I’ve been quilting for about 10 years but after my Mom passed away from cancer I discovered my time in my quilting studio was my therapy. I made four quilts from her clothing for my siblings. I cried, I laughed…sometimes at the same time. But, I found peace. I have a dear friend that’s battling cancer and I’m going to make her a quilt all because of you sharing your story. Thank you for sharing Di. ❤

Yes! Quilting IS cathartic! Breast cancer changes your thinking, heart, and soul. But it humbles you, so the change can be wonderful. Blessings to you!

I just found this video and I wanted to tell you I understand your video and feel a little closer to you now. I doubt you remember but I won your beautiful 12 days of Christmas quilt, the tree on pale green fabric. I to had breast cancer, estregin induced. I was 51 years old. My daughter and her military husband lived in Georgia, I am in the Texas Panhandle. I was diagnosed in November, my father, (my best friend) had died in August of Cancer. My daughter and family were coming home in December for Christmas. I realized it could be my last Christmas with her so I decided not to tell her until after my surgery in January. I wanted to have a lovely Christmas. I told my boss at work and my religious mentor at work and she began praying for me right away and came to my home to pray over me, over my home and said she and some of her friends would gather in my yard over the next 2 months to pray healing prayers to not worry. We did have a lovely Christmas. I had a lumpectomy (the size of a golf ball also) and following surgery I had radiation. My mother was also diagnosed with Alzheimers, I was unable to leave my city to go see her because i was undergoing radiation daily 6 days a week and working full time. I was so very tired and exhausted. I was a Registered Nurse. I had no visitors, no help I went throuth it alone except for my sister and Dorthy, the lady praying for me and her friends praying through surgery. Following surgery my Mother died. I lost them both parents in 8 months. I had no more visitors but continued to work. I'm still going strong, everything is fine, still have mamograms every year. Took a while for my daughter to get over her anger for me not telling her as soon as I found out. She was right, I should have. I look at every day with love, thank God for my life. I am so happy for you to still be here also, Blessings and prayers to you. Your friend. MiChelle.

Wow! What a story! I'm sad to think you were almost alone while you went through the treatment, that must have been so difficult. Now that you've seen my story you know I had a lot of support after we let the cat out of the bag. I'm so grateful for that support. My cancer was 100% estrogen and mine was also the size of a golf ball! We must be sisters from another mother, Hugs Sis!
Of course I remeber you winnign my quilt, that was sure a fun experience. Thank for reaching out and sharing yoru story. Di

A woman I go to church with was diagnosed with breast cancer in late spring. I immediately made her a quilt of pink hearts. Then I had the members of our congregation write words of encouragement to her on the quilt with a permanent fabric pen. She loves the quilt and is using it not only for comfort and warmth during her chemotherapy, but as an Avenue to talk to others about God’s love.

Wow! That is so scary. I have a relative that was a chain smoker and so was her hubby, he passed away awhile before she found out she had cancer. She did like you I want both breasts off. They said it was all clean no signs of cancer. A few months cancer was back in her neck and shoulder, more treatment and cancer free for about 3 months and cancer back in her brain, neck and now stomach . Her daughter had a miscarriage and just had a baby and she wants to be there for her grandbaby. More treatment and they say cancer free again. I feel so bad for her. So far she doesn't have pain once in a while in her stomach. She works at a fashion shop on weekends. She keeps busy. So hard to even imagine what she is going through and she is so positive. Prayers for her. Thank you for sharing your story, you are amazing and teaching all of us who watch you. I am 80 and have CIDP a muscle and nerve disease its an immune disease. I was bad at the beginning, but I won't give up. I keep busy, my house is a wreck, but I planted plants in buckets and kids swimming pools and I can. God Bless you for helping others and making quilts for people. Thank you with all my heart. You are amazing.

Thank you for sharing your story. I, too, am a breast cancer survivor. I was in the middle of moving from a house we had lived in for 53 years when I was diagnosed. We were moving to another state, so planning my treatment was my first thought. How was I going to know who the best providers might be in my new home state! Well, I called on my new quilter friends and of course they had answers. I'm not sure what I would have done without those quilters and my sewing machine! That was July of 2016. I have my annual appointment with the cancer doctor in just a couple of weeks, and of course my regular mammogram, too. I'm now a vocal advocate, just as you are, for regular check-ups and for caregiving (via quilts, usually) to those suffering with this dreaded disease. Let's hope that both of us never hear those words again.

God Bless You Di, as a new subscriber i am making way through all of your videos. Chemo isn’t always about cancer. I have kidney disease which is linked to an autoimmune disease. Chemo was used to try and stabilize it. When taking chemo I became close to those who were taking chemo with me. We became close. I would see all these patients with skull caps who just didn’t want to wear wigs. I decided there is no reason they have to be ugly so I started crocheting colorful sun hats. I would spend as much time as I had between working and chemo treatments to make hats. I donated ten to our local cancer chapters and told them I would continue as long as I was able. God has blessed me in so many ways. I am married to my best friend now 42 years. He is my rock. Then about 5 years ago my kidney dr told me, she did not have an explanation but I had gone into remission, I told her I have the answer … so many prayers have gone out for me and I know it is Gods divine intervention. As of this day I am still in remission. Now that I am quilting I am turning that direction for my gifts to the elderly and the sickly. We must stay strong and positive. Thank you for sharing. I will keep you in my prayers.♥️

Wow! I’ve been watching your channel for over a year now but just now saw this post. Sending virtual hugs for sharing your story. I lost my bestie 24 years ago to breast cancer. She was diagnosed on Oct 10 and gone on Jan 23. So fast. Five years after I had to have a biopsy. I was so scared but it was benign & all is well. My old boss recently lost her significant other suddenly to a heart attack. Altho she is a quilter I am making her a quilt because, quilters need love too! Blessings to you Di and thank you for your channel, sharing your talents and sharing your story! ❤

February 20, 2023 2:14 pm. Hi, Sweet lady! I just watched your cancer story. I’m so glad you have survived this terrible scary disease. I, too, have survived cancer and understand your survivors quilt. The cancer I had was Pancreatic Cancer. I had that awful chemo and then the Whipple Procedure and then more chemo. I’m only 14 months out from surgery so I have to be tested and scanned every 3 months. There is a 5 year survival rate with this cancer. I, too, have a friend that has the same cancer as I did, but hers came back so she is on chemo for life. She’s also a quilter. Thank you for telling your story. I cried while watching it. I truly love your videos and so happy you are here to make them. Stay strong and positive. Sending prayers up for you! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💪💪💪🤗🤗🤗

Di, this video just popped up on my feed. I just want to say thank you for telling your Cancer Story, I so how hard and emotionally it was for you to relive that time in your life, and still is and will be emotional for you. I want to thank you for sharing your gift of quilting and gifting your quilts to others. I love making quilts, and kept thinking of, where and who I could give my completed quilts too. My son played hockey for the high school, as a team they would pick a charity during Christmas time to give gifts, one of the charities was the Ronald McDonald’s home. This year 2024, in October I know where my completed quilts will be going.
Thank you for sharing, I could see how hard it is for you to share and I want you to know how much you encourage me to just do it and the gift will be loved.

Boy, what a story. I've been following you for several months now and this came up and I didn't realize what you had gone through. I too have had a similar story. Same diagnosis and same surgery but reconstructed in the same surgery. My point here is that I can certainly relate to survivers guilt. I can't figure out why I made it through so easily while my sister, at the same time died of colon cancer. Also a dear friends husband. I started a quilt for my sister and didn't finish it in time so put it away. I haven't had the courage to take it out since. It's been over 7 years. I will someday. I feel like I will know when. I want to give it to her only daughter who she never got to see married and happy. Thank you for sharing, even though this was a year ago. It's still very impactful seeing this at any time. My heart feels connected with yours. Bless you!!!

Hi Di, thank you for sharing your cancer story with us. My mom had 2 kinds of cancer and it eventually took her to be with our Lord and savior. She quilted throughout my life. I never had much of an interest in it until she passed. My sister and I have tons of fabric she left us and notions galore. So I grabbed my phone and went to TH-cam to learn how to quilt. I have sewn clothes but quilting is a whole different animal, and I love it! I do wish I would have taken an interest in it when mom was still with us. I just wanted to say thank you for all your videos and bless you for your strength. I have learned a lot from you. Thanks again. Can’t wait for your next video.❤️❤️❤️

Hi Di, thank you for sharing your story. You made me cry. I was diagnosed in July last year with myxofibrosarcoma, a rare cancer in my right inner thigh. Like you, I was in shock. My work had been giving me a hard time because of all the appointments prior to my diagnosis. It was tough. When I first heard, my mind raced and I was numb...radiation treatments negan Aug 19 carrying on for 5 weeks. 4 weeks after that, still suffering from radiation burn, I had surgery to remove the lump. 2 weeks after that, I was admitted to hospital for what turned out to be a major infection in my thigh, a hospital generated superbug, and a second superbug a couple weeks later. In total, my stay was 5 weeks, finally released to go home Dec 17, just in time for Christmas. I bought my sewing machine Aug 2019...I have no idea what possed me to buy a machine as I did not sew. To start, I made about 200 4 " bowtie blocks of which I had no idea what I was going to do with these. Having no one to sew with, or share the learning journey, I taught myself. Well, with the diagnosis, I set out sewing those blocks together for myself. It is my cancer quilt. During my extended hospital stay, I had that quilt with me...it was my hug everyday when I needed one, it kept me warm as I was cold all the time....still am now. Here in Canada, patients were allowed 2 visitors only during the COVID pandemic. My family came to visit but not very often because of the tight hospital security so it was lonly, is a lonely journey even when you have people around. I am lucky because all the cancer was removed during my surgery and I am on the healing road now. Im waiting for the results of my first post cancer tests and should be heading back to work in a couple weeks. I consider myself lucky when I reflect on the people I met who were going thru chemo and radiation together. My heart goes out to everyone, patients and family friends supports, of anyone who has any form of ths dreaded disease. Together we can support anyone in this situation. Hopefully soon there will be a cure. Take care my friend and all the best to you. I will post a photo pf my quilt on your web page. Hugs for you and all who need one.

I didn’t have a quilt of my own when I was having treatments, I wish I would have though. I quilted but, for others. However, now I have my own quilts, ha, ha, ha.
I’m praying for a good report on your follow up and sending ax great big virtual hug. Take care and keep quilting. 🤗😍🤗😍

My best died from a rare blood cancer. I, too, made a quilt for her. That quilt was on her bed , and every night she said it was like I was there holding her, giving her strength. She died with that quilt on her and I was given the quilt back which I have on my couch. When I used it it’s like she there giving me a hug. I do miss her. Thanks for sharing your story-God bless

Wow Di, I just found this video, and am sitting here crying. Thank you for doing this and sending such an emotional video. And sharing your feelings. I have never had cancer, my Mom did and I didn’t quilt then, but do now. My Mom and her Mom were sewers and they repaired clothing, alterations etc. I took up quilting about 3 years ago and love it. And you are right, it heals, going through some rough patches in my life over the last couple of years quilting has been a saving grace.

Thank you for sharing your story. I received my diagnosis two years ago. It wasn't breast cancer, which I had always expected because of other women in my family. I went through chemo and radiation, multiple surgeries, rehab, wound vac for 6 months, and am still in chemo and radiation. Quilting keeps me going, along with Christ, no matter what else goes on. I appreciate reading what you went through.

P.S. Before surgery, I asked my son to shave my head. It's now growing back, a year after surgery. My head doesn't get cold. I wear headbands like the babies do. A friend made them for me. I declined wigs and figured everyone knows what's under the caps and it isn't comfortable to wear the caps, so ... headbands. =)

Thank you for sharing your courageous story. I can so relate, but for a different reason, I am a brain tumor survivor. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2014 the week of Thanksgiving. I turned to social media to distract me & keep my mind busy during my radiation and got hooked on sewing again and bag making. Since then, the tumor has grown twice, and I needed two craniotomies to get as much as they could. Thankfully I live right so close to Boston and have an amazing medical team. I have several physical challenges due to the nerve damage the tumor caused but am grateful that I am still better than they originally anticipated! Out of this life altering event The Crafted Heart was born. Now I have this new journey and handcrafting talent to share with others. I've had the amazing honor of meeting so many incredible people like yourself who have inspired me and keep me going. Sending positive vibes and prayers your way for continued good health.

What a beautiful moving and courageous story. Your generosity in gifting as part of your healing journey is a great example of the power of doing some to others.
I had some breast cancer fabric that came in a mystery bundle. It was beautiful fabric. My daughter used to nanny for a woman who now is diagnosed with cancer (the kind where she needs a bone marrow transplant). I made beautiful Lemoyne Stars and set them on point with the fabric, and we will be gifting her this quilt to provide her with some measure comfort and joy as she undertakes the arduous journey of treatments.

survivals guilt- In 2012 I was diagnosed with state 2 cervical cancer with a negative test of HPV. They tested me several times because usually cervical cancer is caused by HPV but it turned out mine was genetic. Oh joy. That 's not a cancer that people really care about because they think you did something wrong and deserve to get it. I did 36 rounds of radiation and 7 rounds of chemo. Fast forward about 4 years and my brothers daughter who was only 16 at the time was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. She fought hard but it eventually wrapped around her heart and took over her liver and she passed away. She passed right before her 18th birthday. Cervical cancer actually runs in my family and skips generations. It is not one that you get flowers when you are in the hospital, in fact, it causes people to throw you away because you must have done something to deserve this. I really wish they would come up with a cure. Enough is enough. I am sorry for your friend, but I am so glad that you are still here.
