plagal. such a good word for the most climatic sections of the song, the incompleteness of using the 4th instead of using the 5th to mark it as holy but also imperfect, weaker, less ideal. (i've loved dabbling in lydian stuff and in ear training, i find it weird that 4ths feel better to me than 5ths)

38:27 Totally agree!! The 6/8 time certainly gives it a lot of opportunity for power moves (for lack of an actual term), but Josh Billy and Maynard really nailed the last third of the song with how they pass around and augment the wave of energy they're riding. I don't like making tool and apc comparisons but even though it is a much shorter ending and song, this gets me the same way the ending of lateralus does, just much more compact.

@15:06 The term is rhotic (pronounced R sounds) vs nonrhotic (soft R sounds). Maynard is a rhotic singer; not sure I've ever heard him sing or talk nonrhotically.
There is a wonderful video series that Wired has on TH-cam where Erik Singer (a dialect coach) goes over accents across the US - worth a watch on its own, but definitely helps as a musician if you want to expand your vocab for vocal sounds :)

Love it Ixi! I think the overprounouced “R” (nevorrr) sound is called Rhotic accent. He leans into his rhotic accent sometimes. Also fun fact, or so I’ve heard, old British / English people spoke with rhotic R’s for most of history then shed the rhotic r only relatively recently.

    • @ralphenstein9105
      @ralphenstein9105 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not sure about that fun fact. I was going to say that the loss of the Rhotic R sound could have been as a result of one of the many invasions in history, but I think even without any invasions, most English people today would sound something like Welsh or Scottish people do, and neither of those pronounce R sounds like that. I suppose the ones from around the South West of England might, judging from West Country accents.

It's funny, when you mentioned how the "He did it all for you" sounded holy, I immediately realized it sounded like a plagal cadence. Sure enough, you went on to talk about 4 to 3 and "amen." I always thought that line had a different feel from other parts of the song, but couldn't articulate why.
Your videos are the reason I even know what a plagal cadence is!
Seriously, the way you present song breakdowns, inclusive of your singing and piano work, has been a tremendous help for me in recognizing intervals (both sequentially in melodies and simultaneously in harmonies).

    19:13
That part totally sounds like holy music to me too. I'm not musically trained, just been dragged to too many churches as a child.
I'd say there's a 95+% (I'm tempted to say 100%) chance this indeed was meant as a mockery. As if Maynard had an inner dialogue with his paralyzed mother, "Yes mom, of course, he (God) did it all for you" said in a sarcastic tone, to mimic the way things are often phrased at the church. There's one line of the lyrics where it's actually "he did this TO you", pretty much as a scream, a wakeup call. "I'll tell you what, he did this TO you mom, not for you. He did not do you a favor X years ago!"
This was a very angry Maynard. One way to express that anger is to scream, which he does. Another way is to be hyper cynical, which that part of the song is. "He did it all for you" used this way is the craft of a mean, angry and genius writer. Those words are loaded.

Referring back to my comment from Part 1, talking about Rose, specifically. For me, this is that kind of song... the way you say that Rose might be your favorite APC song (or did you simply say favorite, regardless of artist? Bold statement either way)... Judith destroys me. When I say that it destroys me, I mean it destroys me with overwhelming emotion. I am not a spiritual person, but if I were, listening to this song would be a spiritually ecstatic experience. Again, like with Rose, there are always tears. I cry. A lot.
Something that I find amusing... there is a running joke among some APC fans, regarding Paz tying her hair during the video. You play it two or three times, I think, but the first time is around 28:17 in this video. People have an appreciation that might just border on obsession with the action, that honestly feels similar to the way women can be objectified in society... it bothered me at first... but when I'm honest with myself, I feel it too. It's not an "attraction" based on some carnal sensation, but rather, there is a feeling of competence, even mastery when I see that part.
What? Someone tying their hair up? Really? Perhaps it's because as a man who never had hair that long, this action is simply not in my vocabulary. But when I scratch under the surface, it seems that it's far more than that. The action, for me, draws attention to her mastery as a bass player as well. "Yeah, we don't need to take a break. I'll just adjust my hair while playing one of the greatest songs of all time, performing at a high level. I got this." But again, more than that, for me, it highlights the mastery that surrounds her. Everyone is performing at a high level. Everyone here is one of the best at what they do. This song is one of the best examples of it's type, in my opinion. The level of "elite" on display here is staggering, and for some silly, ridiculous reason, Paz tying her hair at that very moment symbolizes all of that. It's silly, but emotions don't make sense, and this is a completely emotional response.
Finally, I love that you mention the moment when Billy is harmonizing with Maynard, and slides up to the 4th. I have always delighted in that moment of the song, so to hear you acknowledge it was kinda special. Also, around that moment in the video (I think, I didn't go back to double check) Paz appears to also be singing. In fact, several times during the video Paz is shown singing along. You didn't mention this in your commentary. That made me wonder... I had always thought Paz was sliding up to the 4th there, because of watching the video. I know that Billy was screaming, and singing, and harmonizing, but I never knew which parts were him, and which were her.
Now that you you played that part closely, after saying it was Billy, I agree, it absolutely sounds like Billy's voice. I was wrong, no doubt. But here is the question that I've been leading up to... do you happen to know (based on the tracks you have access to, your research, your ear) if any of Paz's vocals were actually used in the studio version of the song? Maybe she was just singing in the video, but not in the audio? Maybe it was recorded, but then they didn't use it? My hearing is horrible in mid-range. Even though I was a singer for years, I have always had difficulty recognizing lyrics, as well as other details in recorded vocals. I'm really curious and thought I'd ask.
As always, grateful for what you do. Please keep doing it. Thank you very, very much.
*Edit* Whoops, lots of people already commented on some of the things I discussed here. I try not to "me too" on these sorts of things, especially with so many words... but honestly, I'm so passionate about this it's really a #sorrynotsorry kinda thing. :)

28:24 the “post-chorus” high-note riff/solo sounds like it’s played through a Whammy Pedal, which takes the guitar tone artificially up an octave… it’s really noticeable as it evolves into the bit playing behind Maynard when he comes back in 2:00 in to the song… that high shrill filter is the Whammy.

Absolutely killer breakdown! I really enjoyed it! There's only one part I don't think you got right. I'm pretty sure it's all Maynard that you're hearing on vocals. I know in the video it looks like Billy is singing, but remember, you're hearing the studio version. The video is probably taken from a pre-tour rehearsal. When they play it live Billy is singing some parts, but in the studio version I'm pretty sure it's all Maynard on all vocal melodies and harmonies. Listen to the timbre of the voice. Does it sound like two vocalists? It sounds like one to me. Other than that, absolutely great work, both in breakdown and video presentation! Thanks! Looking forward to the analysis of the rest of the songs.

Ha, I told you last time doing J, O, and 3L in one episode will be a challenge 😁
Wonderful deep dive not only on the technical and interpretative level but also through seeing how much you enjoy it. Resonates with how I feel about this particular song and many others that you covered and will cover in the future!
    A-fucking-men! 🤘🏻

34:48 hearing this on piano reminded me of something, but I wasn't entirely sure what. After about a minute of searching I realized it really reminds me of the very beginning of Regina Spektor's song End Of Thought. Guess that explains why I love Regina alongside much heavier artists like A Perfect Circle

I absolutely love every bit of the geeking out over this absolute masterpiece of a song. When you said you just / died / again, I'm like HON I'm in a perpetual state of some part of dying from start to finish. It's just so good!! PS, what's your opinion on the Renholder remix version of this?

This is probably one of the best song analyses I've ever seen. The level of detail and prior research, even finding and including Billy's breakdown of the song is something i haven't seen others do. This was really insightful and your passion for doing these vids is so great to watch!

I love the guitar work on this song.
Also, modal mixture is so cool.
Ps. I hear the “flip” in a lot of Japanese folk music.
It’s a very cool vocal thing.

Love these insights as well as your fantastic taste in amazing music (Yep, I'm a proud Gen X)!!! Also your visceral excitement is contagious and knowledgeable, clear, concise break down of music is so easily understood and absorbed! Legendary! Right up there with the likes of Rick Beato IMO, but with the added bonus of being much prettier than Rick! Much gratitude, keep up the great work

To me this is a companion piece for 10,000 days but the other side of the coin. That was "You're the only one who should get their wings to heaven because you believed devoutly" and this is "how can you believe in something that would do this to you". If you know someone with a ps5 (don't know if it's on xbox or pc) there is a radiohead kid a mnesia interactive art/game that has the music from the album.
