  • Get Your Children Out of Foster Care ASAP!
Hello, thanks for joining me here today. My name is Kevin Seaver, trusted lawyer since 1991, helping you successfully fight DCF, turning negatives into positives, and that's all life is.
Today's story is about a grandmother who called me up and she wanted to come in and see me and I said by all means please do. Bring all your copies, as I tell all clients, do not bring originals, those are for the court. She came in with a bunch of paperwork and she sat and told me her story about how her daughter had recently lost custody of her grandchildren. She was devastated. She asked me what I thought of foster care. I said, I don't, not when there is a loving, nurturing, caring grandmother. My grandma was terrific. She was the salt of the earth. I loved her dearly. I can't imagine being in foster care if I had such a great grandmother as I had out there ready, willing and able to love and nurture me as this nice grandmother appeared to be. And she was a bucket of tears and she said, Kevin, my grandchildren are a mess in foster care, my daughter's a mess because they're in foster care, and I'm a mess because my grandchildren are in foster care. She begged me, she pleased with me. Please help me become a foster parent to get my grandchildren.
So I told her, you gotta have a strategy and a plan. You fail to plan, you plan to fail. You gotta have one. DCF's got a strategy, they've got a plan. They took your grandchildren and placed them in foster care. You must now have a plan to get them back. You must do it immediately. She said why is there such an urgency? I said, time's ticking. The sand's running through the hour glass. DCF is going to reach a point where they are going to put your grandchildren on an adoption track and that means you'll never see them again because you're rights run through the mother. And she turned as white as a ghost. She said to me, let's get serious now, what's the strategy, what's the plan, and I gave her one. Now in this case it was mother with a drug problem. No surprise there.
Grandparents raising children in our society today has become prevalent. A lot of them are doing it despite their advanced age or infirmities. They are doing a good job and this woman would also do a good job. She talked about how she loved her grandchildren, visited them all the time, stayed over her house, had beds for them, had a room for them. No one takes better care of your own than your own. There were some impediments, bumps, hiccups and glitches along the way, but they weren't insurmountable. And DCF much to their credit worked in the spirit of cooperation, with me, with the grandmother and we got the children placed with her.
Now, where does this story end? I don't know, because when you have an addiction, especially the opiates, you can be clean one day and dirty the next. That's reality. It's not my job or anyone else's to advocate for a bad result but rather advocate with hope and I pray and hope this mother, as many others out there in the commonwealth who have an addiction problem, kick this monkey off their back. It's awful. There for the grace of God it's no lie. There's many out there that have that substance abuse, have that addiction, and it's rampant in our society and thank heavens for grandparents.
But the problem doesn't end there. We've got to make this system much simpler for grandparents that love, nurture and care for their grandchildren to become that loving nurturing caring person for their grandchildren. It's way to hard, with too many impediments in the way of grandparents. Now how do we do that? Simply make the home study 1 day, all the information should be in, that should take another day. It shouldn't take, weeks, or months or even years to complete a home study. It should take less than a week. It should take a few days. And I just don't get it I don't understand it. We're making it more and more difficult for nice nice nice people like grandparents to get their own grandchildren, and it's absolutely positively wrong. Gotta change, gotta change the system. Gotta make it easier to get children out of foster care and with loving nurturing caring grandparents.

My grandmother was my best friend & greatest support throughout my first 32 years of life until God called her home in 2012. I don't know who I'd be or if I'd be without her. I hope & pray that every child knows the unconditional love of a warm, nurturing, reliable, wise, resilient grandmother, Aunt, or other dedicated family member. Peace be with you all.
