This was one of the traditions in Odissi dance in Odissa's ancient temples where men dressed as women and danced🙏🏻🙏🏻 They were called Gotipua

i can't possibly describe the strange feeling that just surfaced in my heart....a bit of nostalgia as if i've known this since my past births, so much pride and happiness that is bubbling in my heart with tears threatening to fall down. its been 12 years now that i'm learning this dance form. the soul purpose of my dance and all its fruits being offered to lord Jagannath only. i feel so much blessed.

I got very emotional watching this old documentary. Padmashri Sanjukta Panigrahi dancing to the beats of her Guru Keluprasad Mohaptra (the one with the mardal) under the vocal administration of Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi --- alas none of those legends grace the earth today.

My mistake entirely. It is certainly Padma Bibhusan Guru Shri Kelucharan Mohapatra affectionately regarded as Kelu babu. Thanks for the correction!

Sanjukta panigrahi has to be the most elegant and graceful odissi dancer I’ve ever seen.

Very beautiful production on Odissi Parampara. Shri Ghanashyam Mohapatra's pioneering effort in producing the documentaries on different subjects is highly commendable.

I was simply stupified by the rendering of Pt. Raghunath Panigrahi. I absolutely was unawares such great calibre of music before I came here. The Shankarabharana Pallavi sounds so much better in his ministrations, and the kuru yadunandana was simply mind-boggling. Though I couldn't identify the raga in which the kuru yadunandana was sung. Can anyone help?

Sad at that time the khmer rouge was going on, killing the classical khmer dance of apsara in cambodia, they both are similar in a way

There certainly is a masculine side in Odissi. But it is overtly masked by the feminine as the original dancers were always female or men reenacting female.
However these days there are many schools which have successfully distilled out the purer masculine sides.
