Hi.. Do you still practise the dance form as your ancestors followed? Which dance form is it that your family followed?

British accused temple dancers being licentious and using it for attracting men because they could not comprehend women being professional dancers who served Gods. Their protestant upbringing refused to see temple dancers as anything other than harlots. They passed the Devdasi act within their dominions and influenced other kings in India to do the same.
This is a great tragedy for Indian art, culture and dance traditions. It is sad that these accusations of Devdasis using their art to entrap men are still being repeated in what we are taught. I wish we reviewed these historical issues in the cold light of day and wrote history from our point of view.

So sad that there is no mention of how Vallathol with the help of Mukunda Raja recruited Thankamani Govindan Kutty of Kunnamkulam to learn, perfect and perform this art under Kalyani Kutty amma. Later she became the wife and partner of Guru Gopinath.

Very good information about how Kalyani Kutty Amma played a crucial role in the survival and transmission of Mohiniyattam! Thank you. Sorry it was not mentioned in this lovely video.

Yes, Thankamani, daughter of Pandaalalth Govindan Nair was the first student of Mohiniattam at Kerala kalamandalam. She was trained by Smt Mankara Kalyani Amma. Chinnamuamma was also a teacher at the outset

Old documentaries on art and culture with extremely good narration. India has unfortunately lost this level of detail and quality in every field.

It’s so sad that there is no mention of Kanak Rele, who is the only Mohiniyattam exponent who is honoured with Padmabhushan.
