    I'm ashamed to say that for the past year I undervalued Jim's perspective on the industry simply reducing it as edgy content. There was a wall of text following the last sentence and I felt I had to delete it because it was turning into a small article. The point was it took a year for me to understand what motivates him, empathize with the work, and appreciate his importance as a person. For the sake of brevity, thank god for Jim.

      I subbed to him 6-7 years ago I think, and then promptly unsubbed to him, but almost immediately was hit with other gaming news sources referencing him and needed to check back, and actually "got" him. The sarcasm and hyperbole flow fast and thick with Jim, and is the armor you must get through to see the absolutely lovely man behind it. He's been my fav TH-camr ever since.

    Saw another video on this and all I could think was 'seems like Alice: Madness Returns without the majority of the features.' That said, minimalism can be fine, even great, but they have to absolutely nail the few mechanics they do have.

      Alice: Madness Returns was a masterpiece, overlooked because it was the follow-up to McGee's Alice and because it was developed by a chinese studio (and we all know that chinese = bad, right?) This is just a feminist forced diversity developer product (think they had an imposed "at least" 50% of the people working on it must be females, you could see from the video presenting the game at E3, focused more on the people working on the game than the actual game itself...) And, of course, it must have been EA publishing it because we all know how much EA loves virtue signaling, diversity and inclusion and... i'm gonna puke... And then they are wondering why people hate them because they're... EA

      I'm of a slightly different mind on this: while I don't need these kinds of games to have thick juicy layers of mechanics to the point of obtuse maximalism, I'd rather they have a bit more to them than what they usually go with. In terms of the metaphors for dealing with mental illness, there are other ways you can go about it other than running away from the problems and avoiding them. In fact, running away from them seems like the WORST way you could address dealing with them, like saying "if you just ignore the bullies they'll go away eventually" and ending up hanged in the boy's toilets.
      Combatting them is one ludic metaphor that could work, though it'd probably need to be more clever than just bashing them. Puzzles and deduction could also work for metaphorically working through one's issues, along with interacting with other characters in your world and getting them to understand you, contributing to making the final confrontation easier through unwrapping the root of the problem and the nature of its symptoms.
      That's probably how I'd go about making a game about dealing with mental illness: try to figure out what the cause is, finding others to support you in your plight, work out how to weaken the monster that's eating away at you, and THEN engage in a final bossfight against the manifestation of your problems, whether that be using what you've learned in order to exploit the boss's weaknesses, or engaging in a battle of wits to wear down its influence over you.

    I think making a game where "mental health" is the primary theme is actually pretty vague and lends itself to either an extremely direct or extremely disorganized premise and story. I think there are a number of games that include mental health themes, but it's not the ONLY theme. For example, the Persona series includes many mental health themes that are incorporated into the gameplay (i.e., when a person confronts the dark side of themselves and accepts it, they get stronger and have more abilities), but the games are also about other things and have decent gameplay. Celeste has a similar gameplay message about mental health (i.e., that you get stronger as you accept yourself) and has straightforward gameplay, but the gameplay mechanics and levels are very well made.
    I think people are more than their mental illnesses, and I think games should be about more than just mental illness. There has to be something else there to supplement it or give context to it. All of that said, if a game can help someone and/or decrease the stigma of mental illness, I view it as a net positive.

    • @doomslayer163

    It goes back to what you said about art games and Dear Esther: They're becoming ordinary.
    It's like horror games that play out from the perspective of a child or are themed around corruption of childhood innocence. A-la, yes it's a good idea. And everyone else agrees, so you're going to need a little more than that.

    Jimpression summary. What the game does, it does decently. Very pretty aesthetically but with some noticeable shortcuts. Gameplay is pretty phoned in, don't expect it to blow your mind, but it's good enough. Story is a bit too much on the nose but is done well enough. A decent game that Jim wants to like more than he actually does.

    Jason Lives is the Friday the 13th sequel where the series went full camp. Not only does it have that opening sequence but also The Man Behind the Mask by Alice Cooper playing, just in case anyone was confused that this was not going to be a completely serious affair. Unfortunately that all led to Jason Takes Manhattan where it went way too camp.

    *Spoilers I guess*
    Feeling like you have to carry people's burdens but being unable to realize how to help yourself is a huge thing with me, and the game's presentation of it really got to me. I find the upfront presentation of the monsters actually really refreshing. I'm sick of games relying purely on symbolism, often to the point that you can lose track of the subject matter. Sea of Solitude was a pretty straightforward story about a girl trying to help her family and get through grief and loneliness, herself. And I don't see anything wrong with that - pure symbolism isn't inherently better, and a certain level of predictability isn't bad either. Maybe in a long spanning game it would be, but for the 5-ish hours this game took up? It worked really well, imo. You got the point, but still got to experience it enough to give it depth.
    As a side note, I had no trouble with the controls. Some things were wonky, like the game deciding where physics were for certain platforms, but none of it got in the way of playing. I didn't notice Kay's momentum being off. Maybe they patched it already, who knows. Or maybe I'm just used to wonky controls cuz all my favorite games seem to have them. (I'm a Fumito Ueda nerd.)

    Every (indie) game where it's a metaphor for a mental health is exactly the same thing. They're all a walking simulator with metaphorical monsters preventing you from doing basic actions, while a narrator narrating the message to you that [insert mental health here] is preventing you, the player, from doing these basic actions, while emotional music is screaming at the player with the lyrics "FEEL SAD! FEEL SAD! DON'T YOU FEEL SAD NOW!? COME ON, FEEL SAD!"

      @@dreamerabe I find it less distracting for heavy themes in film/TV simply because I can somewhat divorce myself from it. A video game, by design, has you paying closer attention because your own actions are required to progress. I mean, it's difficult for me to focus on whatever theme a game is trying to drive home because I'm more focused on the aspect of playing the actual game.

    I really liked Jim’s thoughts on this one. Being neuroatypical and having a less than stellar psychological profile this game seems to be something I would make, but not play after finishing it. That is I’d pour my heart out to try to exorcise - if you will, in the case of making such a personal game be a cathartic experience - my ”dämons” (a semantic word play by director Ingmar Bergman to replace e with ä in ”demon” to denote a different interpretation of it), but I wouldn’t want to play after its completion. If that makes any sense.
    I remember an interview with Nick Cave (around the release of his ”Nocturama” album) where he was asked how he feels about his older material. He quoted an interview with Thom Yorke where he was asked the same thing and his wife’s advice was ”be proud of your accomplishments, but don’t look back and dwell on them”. I’m paraphrasing. So it’s a difficult situation for artists. To have to revisit old wounds yet be able to distance themselves from the emotional implications.

    I would have been sold on this game were it in literally any genre other than 'adventure' which is basically the genre developers shoot for when they have a really interesting setting but can't be arsed to aim higher than that.

    • @thisiskitta
      @thisiskitta 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Wrongspeak Auditor i see what you’re saying but I gotta disagree on the grounds that it’s because they’re not aiming high enough that adventure in this context falls flat. Their puzzling and platforming is subpar but that is not the fault of the genre. It’s more that these games are little more than an interactive story and that’s a shame. I’m not one to hate on so-called walking simulator mind you but that the vast majority of these indie games that have something to say are not actually exploring gameplay enough and when you become one amongst many that lack of expansive gameplay is detrimental in my opinion.

    • @ManoredRed
      @ManoredRed 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It does have a certain catch-all quality to it nowadays. "Adventure" was never a very strongly defined genre, but in older times you could generally expect a decent contextual puzzle game out of the tag. Nowadays games with barely any gameplay have taking a liking to that tag, rendering it mostly useless.

    • @DanVzare
      @DanVzare 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There used to be a time when "adventure" games, meant anything with obscure inventory object puzzles. Maniac Mansion, King's Quest, Day of the Tentacle, Broken Sword, ect. Nowadays, "adventure" games, are the "misc" category, with the original "adventure" games being relegated to the "point and click adventure" category.
      I don't like it, but what can you do.

    • @ouroldhouse3674
      @ouroldhouse3674 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends though. Nowadays adventure game can basically just mean no combat, according to some people. Whereas, some of my all time favourite games are adventure games e.g Broken Sword, Monkey Island. "Point & click" adventures like that, are awesome.
      Personally, I'd call this a platformer (as basic as the "platforming" is).

    • @ManoredRed
      @ManoredRed 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ouroldhouse3674 If I had to classify it, I would go with puzzle/platformer, since it has elements of both genres. However, it seems quite light on both. This creates the problem of how to classify something when it technically belongs to genre X but its so light on genre X, you don't want to give people the impression it has a lot of X on it. Just adding "walking simulator" to that genre description seems kinda rude =)

  • @notpointed
    @notpointed 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The main criticism seems to be "okay, serviceable, but it's another one". And I think for a game about mental health that's not a bad criticism.
    Mental health is a problem for many people so having many different games about it means there's a higher chance one of the many games will speak to any given player.
    We should always be critical of all video games, no matter the subject matter. If "That Dragon, Cancer" had a section that was essentially a retread of the 2007 PS2 game "An American Tail: Fievel Goes West" then it would deserve to be called out for it.

The biggest issue as far as story goes is that it missed an opportunity to explore more ideas during certain areas of the plot. Best section was definitely the part concerning the parents.
