  • The washer will fill up with water in the tank and when it goes into the rinse cycle it stops working and the motor will hum. When doing this project make sure to shut off all electrical power to the unit.

I check the couplers, capacitor, and motor with no success in diagnosing my washer issue. When I turned it on, not matter what setting, the washer would “hum”, until I found your video. I have a different washer so I followed another video on removing the housing and the pump, however, your video represented the issue of an article of clothing stuck in the pump. I had a child’s sock stuck in the pump. Removed the sock, put everything back together and everything runs normal again! Hats off and thank you for a great video!

Thank you so much for making this video! The exact same problem occurred with my washer. A black sock stuck inside the pump. I would have went to lowes and purchased a new washer had I not found your video. You saved me alot of money. God bless you!

I know this video is a couple years old, but just wanted to say that it helped me a lot when I diagnosed and fixed my washer. Washer hummed; wasn't the capacitor, switch, or motor. It was a sock in the pump!

    Thanks Israel,
I’m going to check that next to see if something is stuck in the pump,
It buzzing & not turning, drum is locked in place as well.
One other thing was suggested was a bad coupler.
Trying to eliminate one thing at a time.
    Good informative video.👍

Where the connector plugs into the motor is also the housing for the motors centrifugal start switch (with a single screw in its red fiber insulator cover) under that cover are several sets of contacts that open and close when the motor starts (these same contacts shut off current to the start winding when the moter spins up and the centrifugal mechanism opens them) these contacts carry a lot of current and when they get pitted or dirty they fail to conduct and the motor won't start ,, inspect these contacts , and clean with a fine abrasive like an emery board , if the contacts are severly damaged replace the start switch assembly after carefuly noting the position and color of the wires and what maternal they are on.

My washer stopped near the end while drain out the water, so it's half filled with water and humming. I'm really over my head. There seems to be a list of things it could be. Checked for loose/detached wires, couplings broken, the motor is moving, but don't have a way to check it, guess I'll check the hoses for a clog.

Who's idea was it to put a big appliance (dryer) on top of a... *top* loading washer and leave a little slit to load clothes through?? These things are an abomination, and even more ironically, they're more expensive than a decent front-loading stacked pair with almost *double* the capacity and *double* the spin speed, saving untold billions of kilowatt-hours in wasted electricity that these lazy-spinning top loaders burn through when the dryer has to boil all that excess water out of clothes. Shameful.
