    8:41 Depends on whether or not you go by Sun Tzu's definition of a good general. If you do, then yes, Robert E. Lee was a bad general, as his victories cost the Confederacy manpower they could not afford to lose. However, this ignores the fact that the goal of the Confederate Army at Gettysburg was to end the war with one decisive victory, as Robert E. Lee recognized that the Confederacy could not replace their losses as easily as the Union.

    • @Zach-mw5so
      @Zach-mw5so 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By all accounts General Lee was one of the best tacticians on either side of the war. That was why Lincoln asked him to command the Union before he sided with his home state of Virginia.

      Lee was a good tactician, and even decent at the operational level, but strategically he wasn’t that good….though that may be because the Confederacy in general was in a strategically awful position.
      To be honest, the South was going to do horribly regardless of who was running its military.

    • @rejvaik00
      @rejvaik00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah pretty much, the South couldn't conquer the North, what they hoped for was as you said just one really big decisive battle to let their bid for independence be recognized

    • @bkjeong4302
      @bkjeong4302 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rejvaik00 The South never even wanted to conquer the North-that would defeat the point of secession. What they wanted was for the North to let them keep doing slavery, not to get rid of the North.

    • @rejvaik00
      @rejvaik00 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bkjeong4302 that's just what I said, they couldn't ever hope to do so they wanted a decisive victory to sour the taste of the war so they could sue for peace, and they came close too
      Luckily they failed on all fronts of international diplomacy and didn't secure a single foreign ally to help in their war effort unlike the big sister America who got France, Russia, and Spain to help in her war of independence from Britain

    1:01 To be fair, the Americans saw the most resistance on Omaha and Utah than the British and Canadians did in their beaches, so from a cinematic stance, it makes the most sense to portray the Americans’ perspective since their landings were more bloody.

    • @vito7428
      @vito7428 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Utah never even gets portrayed in anything. It's always only Omaha. I get that it's a good setpiece for games and movies because of the near disaster it was but the other landings also saw a fair amount of action. Especially the days after the initial landings where the British and Canadians fought some of the hardest battles against the bulk of German armor

    • @cutler_beckett
      @cutler_beckett 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vito7428 Of course, I was just saying that the most people were killed on Omaha, which is why movies portray that landing than the others. However, I have seen movies and games portray Utah beach and a few others portraying Juno.

    The reason why there's such immense focus on US troops for the D-Day invasion is predominantly because their respective beaches encountered heavier resistance as opposed to the British or the other Allies. This is not to say that the Allies did not encounter any resistance.
    This is to say, however, Omaha beach alone saw the first two waves of the landing parties completely wiped out before seeing any significant headway passed the defensive positions. And Utah saw significant resistance from the beach and stiff resistance further inland. Not to mention, Pointe Du Hoc and the 90 surviving men of 250 in the 2nd Ranger Battalion.
