This movie is so special to me. The magic in Matilda wasn't her super powers but her inner strength. Everyone deserves a Ms. Honey in their life. They were the sweet light at the end of the tunnel. So precious it makes me cry.

Something great we have to appreciate is how Trunchbull isn't a dumb brute. Like, she's smart enough to understand someone took her chocolates, she can understand who scammed her and hoe much power she has over the children of the school. She isn't just some easily manipulated villain, she is a threat.

I like the way she says “whose in my house” and starts to stomp up the stairs. Also how just by noticing something small like the lid misplaced on the chocolate box and the smell right away she knows someone is there. Just a great movie overall, proud to be a 90s kid and growing up with these great movies.
In all honesty if you lived alone for most of your life and one day you noticed something that was outta place you'd put 2 and 2 together. Its possible she also smelt Miss Honeys Perfume fragrance aswell.

I love how they established that Trunchbull was probably a murderer before this anxiety-inducing scene. It’s like if they were caught, literally ANYTHING horrible could have happened. 😮
She probably would have killed them right then and there considering she was willing to toss a girl far away in something that probably would have killed her or seriously injured her.
Looking back on it now, I have a feeling she killed Miss Honey’s parents.

So I think when she told her backstory to Matilda, later on she realized she was lied to and Mrs Trunchbull killed her parents even if it wasn’t stated explicitly in the film, it shows how much anxiety Miss Honey has behind her kind heart and how cruel Mrs Trunchbull on the other hand was.

When I was a kid, this was terrifying. Now, as an adult, it still scares me, but the Trunchabull's exclamations always have me cracking up, laughing. "Crush the little weasel!"
and "I'm gonna take that no-good jalappa you sold me and shove it up your BAZOOKA!"

I also laugh at the part when the Trunch is buying a car from Matilda's Dad. And she says, "They're all mistakes, children. Filthy, nasty things. Glad I never was one." I didn't catch it when I was little, but, now, when I watch it, it always makes me laugh.
That part when she says “Some rats are gonna die today!” gives me the feeling of fear.

What blows my mind is that the overall duration of this scene only comes to just under 10 minutes. This whole entry-and-escape sequence felt like at least 30 watching it as a kid! Props to Danny DeVito, Pam Ferris & the rest of the team for bringing such a masterpiece to life !! Still gets my heart racing 25+ years on

Pam Farris should’ve been nominated for an Oscar for her incredible performance which combines ferociousness and funniness, “Matilda” 1996 the first movie I’ve ever watched at a movie theater and is honestly still one of the best movies of all time just reminds me of how dumb down mainstream modern children/family movies has become.
I forget how much the escape sequence scared the *living heck* out of me as a kid! Credit to Pam Ferris for deserving such menace to her character, as well as David Newman's music and Danny DeVito's direction.

This film always impresses me with how mature it is. It may be a children’s film, but the way it handles is subject matter does so in a way that is not condescending, and assumes a great level of emotional intelligence in its audience.
It holds up now that I’m an adult too and I remember watching it with my mum too(who is no longer with me) and how she also enjoyed it.
This scene alone, should be an example to other film makers. It is intense and perfectly paced. The performances really blow me away. It will always be a favourite of mine and a prime example of how you shouldn’t condescend to children to give them an enjoyable film experience.
The one and only Mr Danny Devito directed this he didn't have to go this hard but he did

Trunchbull is such an awesome villain. I love that she’s an Olympian, psychotic, smart enough to run her own school, and is also a confirmed murderer who stole an entire wealthy estate from a man’s daughter.
The performance from Pam Ferris and Danny Devito’s direction makes her hilarious, but somehow the hilarity comes from the fact that she’s so over-the-top scary and evil it goes beyond reality. It’s hard to make a villain intimidating and funny at the same time without sacrificing one for the other at certain points.
But even as she chases Matilda, the way she sniffs like a blood hound and brings the chandelier down from her sheer weight is uproarious.
When Trunchbull shouted 'Wormwood', I bet Matilda thought she was talking to her.

This scene was probably so much fun to film. I hope for Pam Ferris’s sake it didn’t take too many takes to film because of the suit she wore to make her embody the Trunchbull was very warm and she said in an interview a little over a year after she finished filming the movie most days in LA it was over 100 degrees.
If it had actually been over 100 degrees, she would have had severe burns. Boiling water is 100 degrees. So what she said is hardly true.

The shots where Trunchbull has a look like she seems like she busted Matilda and Honey but actually takes heed of something else are so brilliant. It does an amazing job of keeping the tension at an all-time high, and that sigh of relief you let out when she sees something that's not them is unmatched.

She was a demon, as soon as Jenny’s father was out of the house, she became a holy terror, that was the beginning of starting to show how horrible of a monster Agatha Trunchbull was. But when Magnus put in an appearance she acted differently

You're correct about the v8. The smallest motor offered in that car would have been the 401 C.I.
The biggest would have been a 455, which was (I believe) the second biggest engine built by GM at the time, second only to the Cadillac 472
Most of the weight is on the front because the Buick is front wheel drive so she's deadlifting a fraction of the car's weight. Still impossible for any woman IRL.

Well, Matilda and Miss Honey should not have entered the house in the first place, because Trunchbull can come in the house anytime and catch them. That is the point.
It might have been a way to keep Miss Honey from sneaking out when she lived there. The door was even boarded up!

Rightly so, Danny Devito gets a lot of credit for this film but huge credit to Pam Ferris. You can see the determination to act so well, simply by seeing how much she lives the role, I mean look at her sweat! She didn't have to scream so loud or shout so loud. Got a sneaking suspicion that the 'Tally-Ho!!!' jump was her idea!
This scene is scary, this scene is the scariest part in the whole movie. The Trunchbull is trying to find the people who are inside her house and Matilda and Miss Honey are trying to save themselves, that is really scary. However, there is something strange I have noticed. In this scene of the movie, Matilda does not use any of her superpowers, she only uses her inner strength.

Even if Miss Trunchbull is the villain, I think she is funny, especially when she gets frustrated with many things. Her character is the perfect persona of an English witch, who is clever and likes to cackle. She might smile and say to a boy or a girl in a cackling voice, "Come to me, my pretty! Heh-heh-heh!"
