You should include X4. It has a new expansion coming out this year and is up to version 7.0. The current version is excellet and has been for a long time. It's the standard by which I would judge many of these new titles.
Do you think I should also be including EVE Online and No Man's Sky in a 2024 list of new games? They're both getting new stuff too.

Starship simulator is really amazing.
It's a bit much, but ... damn... so much in that. There are no (ZERO) textured controls. Meaning every button, switch, lever, etc does something, and is connected to a power source. So if you smash a power conduit in the hall, you may be cutting power to multiple rooms and systems.
think of your home, and what is inside the walls. Break something, and water comes out, or power is gone. But here its a spaceship, so a lot more stuff in the walls.

Nebulous Fleet Command is just amazing. I got it from early EA and was already a dream coming true. And the next update is mind blowing.
Terra Invicta is made by a team of modders who became a studio after doing the best mods for Xcom 1 and 2. Been recognized by Firaxis themselves as the best mods for the games. I think it is something worth knowing.

Quite surprising that some if not many are trying to revitalize space sim like Freelancer/Frontier:Elite/Starflight/etc. Stellar Wanderer DX, UnderSpace, and NEBULOUS:Fleet Command seems worth checking out the demos (if any).
Was hoping for a remake of Planet's Edge, saving Earth while exploring and making alliance with other aliens while also thwarting the conspiracy.
Great list. Personally, I'm looking forward to Starminer. I was looking forward to Falling Frontier, but I'm afraid it has become so overly complex during development that it will offer very little time for fun at the expense of having to do in-depth complex setup and tuning. I hope they will prove me wrong one day.

Capital command looks exactly the type of game i always wanted, focused on capital ships, i know about klingon academy and bridge commander, but something different and more in depth. Nebulous fleet command is nice but its about fleets not using a single capital.
It looks a lot like independence war
interesting games but for now helium rain, Aquanox deep descent and Avorion will have to do.
I'm still excited for Homeworld 3. It might not be the return of a masterpiece that we hoped but Homeworld was the game that made me realise games could be art and I'm going to have at least some fun playing it because of that legacy. There really isn't anything quite the same as Homeworld.
Star Trucker has some vibes from a movie on similar theme but I forgot the title.
But maybe just maybe, it will have something interesting to offer.

Not long left to wait for Homeworld 3 now... I know the demo got alot of flack but I actually really enjoyed it. ...and it's not like the original games were perfect at launch either, I should know, I played them all on release xD
Egosoft is also talking about releasing a new DLC for X4 lovers so 2024 is looking to be a great year for space games.
Yeah the established space games are mostly getting new content this year as well. X4 has Timelines. NMS got Omega and Orbital, Elite Dangerous is getting updates, and EVE is getting new content too.
Starship simulator seems the best for me. I'm not looking for a battle oriented space game; i want to explore and trade.

Star wanderer demo was cool but familiar nothing new well done creative but familiar
I'd like to give an honorary mention to Astrometica, which isn't on this list. It's a survival space game releasing in early access later this year. The Prologue is scheduled to release at the end of April on Steam.
Don't worry I'm working on survival lists now, games like that will be in those lists.

It was out a couple years ago, it's coming to Steam this year though yeah.
Underspace looks like Freelancer.... even down to the UI. And by a studio with "Pasta" in it's name (as in copy/Pasta)
A lot of people just want a new Freelancer. Making a new version of an old game has proven to be very successful.

X4 took me like a year to actually get into after many starts. It's truly an amazing game. One of the very best space sims. But man... barrier of entry is steep.

Prosperous Universe - monthly paid (6-8 EUR/month depends on subscription's time) excel like game. Nice, but far too expensive for me.

Haha when games like those come along, you can always come back in 10 years with a future PC. I did that with Trespasser.

for 5 years there isnt a single incoming space video that doesnt have falling frontier i know some youtubers who grew tired adding it to every list every single time lol
I didn't mention it in my RTS list and people jumped me for it haha. Luckily they updated the Steam page to say "2025" so that gave a clear reason to not list it. Now it's back to "Coming Soon", so if I don't mention it I'll get jumped again.

There's no such thing. Those old ideas are also copies of older ideas. I've looked, every game is a copy. Even Pong was a stolen clone.

Okay, why do so many of these games feel like they took bits and pieces of EVE Online and made them into their own games?
Because that's probably what the thought it. EVE is massive and completely overwhelming, plus it's been in development for like 2 decades and just so daunting for new players to get into. Many people just enjoy bits and pieces of EVE and not the rest, so why not make games that just focus on the bits some people like.
Horror games for 2024?
I have like another 20 lists in the works, if possible I'll do them all.

It is not pay to win in the slightest. Skill and organisation between players is far more important than any benefit you can buy (generally skill points that allow you to use ships).

Because it's not a new game. I listed it 6 years ago for 2018: th-cam.com/video/jwiX0eVK8Ws/w-d-xo.html For its release year. It's getting a new DLC but DLC doesn't get you back onto my lists.
The video title is "2024's best space games" not "new amazing space games that released in 2024" though.
And even if that was the case, I feel like you're doing a massive disservice not to mention games that are still receiving ongoing support and new content.
@@amshermansen Interpret it this way: X4 is a 2018 game. These are meant to be 2024 games. Relating to their release year and "2024's" being a possessive statement of things belonging to that year. Likewise, the title is not "The Best Space Games To Play In 2024", which would be a list that includes older games. I made a list like that for Simulators.
As for not mentioning games that receive ongoing support, first I have a cutoff date. 4-5 years depending, but even if a game is still in early access I stop listing it after 4-5 years. I mention there are games that are decades old and still going in the intro. Should I be mentioning EVE Online? Star Citizen? No Man's Sky?
This has been a rule for many years now. Otherwise, the list videos just talk about the same games again and again and again. I don't list Foundation, Against The Storm, or Timberborn in the City Building list. I don't list Civ 6, Stellaris, or Crusader Kings 3 in the Strategy lists. Northgard, StarCraft 2, and Dune Spice Wars are not in the RTS list. Not listing X4 here is exactly the same as those.
It's odd that you're bringing it up now when this has been a pretty hard rule for like 5+ years now. I've used this rule/guideline for half a decade at least and a bit more loosely for years before that.

@@SnerdlesWith the exception of the previous iteration, which although slightly improved with time, remained a bust. The Devs did acknowledge however, that it was more of a ‘transit’ release on the way to the latest one we have 👍🏾

TIL aliens are Lovecraft. I swear no one who uses the term 'Lovecraftian' has ever read any Lovecraft.
They're not just aliens, they're Lovecraftian inspired aliens. Aliens could be greys, xenomorphs, or Alien aliens which are Giger, not Lovecraftian. The level of inspiration can vary, some are just aesthetic some are strict, but that doesn't mean it's not Lovecraftian. Generally speaking, Lovecraftian emphasises the horror of the unknowable and incomprehensible. It focuses on themes of cosmic dread, forbidden and dangerous knowledge, madness, non-human influences on humanity, religion and superstition, fate and inevitability, and the risks associated with scientific discoveries.

Of course it would be useful to know how these new games compare to a masterpiece that is probably the best such game ever made, and that continues to be perfectly playable and enjoyable in 2024, but he won't mention it because he has probably never played X4 or most other space games. I have learned watching these TH-cam videos that people who make them know how to make videos, but very little else, with a few rare exceptions. They have no idea what they're talking about.

Everyone just brings up their favourite and gets upset when I don't talk about their personal favourites. How about when looking forward, I just think it's nicer to sometimes let games stand on their own. A passing reference when games are specifically trying to be like an older game sure, but what you want me to mention X4 every year for every space game for over half a decade? C'mon.
After I started playing Avorion... all looks boring... and limited... Randomly generated 1.000.000 systems. They constantly update the game. Mod community is insane. Infinite playability. I have had 5 runs at the game. they all fealt like a new game.
my vote goes to Avorion.... Yes you do not have a cockpit to command you ship but I never saw that as a hinderance...

Because my lists are comprehensive, I assess the best of the year. Note, 'best' doesn't mean they are guaranteed 'good', but they are better than what I don't list. As for the release date, that is true of any upcoming games list. Upcoming games lists are not new, they've existed for decades. If you don't know how they work that's fine. You can think of my lists however you like, the vast majority understand them and find them useful.

sandbox campaign? I thought you either had a campaign or a sandbox.
It's a bit of an evolution, think of like survival city-builders. It's a sandbox world and often procedurally generated, but there's a set of main quests and story that you experience in the sandbox gameplay. That's a campaign in a sandbox.
