- Shiv Kunal Verma is an Indian military historian and a documentary filmmaker who has produced documentaries on Indian defence services, particularly the Kargil War. He is perhaps best known for the book 1962: The War That Wasn't, a study of the Sino-Indian War that occurred in 1962 between India and China. Verma was educated at The Doon School and Madras Christian College. He has written a book on The 1965 War. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 was a culmination of skirmishes that took place between April 1965 and September 1965 between Pakistan and India. The conflict began following Pakistan's Operation Gibraltar, which was designed to infiltrate forces into Jammu and Kashmir to precipitate an insurgency against Indian rule. India retaliated by launching a full-scale military attack on West Pakistan. The seventeen-day war caused thousands of casualties on both sides and witnessed the largest engagement of armored vehicles and the largest tank battle since World War II. India had the upper hand over Pakistan when the ceasefire was declared. Although the two countries fought to a standoff, the conflict is seen as a strategic and political defeat for Pakistan, as it had neither succeeded in fomenting insurrection in Kashmir[33] nor had it been able to gain meaningful support at an international level.
Great insight into our military operations not only to educate our masses but military and political leadership to learn the lessons. Problems keep repeating unless we learn lessons and solve them. Looking forward to read the book. 🙏
God bless this man he has contributed lot to military history of india
Wow.. amazing facts which I never knew.. another great book .
I was a young 2/Lieutenant in Indian Artillery and fought 1965 war. During the war my vision was limited only to my gun position, firing shells and engaging enemy targets on receiving orders but didn't know much about causes of war and political scenario. My best guess is that this book reveals more facts and opinion of the author who has written a book on 1962 war as well.
Great going Kunal 👍.
When is the book out on Amazon?
Any news of availability?
Very interesting, but the pity of it all is that India is one country that says away from allowing war correspondents to go to the front line. This means media has to do with government handouts, which is on the increase. But whatever bone may say about Nehru, he did put up a fight in 1962, but today Modi backed out, maybe because of a lack of faith in an army he was and is trying to saffron's, or maybe he had no faith in himself. Had the allowed a preemptive strike 2 or 3 days after 20 soldiers were killed in June last year, the Chinese would have reacted very differently after that. Today even the Commandant is from among the son of the soil cadre and not the 'posh boys club' as was till the early 70s. These guys yearn for action and will die for it. That is how we won the Kargil war, where our guys fell like 9 pins but persevered. After this rank, saffronisation starts, hence the 3 score vacancies in the senior rank posts and that will be where the defence forces will suffer
