  • A Minotaur I rocket launched Nov. 19 from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on the U. S. Air Force's Operationally Responsive Space Office's ORS-3 mission. The ORS-3 Mission, also known as an enabler mission, will demonstrate and validate launch and range improvements for NASA and the military. Aside from the primary payload -- the Space Test Program Satellite-3 (STPSat-3), ORS-3 transported about 28 small cubesat satellites to space. Among the cubesats were NASA's PhoneSat2 and the first cubesat built by high school students.

    This was awesome as soon as it launched we ran outside and within 10 seconds saw it clear as day here in the Delmarva peninsula. My boys were really thrilled..

    We watched this on NASA's website last night and we are in North Carolina and we looked towards Virginia and could actually see the flames of the rocket in the sky, could just barely see. It was freaking awesome.

    Im from Reading,Pa about 150 miles from Wallops with such a clear sky the launch looked just as clear as the laddee launch I watched it all the way untill it flew out of sight down range.congrats to the team at Wallops!!!!

    God damn that was loud and quick. Just watched the MAVEN launch yesterday and that didn't look like it was going to get off the pad, this fucking exploded off. Damn that's cool. I want to see a launch in person.

      Yeah there might be a lil difference in size on those two lol. I like the difference in how long they take to reach Mach 1

      This was a solid fuel rocket(Minotaur 1), so it takes off very quickly versus the Altas V that MAVEN was launched with which uses a 2 part liquid fuel. I was actually startled when watching this because the orange paint made me think it was liquid fuel rocket, then all of a sudden "BAM", scared the hell out of me.

    That puppy left in a HURRY! You expect a leisurely lift off based on all the films from the Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle missions, but this thing is explosively fast. Of course, you don't have to worry as much about G-forces on an unmanned flight.

      If I can banter a guess it's that the Maven module had a far heavier payload into orbit as it had to get a-lot further than this. Maven was a tanker, this was a sports car.
      However I should stress that my main evidence for this is common sense and Kerbal space Program, so don't quote me on this

    There should be at least one rocket launch per day. The moment of ignition was really SPECTACULAR. During daylight we don't have the opportunity to see all those flames erupting from the engine. I prefer the daytime launches if on-board cameras are used filming the ascent, making us feel like an astronaut.

    The booster was a repurposed Minuteman ICBM. They were designed to get out of their silos in a hurry before they could be targeted. This is sort of what the beginning of a nuclear war might have looked like.
    I went outside right after the launch and followed the rocket's flight as long as I could. I saw two different objects separate during the third stage burn, neither of which are visible in this video. One was right after third stage ignition and the other was about 20-30 seconds later.

      yup an ATK Thiokol Minuteman Missile. when START 4 went into effect all Minuteman's were scrapped Orbital bought them and uses them for the Minotaur Program they also use decommissioned Trident,Poseidon,and Peacekeeper Missiles

      @sizzlebread23 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Obviously not junk.

    • @geomodelrailroader
      @geomodelrailroader 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sizzlebread23 I call it rocket recycling when START 4 was signed all Minuteman Missiles were scrapped Orbital wanted to recycle them so they did not sit in the warehouse in Promontory because solid rocket fuel degrades casings if it is allowed to sit. ATK Thiokol is Orbital Corps suppler all of the casings are refueled at the Promontory facility and some are tested on the same test stand used for the SRBs then the casings are filled with fresh fuel and shipped by truck to Salt Lake Airport or Hill Airforce base where they are loaded into a C5 for the trip to the launch pad when it arrives Orbital adds the satellite which they built and encases it in their faring which replaces the Minuteman's nose cone then they launch it and since it is a Cold War Missile which uses solid fuel if you blink you will miss the launch.

    Hello, i am a freshman in high school. One day I would like to be an astronaut, however most launches recently have been with the Russians. Should I learn Russian, and would it better my chances of becoming an astronaut?

    • @CamBeNub
      @CamBeNub 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't necessarily have to learn another language, after all english is the lingua franca. However, most astronauts whose first language is english learn others as well (mostly Russian). If you are familiar with Chris Hadfield, he answered a question like this in one of his videos (I don't remember exactly which one though).

    • @Razorcane
      @Razorcane 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Astronauts working with other space agencies typically need to know multiple languages. Most of NASA's ISS Astronauts can speak Russian, if not all, and a fair few of them speak French, Japanese, and the like.
