@happycamper3278 I never liked Jerry Mathers. Ever. Tony Dow was barely tolerable. Barbara Billingsley was charming. Hugh Beaumont was a cool dude. *And I still don't like Jerry Mathers.
@@leelarson107 Jerry Mathers was ok as "The Beaver" the first season or two... but his acting was horrible as he got older. My kitchen table could deliver his lines better than he did. Tony Dow was good throughout the series.
Points well taken Hugh. Pretty risque back in '50-'51. Klever, if somewhat korny dialogue, also has a hole in the plotline. If they'd seized that pocket pistol sooner instead of just passing it around, they'd of had the murder weapon & wife as the culprit.
I'm glad Hugh Beaumont gave up the thug life, moved to Mayfield, became an advertising exec, married June and raised 2 wonderful, if sometimes troubling, boys. It just goes to show you if you work hard, you can succeed.
A tight script with quick, witty banter and a stoic leading man - exactly how I like my noirs! The only thing that gets me is the pacing... this feels more like two separate TV episodes, rather than a continuous feature-length film.
We knew from a scene where Ward Cleaver was filling the cigarette lighters (with lighter fluid remember?) that there was a possibility that Beaver's Dad could be a smoker - But here we see him with pipe and cigarette in hand ! However, if you look closely, you never see any smoke coming out of him !
I'm a long time fan old movies especially film noir, Hough Bomount did as good as anyone could with this script, sadly the police ignoring the obvious and focusing on O'Brien doesn't make sense to me, still a decent movie
Someone tell me I am wrong... This appears to be two episodes of the radio series "Pat Novak for Hire" ... with Jack Webb as the "Dennis O'Brien". It also had a Genious lush similar to Ed Brophy's character here.
I saw the other one starring this character called Pier 23 it was good too. Are there any other ones from this series? I'd like to watch them if there is.
Reading the other comments made me stop and think." Am missing something about Hugh Beaumont and his acting skills?" And then the answer came to me, "Not at all". He and Dennis O'Keefe would have made a good pair of bookends.
The 1950's would NOT have recognized San Fran from the 2023. What a HELLHOLE, and the whole state of CA is crumbling w/decay & depravity. The best days of CA is long gone & will never return.
Is there a name for these kind of light-hearted detective stories? They're not really noir. Noir is dark, gritty and serious. In these types of detective stories, the hero is never phased by people trying to kill them, or cops trying to send them to the electric chair. They just laugh it off and make wise cracks.
Absolutely incredible witty dialogue from the 50s love these Noir movies
Who knew Hugh Beaumonts best roles are all these great film noirs!
I know huh. The Beavers dad was a great movie actor back in the day. 😂😂
As if the Professor is a Mr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes to Hugh Beaumonts ....

So many clever lines for a B-Noir❤

He was such a good actor.
He was perfect as "Ward Cleaver" so that kinda typecast him.

I’m going to rewatch simply to write down all those corny one-liners. Thank you so much for sharing.
"Mr. Cleaver" makes a pretty cool detective! I love Brophy in all his films.
Edward Brophy is a true gem😊
Hugh Beaumont from leave it to beaver, plays a flat foot. Loved it
He rents a boat. He's not a dick, but he's trying to find out what happened. That's as far as I got before I gave up on this movie.
Hugh Beaumont had one of those unique "voices" !....
"Yes sir, this town really has some good points"
That could put out an eye
Geez Beave... what could you possibly be talking about?

I watched leave it to beaver 😂😂
I was always suspicious though that he changed his name to Ward Cleaver but you're right he had a criminal history. That explains it.
As a hard-boiled detective, he makes a good mild-mannered suburban husband and father. Not exactly a Bogart or Cagney, him.
I wouldn't call being the father of 'The Beaver' a measure of 'success'. Fraalf.
Yup but as mentioned a couple of times in the show…he was pretty hard on the Beaver a few times.
Beaumont makes for a fantastic private eye.
I have always had great respect for Mr Beaumont. He just seemed to be a downright nice guy!
A Methodist minister..
Best moment 25:55 on. Hugh trying to do a slick move with the telephone and failing. Director said looks good to me, no retake!
@389383--- thanks for pointing that out, I didn't even notice that at all. I like when viewers point out bloopers with the time stamp. Thanks again.
@@chucksnightmare7674😊😊
JUST COULD BE that it was intended that way. O'Brien was noted for making a clumsy move now and then and taking a punch besides.
The funny witty quips just keeping coming!
I liked, "made as much of a stir as mother's day in an orphanage."
Beaumont was a lay minister in the Methodist Church. During World War II, he was a conscientious objector and served as a medic.
Interesting
Thank you for posting this film!
Excellent, thank you.
Hugh Beaumont is the only really good actor in this film.
Still enjoyed it. Thanks

Edward Brophy as the erudite professor is hilarious and perfectly cast.
Oh ! Sure enough !
Why does he remind me of Ernest Borginine...?
Love the writing/script. Enjoyable noir.
The auction scene is "borrowed" from a Sherlock Holmes film "Dressed to Kill".
Yeah the music boxes made by a convict. Haaa....
So, in your world, Conan Doyle invented the auction? 🙄
