Thanks for the video, but I just did this and found I only needed to unscrew the 3 Torx screws and lift the air box up. It opens enough to slide the old filter out and the new one in. Don't need to take anything else apart. Cheers.
Very proffesional, removing complete filter and checking its condition, cleaning and then returning it, reminds me of Rolls Royce / Bentley mechanics from back in the eighties when all work was removed, assessed and remedial work carried out on the bench before refitting.
It takes extra time and of course things can be done a lot faster. But I really enjoy removing the components and using all the special tools for these cars. Glad to see someone who enjoys the process.
Brilliant video unlike some people i have read I followed every step! It is essential to do this because if you don't remove the debris from the box then the extra sucking power because of the new filter will vacuum that debris straight onto the back of the new clean filter and clog it. My uk car had a full service history 49k miles still had factory fitted air filter. Service schedule is 40-60k replace if necessary! Believe me it is always necessary! I had an emission fault light on dash (must have been a MAF fault) after fitting the filter the light went out the engine is quieter faster and smoother and Ive gained 3mpg.
I wished car makers made air filters easier to access so we can clean it more frequently between filter changes. Older generation BMW is just a few clips and you can take the filter media and bang the debris and lose dirt off to improve airflow and efficiency.

such a great video. if all could explain as well as you! im also doing a battery replacement. it seems to make access to the battery so much easier to remove the air filter
To replace the battery removal of the intake box is necessary. And I would love to make a video on replacing the battery but I just need to find one to do it on.
I assume we could just remove the top with the T20 and change the filter without removing the housing from its position? You removed the housing to clean it properly? Thanks for sharing
No the 2023 is the U11 series and the replacement is different. It has clips to undo around the air box instead of T20 screws. It’s not too bad though.
Hi there, I recently had my car serviced at a local basic garage and after the service the car seems to have lost a bit of power at all gears. Its manual. And also during 1st gear drive off the car jerks a little. I had air filter, oil filter and pollen filters changed as well as the oil it self. I know they used the correct oil. Bit I am thinking could the problem I am faced with be result of cheap air filter. Many thanks. By the way transmission reset helped a little.
Without all info available it is hard to determine the issue. It is possible the aftermarket air filter would cause this, but I would say it is un-likely. There are some factors to consider such as, are there any DTC’s stored, was the MAF sensor kept clean and dry of dirt or debris. I would also look into the type of Engine oil filter that was used. A restrictive oil filter can also cause lower engine performance. BMW Vanos systems are highly dependent on proper oil pressure. Improper oil and or filters can all be suspect. I would double check all work first. Then consider the possibility that higher quality parts may be needed. If you have further information I can assist you further, for now I hope this helps.
Both brands will be good so long as they are Full Synthetic engine oil. I personally use Mobil one on my car because I find a good deal on it at Sam’s club.
I was able to successfully changed the filter using this tutorial but now everytime I lock the car the alarm starts sounding after 2-3 seconds. Do you know why that would be happening?
I have changed my filter multiple times on the exact same car but didn't do 70% of the stuff your doing. I simply unscrewed around 4 screws that hold the air filter cover, took out old filter, cleaned inside, put new filter in and screwed it together. Again, nothing particularly wrong with your video but it just seems too complicated.
Yes this is true, many steps can be skipped but, some may not be able to access certain screws with ease. Particularly the rear. This also gives the owner the chance to remove any dirt inside the air box by flipping it upside down. Thank you for your insight it is much appreciated. The more information we can get on these repairs the better!
No that series would be different. It would be more like the E90 BMW 328i Cabin air filter Replacement N52/N52K 2006 - 2013 E90/E91/E92/E93 th-cam.com/video/rOVtJnWVPI4/w-d-xo.html If you would like I can make a video for the E84 X1.
makes me long for the 60, 70, & 80s when hand loosening one wing nut would remove a circular cover, give access to air filter, and a view of the carb throat
I wasn’t anywhere near able to work on cars during that time but it is crazy how much needs to get disassembled to do simple service compared to that time.
Oh man the 2014 is way easier! Metal clips instead of bolts holding it together and you don’t need to remove the air filter box because there is a flexible hose connecting the inlet.

You removed the housing to clean it properly?
Thanks for sharing
Yes this is correct. I showed the long version to remove the housing to show the steps to do so.
This can’t be real. I need to unscrew the whole car to change a filter. 😂😂😂😂 thank you for the infos mate!!

How many liters of engine oil with filter
Excellent video thank you, 👍
Excellent step by step video,👍,, will this be the same for a 2023 X1 ?

Excellent video, thank you.

Do I need to remove all the box or can I just remove the top of the air filter? Thanks
You can just remove the top of the filter.
@@friendlymechanic9778 Thank you so much!
my friend which oil engine good for bmw x1 20D after 12000 km orginal oil or castrol or mobile 1 ?! really thanks if u help with answer thanks again 😊

The hood may not be latched all the way. Unlock it and close it again. These hoods may seem like they are closed but one side may not be fully latched
You are great! The best videos I have seen. Looking forward to more videos related to BMW X1 😀 thank you!

Thanks for the reply and doing these vodeos. Absolutely, the more info the better as manufacturers dont share any maintenance information.
Its that same like X1 E84 ?

Thank you. BMW Seattle wants to charge me $245 for this.
bmw dealerships have lost their minds, I got quoted $400 for the cabin filter just to see, I always do filters myself and whatever else I can
Very well made video but I think You gonna have a bunch of noobs taking apart a bunch of unnecessary parts just to change a filter.
Lol anybody else hear dogs panting in the background or am I crazy? Haha
My dogs were begging to be in the video, so we settled on a voice over 😄
I can hear it too.
