if i would have to compare this watch to humans, i'd say it is the quiet guy who is always pretty calm and does not say much, but is a extremely cool guy if you talk to him
I could probably listen to you talking about Datejusts indefinitely. It's such a versatile and beautiful watch. I'm on the hunt for my first rolex personally (and first luxury watch, for my 30th birthday...) , A 2-Tone 1601 with gold hands and deep blue dial. Just found one... Anyway, I love your work man, It's so refreshing to hear you (and TGV or Federico for example) talk about watches when you are, like me, very fresh into the watch world. I had an image of a 40/50 something rich white dude hobby, and it's much more than that, thanks to you and other young guys on the Internet. Cheers!
I became obsessed with Rolex DJ watching the TGV review, I bought my last year and hardly wear my other Rolex watches. The versatility of DJ is legendary and watching your video reinforces the whole idea why I adore Datejust. Nice vid.
A nice and sympathetic video about Rolex Datejust. I think you've captured what's the essence of Datejust. It's a Rolex and therefore not quite cheap (even the vintage models), but the Datejust is at the same time quite discreet without seeming boring. I've had my Datejust 16014 (fluted, but otherwise similar to your silverdial) with gray tapestry dial since 1985. 35 years is many years and I'm still not tired of my Datejust. It also works excellent and runs fairly accurately (+/- 10-12 seconds in a week). It has had two major services and the Jubilee bracelet has been replaced once with a new original Jubilee bracelet.
Christian, because of your heartfelt commentary for these watches, I just purchased a 1986 16030 and absolutely love it! I've worn it with suits and jeans, and you're right...it's perfect for any occasion!! Thank you for being so honest and sharing your obvious passion for watches! Best, Keith
I've watched several videos of yours. I love Vintage watches but learning and I love Rolex. This video pushed me over the edge and I now know I want a 1974 Vintage Datejust and that's what I will wear with a strap. Dude this video is incredible!! I mean it.
Couldn't agree more. The Datejust (not the oversized DJ2) is a beautifully proportioned watch. I just got my hands on a 16018 with a satin Tiffany dial.. simply mesmerizing how it catches the light.
I was not really a fan of Rolex but I recently I purchased a 2005 white dial with white gold Roman numerals, engine turned bezel and jubilee bracelet with box, papers and even original receipt. It is stunning too look at and a firm favourite in my collection. They are very versatile and seem never to look out of place what ever you wear.
I have a 1967 white dial Datejust on a £13 leather strap. It looks great, keeps superb time and is a daily wearer. Perfect size for my skinny wrist too.
Great points. Casual / Dressy / Sporty. I agree this is a true versatile timepiece. In fact, after owning a number of other Rolex references, today my only Rolex in my collections is a 16253 (two-tone, Thunderbird). It fits most situations when wearing it with the right band. Cheers.
christian i totally agree to what you express in this video mine is a ref 16013 two tone fluted bezel 18 gold dial and jubilee bracelet from 1984 running just 6 s slow/ day and its a passion you discover when you wear them
I've seen that datejust with that fantastic lilac blue in another video of yours, and I believe I told you then as I am telling you now.. that is a gorgeous datejust.. Love it..
Very true, either you love a classic or prefer a modern watch. Hate it when someone compares a vintage to a modern quality. Doesnt make sense. Think about the time these pieces were made, and be able to stand out today. Simply amazing.
My first watch was a Datejust 16030, gifted for my Pharmacy School graduation, Datejust 16233 (MBA grad), Datejust 16234 (MPH graduation).... They’re the best.
You are almost as crazy about the DateJust as me. I purchased mine in 1981 at the age of 21. I have never owned a car, a home or anything of the sort. I have traveled, worked and lived across the world-my companion has been my silver 16030.
Just got a fully high grade refurbished late '60's 1601 on alligator last Saturday. Been wearing it every evening since. As I'm an ex-pro watchmaker, I immediately popped it open to admire the 1575. I could easily adjust it further, I have the Microstella tool - but plus 4,5 secs/24 is just fine for now. :-) It came with a refurbished 6251H bracelet in such fine state, that I don't dare wearing it. I've seen the prices of these bracelets on their own... Nice vid you made, dead-on.
Awesome video Christian! My father recently gave me his Rolex vintage DJ with white gold fluted bezel on jubilee. The bracelet is too small and he cannot find the extra links so I've put it on nylon nato for now but I do intend to find a nice leather nato in the near future. You are so right, this watch is amazing!! Looking forward to your future videos!
Agree with Dan Wok's comment- this is a top 5 T&H video for me. I passed on a 2-tone linen dial DJ a month back and was kicking myself as I watched this. Also like some of the educational pieces woven into this vid (bezel lesson). Would love a deep dive video on the differences in DJ references someday. Thanks for this one! Also, just got my GG shirt and it rocks!
Hey. Enjoyed the video. The DJ has been my favorite watch as well since I was a young kid (like 7). So I totally agree with you about this watch. My father had a engine-turn bezel tapestry dial (cream color) DJ that is about 1985-87. I now have it. But always waiting for the day I could purchase my own, in 2016 I bought a 116234 Silver dial Jubilee fluted. You are right about there are so many options that it is hard to choose the one for you. This is my grail and now I feel at piece, I even have quenched the desire for impulse buys. This will always be my favorite watch because it means so much to me watching it on the wrist of my dad. Great video and taste in a watch.
Enjoyed your video very much. What brand of strap is the light tanned dial Rolex have on it? I have a 1958 Rolex Submariner no date all original except for a Rolex stap which is dated from 1969.
I have three Rolex Datejusts (Rolesor, WG, SS). My other Rolex is the Explorer 1 (114270). I love them all, over 30 years, I never had a problem with my "livery" of Rolexes.. I own a Reverso, (?) Omegas, a Nomos, Hamilton, an TH Autavia, etc... YOU are correct! The Datejust is a bulletproof watch whether vintage or new.
Hello Christian, first of all I agree with Dan Wok´s statement. Best video because you slowed down pace. Keep in mind that you have follower who are not native english speaker. Mentioning the two models in minute 04:12 and 04:13 with the different type of hands; what are their references? Can you mention also the references for models with the engine turned steel bezel. Thank you
I was worried about a 1974 datejust I recently purchased since it's off around 2 seconds a day. My step father had a beauty that was off 1 or 2 seconds a month. I'm guessing it was newer.
Well done, well said. One thing about the classic vintage, I sometimes wonder why it's sacrilege to relume, because that would be restoring its functionality, indistinct from restoring the movement after a few decades. Another thing is that from what I hear, a Rolex DJ new will only have 20 years of solid water resistance. I wish it was more.
That blue dial is mesmerizing Christian! Great review on both elegant time pieces! Up until subscribing to your channel, I had never given the Rolex Day Date or Datejust models a second look. My Rolex preferences are: Submariners, sans date complication, Explorer I, Air King, newest iteration. I appreciate you reviewing the particular models and changing my viewpoint on these models. The blue dials are by far the most beautiful, with the black dial running a close second! Great Job on the vlogs! 👏 What is your opinion of the Tudor variations of these Rolex models? Due to MY Military background and that of the Tudor, as well as the justification and price point for Tudor's inception, that is my preference. I would like your personal opinion of the brand and insight as well. Cheers!
One of these days I'll need to contact you Christian about the purchase of the vintage DateJust...Trying to decide between the Speedy or the DateJust at the moment.
So happy that you finally made a datejust video, hence it being my next buy. When I'm ready, I will see what you have in the shop!!! What are your thoughts on the Omega constellation pie pans???
how often do you usually find a datejust to sell on your site? always stalking the theo&harris site for one but i usually find them on other vintage dealer sites
R Lorenzo hey man! Honestly, most of our DJ's sell before they even hit the site. We hold them to such a high level of quality that they're immediately snatched up. But feel free to shoot us an email at info@theoandharris.com And I'll be sure to help you get dibs!!
And owning a couple gifted watches and my first automatic watch a seiko 5 diver, would you say theres more value in a 1601 rolex or another watch id really like, a nice lightly used speedmaster?
you said waterproof 😂 i purposely bought a watch from this era to get a "waterproof" timepiece knowing it's a misnomer and literally not possible hahahah. thank you as always, you are part of my watch obsession getting started x
With the DJ late 1977 saw the change to the 3135 upgrading from the 1570. This allows for better date setting and a higher frequency. (theoretically, this makes for better accuracy. Some say high beat rate creates more wear so will need to be serviced more often but that could an urban myth. I do not know. If you Like the 34m then I would potentially look at an Air King too later models. 14010 with an Engine turned bezel I think looks the Balls (like a mini explorer)
Do you ship watches to Australia? I love your videos and like how passionate you are with vintage pieces. I have yet owned any vintage watches but I have started to grow to like them and would like to buy one soon!
I agree with you on the size being perfect. Personally, I wear watches that are 38-42mm but recently I am finding the size of the vintage watches you wear to be very classy. Don't get me started on those beautiful straps. Just a small tip, the photo you kept was so annoying. It was cutting half of your face! Decrease its size or remove it. There is no need to keep it all the time, this has become recurrent in your recent videos.
Nice video! I'm looking to get started collecting Rolex's. I love the timeless design. I plan on buying a circa 1970's Date or Datejust w/blue face and using one of the two bands you show in your video. Really looks sharp and you can get into it for under 3K. My favorite is the current 40mm yachtmaster w/the blue face. I wish they made that in 37mm like the Rhodium. I have a small wrist.
Rex Apis Haha yeah! The content is always interesting with great opinions so I really wanted to watch T&H videos but I couldn't sit thru the so-called maniac ranting at times! This video is just perfect. Keep it up!
if i would have to compare this watch to humans, i'd say it is the quiet guy who is always pretty calm and does not say much, but is a extremely cool guy if you talk to him
kingofkings1712 much like the men and women who wear them
You are wise
You can tell that this episode came straight from the heart
Devil's Kiss thank you so much for watching!!
No pretentiousness, just your average guy talking about the watch that he loves so damn much. Best video ever.
Seven years after this was posted and just got my 1984 16030 and immediately threw it on a strap.
Probably your best video. Professional, slower pace and more mature. You'll get more subs doing it with this in mind!
Dan Wok
'Still needs to be slower, it feels rushed..
Dan Wok thank you so much!! And I promise to work to slow down!!
Dan Wok iii
I could probably listen to you talking about Datejusts indefinitely. It's such a versatile and beautiful watch. I'm on the hunt for my first rolex personally (and first luxury watch, for my 30th birthday...) , A 2-Tone 1601 with gold hands and deep blue dial. Just found one...

I had an image of a 40/50 something rich white dude hobby, and it's much more than that, thanks to you and other young guys on the Internet.
Cheers!
Florent Degletagne id also recommended teddy baldasarre for a younger guy
36mm DJ is the perfect watch indeed
Cedar Canoe thank you for watching!!
I became obsessed with Rolex DJ watching the TGV review, I bought my last year and hardly wear my other Rolex watches. The versatility of DJ is legendary and watching your video reinforces the whole idea why I adore Datejust. Nice vid.
So excited to see another Datejust video. THANK YOU!
I've finally decided on a 16234. What's your thoughts on that ref?
A nice and sympathetic video about Rolex Datejust. I think you've captured what's the essence of Datejust. It's a Rolex and therefore not quite cheap (even the vintage models), but the Datejust is at the same time quite discreet without seeming boring. OMG. You suggested a DJ on a nato. That's all the validation I needed! I have a purple nato to pair with my two-toned, and I'm busting it out.
Christian, because of your heartfelt commentary for these watches, I just purchased a 1986 16030 and absolutely love it! I've worn it with suits and jeans, and you're right...it's perfect for any occasion!! Thank you for being so honest and sharing your obvious passion for watches! Best, Keith
Now I am dying for another just. They are so elegant and classy. Great energy and passion in this episode
I never wanted a Rolex till I watched this video love the passion
Great video Christian, the Datejust is also my favourite watch. You should do a video guide to Vintage Rolex Datejust someday
Ricardo Reis great idea!! Thank you so much for watching!!
I've watched several videos of yours. I love Vintage watches but learning and I love Rolex. This video pushed me over the edge and I now know I want a 1974 Vintage Datejust and that's what I will wear with a strap. Dude this video is incredible!! I mean it.

Hello! How much did you pay for it 4 years ago?
@@thelexyshow about $3000
Tough catching up on old videos. I absolutely love the blue Rolex dial with the leather strap😍
Lovely summary. I love them too
This has convinced me to make my first big vintage purchase a datejust. without a doubt.
I totally fell in love with your vintage blue Datejust! I can’t wait to buy one from you some day! Just need to save a little more scratch!
I have a 1967 white dial Datejust on a £13 leather strap. It looks great, keeps superb time and is a daily wearer. Perfect size for my skinny wrist too.
beautiful piece
Excellent presentation. You conveyed your passion very well.
Great points. Casual / Dressy / Sporty. I agree this is a true versatile timepiece. In fact, after owning a number of other Rolex references, today my only Rolex in my collections is a 16253 (two-tone, Thunderbird). It fits most situations when wearing it with the right band. Cheers.
These are perfect under the radar watches. You can wear them with the watch case on the inside of your wrist.
This video actually did make me fall in love a lil more with the Datejust
christian i totally agree to what you express in this video mine is a ref 16013 two tone fluted bezel 18 gold dial and jubilee bracelet from 1984 running just 6 s slow/ day and its a passion you discover when you wear them
I've seen that datejust with that fantastic lilac blue in another video of yours, and I believe I told you then as I am telling you now.. that is a gorgeous datejust.. Love it..
A vintage Datejust does look awesome with a distressed leather strap. Understated. Dignified. Class.
I have been looking forward to this video for ages. Great insight
Very true, either you love a classic or prefer a modern watch. Hate it when someone compares a vintage to a modern quality. Doesnt make sense. Think about the time these pieces were made, and be able to stand out today. Simply amazing.

Has the 100m WR held up?
6:02 - ah, the old times when a vintage Datejust could be bought with 3k dollars... Now after 5 years its almost double the price!
Just got a fully high grade refurbished late '60's 1601 on alligator last Saturday. Been wearing it every evening since. As I'm an ex-pro watchmaker, I immediately popped it open to admire the 1575. Christian: nicely done, good points. If one were to get one vintage watch to actually wear day in day out they should see video 123!!
Awesome video Christian! My father recently gave me his Rolex vintage DJ with white gold fluted bezel on jubilee. The bracelet is too small and he cannot find the extra links so I've put it on nylon nato for now but I do intend to find a nice leather nato in the near future. I wear a vintage datejust 16014 everyday. And it’s just a good watch
This is Christian’s best video of all time. I can never rewatch this video enough times.
brillant ! I agree and like your expressiv way of explaining us your love for those marvelous DateJusts!

I've been wearing the little brother to the datejust, the date.
GuyPersonLol a beautiful watcg!!
I have a Rolex Date with a grey sunburst dial, smooth bezel, and a 34mm case. Definitely my favorite dress watch!
Chris Hansen incredibly good watch!!
Well said. I couldn't agree more. This watch is just so darn versatile. I appreciate mine more every day.
azhawk516 so glad you're loving it, buddy!!
One of my favorite vids so far! I will own on of these one day. Hopefully soon!
Love your Rolex Datejust videos keep it up!
I would love to hear your opinion on day dates, and why you prefer the date just.
Do you still recommend a vintage date just after 4 years?
love the video...where did you get your glasses? lol
I need the blue DJ. What is the exact reference for that color? Thank you
Enjoyed your video very much.

Where did you get these straps??😍
The DJ is my grail watch. Until then, I'm wearing my Seiko SARB035, which I absolutely love.
both great watches in different ways!!
Sarb 035 is stunning!
Well done, well said. One thing about the classic vintage, I sometimes wonder why it's sacrilege to relume, because that would be restoring its functionality, indistinct from restoring the movement after a few decades.

Great vid mate. Picking up my 1974 1601 on Saturday - can't wait! 👊🏻
Lars Bohinen enjoy it!!
Great video Christian ! Thanks for sharing !
Excellent video. Thank you for posting.
Thank you for watching!
Your Rolex with the blue dial looks amazing! I think I'm going to buy one of these.
Love this watch and this video!
Thanks!
Do you feel the same about 34mm Tudor Oysterdates?
not exactly the same but I do love them!
Hi Christian, nice video. How is the accuracy of the watch?
// Datejust fan from Sweden
One of these days I'll need to contact you Christian about the purchase of the vintage DateJust...Trying to decide between the Speedy or the DateJust at the moment.
A fine piece. This watch is a one watch collection.
Redskins Pride WGIL i absolutely agree!!
Is it possible to remove the cyclops on the day-date or date-just or would you have to swap the whole glass crystal?
What colour is the other datejust is it silver it doesnt quite look silver
Well, now I'm on the hunt for a Datejust ;)
So happy that you finally made a datejust video, hence it being my next buy. When I'm ready, I will see what you have in the shop!!! What are your thoughts on the Omega constellation pie pans???
What do you think of he turn-o-graph "thunderbird" ? Seems a nice Rolex as well. Can they be had in a larger case though? Just subbed as well ..
Did you recently remove the cyclops from your blue dj?
I own many different watches, but I don't break into sweat trying to decide which watch I'm going to wear with my chosen outfit.
I would love to purchase the band you have on your blue face date just. Im on the Jean Rousseau website. Do you know which you ordered? Its so nice.
Love your passion, my man!
What's the strap on both watches?
how often do you usually find a datejust to sell on your site? always stalking the theo&harris site for one but i usually find them on other vintage dealer sites
R Lorenzo hey man! Honestly, most of our DJ's sell before they even hit the site. We hold them to such a high level of quality that they're immediately snatched up. But feel free to shoot us an email at info@theoandharris.com
And I'll be sure to help you get dibs!!
Is that the logo of Philippine Airlines in your Tudor watch??
What camera setup do you use?
love the video and am looking for a vintage 1601 - other than watchrecon and chrono24 what sites would you suggest?
And owning a couple gifted watches and my first automatic watch a seiko 5 diver, would you say theres more value in a 1601 rolex or another watch id really like, a nice lightly used speedmaster?
you said waterproof 😂 i purposely bought a watch from this era to get a "waterproof" timepiece knowing it's a misnomer and literally not possible hahahah. thank you as always, you are part of my watch obsession getting started x
Hey Christian, whats the price nowadays for a vintage Rolex 1601 1603. Should it be below 4.000 Euro? Thanks
What do you think about DateJust with roman numerals for indices? I have one and love it, but it looks a bit too formal for casual wear.
The Tudor on the intro has the Philippine Airlines logo on it.
Mark T Mabuhay 🇵🇭
just wanted to say - great video! Really love the datejust and OP date. Is there a particular model/ movement you would recommend?
With the DJ late 1977 saw the change to the 3135 upgrading from the 1570. This allows for better date setting and a higher frequency. (theoretically, this makes for better accuracy. Some say high beat rate creates more wear so will need to be serviced more often but that could an urban myth. I do not know. If you Like the 34m then I would potentially look at an Air King too later models. 14010 with an Engine turned bezel I think looks the Balls (like a mini explorer)
Hi there, do you recon papers are important when picking up a vintage datejust?
nice, positive review
F*** me dead! You know how to sell a DJ!
What is your wrist size? I want to make sure it looks elegant on my 7 inch wrist. Thank you for the review
This video sealed the deal on my Datejust purchase and asking you to source the watch for me.
I will be emailing you soon. Thank you.
I have a small wrist.
great video, the audio is good. i like that you are a little more calm and collected as compared to your other videos makes watching enjoyable.
deroh
This is still a bit manic towards the start and middle though...the pace at the end is good..
Rex Apis Haha yeah! The content is always interesting with great opinions so I really wanted to watch T&H videos but I couldn't sit thru the so-called maniac ranting at times! This video is just perfect. Keep it up!
Are they always waterproof, even so... vintage?
Hi there. Is the one with the blue dial available for purchase? Please message me. Thanks
