We had a hand dug stone lined well where I grew up in Western New York that was supposedly used for cooling the milk jugs from the dairy barn that used to be there and burned down decades earlier. It was about 4 feet across. Used to use it to water the horses and gardens. It was always ICE cold and jet black. One year I looked in it and there was a dead rabbit floating in it so i got a milk crate and tied a rope on it and used it to pick out the carcass. As soon as i got it out its skin slipped off and it looked like gelatinous spam spackle was oozing out of it's gray skin and greasy hide. The stink was unbearable. I bleach bombed it and dropped a trash pump down to the bottom. Every time i bounced the pump it would send up a surge of black oily sludge. Once the well was empty there was chunks of burnt timber, black and rotten sticking up out of the sludge on the bottom, barely visible through the fog that formed from the cold. As if that wasn’t creepy enough, when i pulled it up the impeller of the trash pump was packed with bones from everything that had fallen in, gotten hypothermia and slowly drowned. I've been profoundly creeped out by wells ever since. Oh and We never used it to water anything again after that.

Thanks for the story! I am still debating whether I just need to fill it with gravel and decommission it properly. It pre-dates the man-made pond on the property that was built in the late 70's so I should probably just use the pond for any garden/lawn irrigation I need. I certainly will never use it for drinking water! The well was originally used for an old chicken hatchery on neighboring property. Have a good one!

Yes, I was walking very cautiously around it. Going to get a cement cap for it soon!

All you need to do is find 1 coin....12 years later....Next on Discovery. Oh, you all have to to that look. Did they find a screw? Everyone looks at each other, dramatic music plays😂

Hah! I should have tried to retrieve the 'antique' wood that was sitting on the bottom.. 🤣
