is. I hope they are still good for now, because I didn't loom at that side when the pick up head was running. All i saw was the sprocket on the drive chain side wobbling like crazy! I have the sprocket off with the same gear pulling tool you used. Wish me luck!

    This is the reason why mechanics hate engineers. Having to cut and weld a shaft in order to change a bearing is simply ridiculous.

      It's not so much poor engineering as problems caused by age and rust. If the machine had not rusted in it's near 50 years, I might be able to change it properly. Besides, maybe I missed an easier way to do it?

    Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. How did your repair work, and has it held up? I'm looking for a bearing and collar repair video for the other side. I have a 68 Hayliner. The pickup head is chain driven on the flywheel side, and the bearing is completely gone except for the old bearing race on the shaft. The sprocket removal was easy enough with a gear puller. But my dilemma is the race is on the shaft inside a shaft tube. I can't get the puller teeth in there to get the race off of the shaft. After seeing a diagram of the shaft inside the tube, I think I might be able to just tap the race further back on the shaft with the new bearing going on. There is literally no way to tighten the set screw if I put the supplied collar behind the bearing anyway. So maybe the old race will keep the new bearing in place. There's nothing else inside the tube, so why not. I thought about making a slide hammer to somehow get a bite behind the race to hammer it out toward me, but I've got hay laying on the ground, so no time to mess around. The new bearing just arrived today, so wish me luck!

      It's worked well so far. I have a bit more time now as I'm retired. As for your problem, sure, if you can move the race that far who cares. I'd probably cut it with a torch.

      @@thewayidoit8895 Well, that was a bit more complicated than I'd hoped. Tapping the old race further onto the shaft was easy, but the outer ring wouldn't go in. Like there was a step behind it.
      Here's where I decided to just bite the bullet and pull the shaft from the other side. I broke that sprocket on that side with the gear puller, to reach the 3 small bolts holding the bearing plates. After removing those bolts, the entire shaft slid right out. From there I was able to remove both bearings and collar on both ends. I just recieved one new set, now I've got to order another. And that sprocket! Geez, I don't think it's available anymore. Gonna have to find a used one, or make one.

      @@SPCLPONY can you braze the sprocket back together?

      @@thewayidoit8895 I haven't braized anything since high school, and it was in 4 pieces. I did find a local dealer that had the second bearing and collar set today. Heck of a lot cheaper than the Ebay order for the first set. He also found a new sprocket to replace the one I broke, for $450! Hahahahaha! Long story, shortened, my brother who works at a machining/ fabrication company is going to make me a new sprocket & a spare, by Monday. I just finished putting the whole shebang back together with the exception of that sprocket. All in all, it wasn't too bad of a task. I learned a few things about my machine and now have a new bearing set on both sides. I only wish I could've made a video to share the info.

    Where did you get the bearings?

    • @thewayidoit8895
      @thewayidoit8895  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's been a minute since I repaired it. I believe they were "off the shelf" from my local "tractor supply" store. A standard size bearing- not a custom ordered size tha suzuki is famous for using.

    I noticed in your other video that your bale counter is mounted near the knotter assembly. Does it function? I can’t seem to get my new bale counter to trip and have no reference as it is not in the manual and it was missing when I bought the baler. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

      That is where they go. (In my experience with them). I can make a video tomorrow in between raindrops. I need to service my counter as the know to zero it is broken off. I should just chalk on the baler the bale count to keep track.

    So the alternative to cutting the shaft is what? If you just remove the cotter pins along the shaft will it not allow removal of the inside bearing? Or doyou have to drop the whole assembly out?

      That I don't know. It appeared to me the entire side has to come off (drive end). It was very hot when I was working on it and tough to think. I needed it fixed to finish some dry hay.
