      I think the biggest problem people are having with it is that the people wanting these procedures want it paid for by NHS (public healthcare). I can see the point there. NHS isn't for personal elective procedures. That comes out of your own pocket.

    • @RyanSheckler60
      @RyanSheckler60 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      sari c I agree with you completely because if you want bigger boobs you have to pay for it themselves so it should be the same way with electively becoming sterile it would be different if they medically needed to have a procedure like this in order to to live than that is fine if public health care to pay for it because in those cases have a procedure like this can be looked at in the sense of having a broken bone and relying on public health care

      @grooveythoughts 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Cost a lot less for one procedure over having a (3/4 of a million pound) preemie baby or 10 kids on the mthly social benefits .. SO not a good reason to deny a surgery.

      One is vanity and general dissatisfaction with your appearance and another is a person thinking ahead as to whether they can/should reproduce and be responsible for another life. I understand you believing it should not be paid for through health care but the two are completely different.

      Isabel Lieb AMAZING comment! I was told the very same thing by the doctors, at first.
      I never wanted children from the time I could first have memories. At 24, my best friend saw a health program on TV and it turned out that at that time, the government would PAY to tie or burn our one's tubes, even if one did not ever have children! I won't bore you with the details of how awful I was treated when folks found out and how the doctors were almost suspicious of me because at the time I didn't even have a boyfriend or even a lover, but I found a psychiatrist who really believed in my sincerity, and I had my tubes burned out a few weeks shy of my 25th birthday. I was told literally hundreds of times ("you'll regret this one day, just you wait until you hit 40!" or "you are a WOMAN and a woman's body is meant to have kids! What kind of [sic] weirdo are you, anyway?"). Sigh. I am now 6 weeks shy of my 48th birthday and my 58 year-old husband and I have been together for 21 years. Neither one of us has kids, neither one of us wants kids, we have the life and pets that we want, along with lots of freedom and many more choices available to us. We are happy and we have NO REGRETS. If someone wants kids and responsibly plan the offspring and provide them with a full and well-adjusted life, both emotionally and financially, then I will not judge you! I will wish you well and good fortune and happiness. So, when one hears that someone doesn't want kids, don't tell them "it's just a phase" or threaten them with "you will regret this somedaaaaaaaaaay!", just leave us alone and don't judge!

      Also, the NHS dispenses contraception (pills, implants, patches, etc. and condoms to those under 25), the government pays benefits out to everyone with children (regardless of income), and pays for schools etc.

      I totally agree that it is their life. I was positive I did not want children in my twenties. Absolutely positive. After I turned thirty I completely changed my mind and now I have three beautiful children. I wouldn't have done sterilization. If you ask me, if I were these young people why not freeze some eggs or sperm in case you change your mind and yet you still have no worries about getting pregnant. If I could go back in time, I would have donated or sold my eggs when I was younger to struggling couples. When I got breast cancer at 37 yrs old I wish I have froze some of my eggs because I wasn't done having children but once you go through chemotherapy and take the meds to that you really wouldn't want to use the eggs inside of you not to mention that I am too old. I wish I had froze fresh eggs in my early twenties to use now at 45.

    • @etarver13
      @etarver13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      "There are so many children who need good homes"
      Many people really need to think deeply about this. As soon as you put a baby or a child up for adoption they need a home ASAP. People always trying to use the adoption argument as a great alternative from abortion, but they fail to realize the importance and the urgency of getting a baby or child a home and staying at that residence. Human children do not operate the same way as a dog or cat, you just cannot place them from home to home and expect them to be mentally or emotionally sound. So yeah just adopt. There are too many kids that desperately need homes.

      And do you think anyone can simply adopt, just as easy as buying a pack of chewing gum? No, there are certain criteria that must be fulfilled (depending on the jurisdiction). Probably for good reason. Most of them, at least.
      Personally I think that nobody should be allowed to adopt children unless they already have children on their own.

Why is their wants/opinion less valid or inherently less 'moral' than my own? biologically the only reason? Oh, where'd you go to consult biology on it's motivations? Ohhhh, evolution, plain common logic. If you don't breed, your genetics get dropped from the gene pool, right? Yeah, except my brother and sister both bred and their genetics are my genetics so my genes ARE still in the pool. What's not in the pool is the flawed offspring of a person who categorically does not want to deal with babies. That's not a bad thing. As to "purpose of being born" it's pretty limiting to suggest we're on the level with adult moths, here to spawn and die. Humans who didn't have children are often the ones who advance society because they're not tied down and exhausted. Therefor, sterile humans can very much advance the human race and it's place on the earth. Biology must surely appreciate the sterile humans in it's evolutionary designs, don't you think? Or do you think? Because this might be too complicated for you to follow. Sum it up: not breeding means more working means great value means important too.

    I just wanted to comment my experience with a woman who didn't want children. My auntie was quite the eccentric. Bright colored hats, flaming red hair. She was an artist. She told me my whole life she didn't want kids of her own. She didn't want kids of her own but she loved kids. She was the best babysitter. She was so carefree. Dancing, painting. So easy to talk to. People should definitely be able to make their own decisions and choices, sterilisation should be a more available option.

  • @schnabeltiertv
    @schnabeltiertv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +70

    Yes, it's a serious decision, but having a child is much more serious. Not having kids is a personal choice, but when you're having kids, there is another human being involved.
    And yet, we don't treat people who want children like that.
    " But, it's so final! Once you're a parent, you'll always be a parent. What if you change your mind about it later?
    You're only 25, why not wait a few years? What if you regret having a child, hm?"
    I had a friend go through this, she asked many doctors, again and again, but in the end, she had to wait till her late 30s to get the procedure. Years later, she's still happy with her decision, but of course she whishes she'd been able to do it earlier.
    They treat you like not having kids is always the wrong decision. Oh, you DO want kids, you just don't know yet. You don't know what you're doing.

    I was sterilized at 25. I have several degrees including a Masters (some people think that's important to note because I should pass my "smarts" on". I told no one of my tubal ligation because I didn't care about anyone else's opinions. I paid for it myself through private insurance, though it took a few years to convince my surgeon. Though I have an (invisible) physical disability that would make pregnancy harmful too me, and motherhood awful... the reason I chose sterilization is because I don't want to have kids. Having kids is a choice, I choose NO. Not ever.

My body, my future, my choice. Its the definition of selfish - but we seem to think of selfish in negative terms. Its interesting isn't it how you would call this choice brave, it shouldn't have to be thought of as brave at all. Self centered, selfish, ego-centric are all things I have been called regarding this decision... why yes, a decision about me, for me, advocated by me, thought at length by me, performed willingly on me. This decision and my life IS all about me. So by definition I would expect it to be selfish.

Someone who hates children just shouldn't have children. A child deserves loving caretakers, not simply adults who will clothe and feed them. Having a child because your family pressures you is also an awful reason. Let people make their own decisions about their own lives!

Not to mention ethically you shouldn't have a child if you don't want a child. Sterilization is actually more responsible than any other option. And if they regret it, so that's their issue. If you get a tattoo and regret the whole country doesn't flip out they're like "we'll you shouldn't have gotten it". I much rather someone regret sterilization than regret a child. Also why do we care if they regret it? We don't care when we're aborting them ( in mean rhetorically not me personally).

    • @chrisrelhard
      @chrisrelhard 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      actually, it's extremely rare that they'll give a child irreversible hormone treatment. what usually happens is that if there's a child that's showing extreme signs of gender dysphoria and has been diagnosed by a psychiatrist, they will be given hormone blockers. these have minimal risks if the child does decide later on that the sex they were born as does align with their gender identity, but they mean the whole world to someone who can have those extra few years to really think about it and go through puberty as their preferred gender.
      it's still difficult because there are still risks, but it is huge to be able to start treatment before the effects of puberty. after puberty, many secondary sex characteristics are set in stone. for someone born male, no amount of testosterone blockers or estrogen will change their voice, facial hair, or bone structure. for someone born female, no amount of testosterone will completely change fat distribution, breast development, or bone structure. these are the sources of dysphoria for a lot of trans people who started to medically transition later in life, even just after puberty.

      savannah seaton If the NHS didn't pay for contraceptives then the welfare state would end up having to pay child benefit for thousands of unplanned children, since abortions aren't a treatment for the really sick. Surely it is better for the NHS to pay the £8 a year the basic combined pill costs or the £83 the 3-5 year implant costs instead of the £1076 the government pays for child benefit? Not to mention that i will pay more than the cost of my contraceptive for a year in taxes that will fund the NHS anyway. Being on the cheapest oral contraceptive for the duration of your child bearing years will only cost the NHS about £250, a fraction of what sterilisation surgery would.
      I'm 18 and there is nothing I want more than to one day be a mother in the far future, but without the pill on the NHS hundreds of girls like me would become teen mothers and would end up costing the tax payer even more money as they'd be without work, looking after young children and cutting short their education.
      IVF is a treatment for the sick, people who can't get pregnant otherwise have a medical defect, most of which value a child above all else but simply can't afford the thousands of pounds it would cost them personally to do through a privatised money-grabbing system. Many women use contraception regardless of sexual activity to regulate menstruation and ease its painful symptoms.
      I'm not trying to be antagonistic, I just feel the points you have made are coming from a very selfish and inconsiderate view. Saying you hope to be infertile is incredibly insensitive to the people who are infertile. I grew up with a single father, i understand the desire to not put a child through similar experience, but the cause of being a single parent is not necessarily even having a child but being a bad partner or choosing bad partners or being irresponsible with your contraceptives.

    • @KaleidoscopeEffect
      @KaleidoscopeEffect 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      savannah seaton Or maybe you can just use a DIU, it gives you like 6 years of not being able to get pregnant. If you said you just didn't want kids I wouldn't advice you against getting the procedure done to be infertile. But you are just afraid of being a single parent :/ You are too young to know if you will meet someone that will make you feel secure of not being abandoned ever and being able to raise the children with him. Fear is not the most rational reason to get this procedure... With a DIU you can just choose when to have or not have a baby, and if those years goes by and you still don't want any children then by all means, get it done.

    My daughter is a beautiful, fun loving person, but she voiced her thoughts quite loudly, that she never wanted kids! And these were voiced at 12 years old! She always told guys she dated, that if they wanted kids someday, she was not the person they wanted to be with. She finally met the man of her dreams, who also did not want kids! She could not get fixed because of doctors telling her no, that she was to young! Which she wasn't. She was married and taking all kinds of protection to keep from getting pregnant. She went to her doctor and talked about it, because her husband was concerned about her health because of all the years of birth control pills. She came home crying and told her husband they said no. He told her it would be ok because they did not turn men down, and so he was fixed! Now they are happier than ever and living their life like they want. She asked me how I felt about her not having me grandkids? Well, I have always known how she felt about this and it was always fine with me! I have grandkids, great grandkids out the ass! In my opinion, they were doing the responsible thing!

      This worries me a lot. I have a 19 year old & a 15 year old. They both don't want biological children. The 19 year old, yea I maybe could see her changing her mind at some point because she honestly loves kids but I still see it as her decision. The 15 year old though. She won't ever change hers. She fiercely loathes children & does her absolute best never to be in the same place they are.
      She isn't an awful person. She loves & takes wonderful care of her 2 dogs. She is smart & not prone to emotional outbursts. She just doesn't want kids ever. Why in the world should she be forced into either having them or being on hormones that she has a negative reaction when she takes them for 30+ years if she wants to have a relationship? It's madness. I love her a lot & she has so many special gifts but a maternal instinct is not one of those gifts.
      I don't need grandchildren because I Goddamn refuse to put any want I may have over how they choose to live their lives. Who does that? Telling them "you'll change your mind" is the same damn thing as telling them "I know what's in your head better than you do." As much as everyone thinks everyone feels the same things, that just is not the case. If both my daughters wanted to be sterilized, I'd have zero issues with that. If I as their mother have no problem with their decision, how can someone who sees them for 15 minutes maybe a couple times a year have such a huge issue with it?
      As an fyi for all those "I shouldn't have to pay for your lifestyle" types, we all pay for each other's choices. That's the way society works. I'd much rather pay the small cost for a tubal ligation for someone that knows they shouldn't have kids than the benefits, school, therapy & possible prison costs of someone raising kids they don't want & shouldn't have had. I knew I didn't want to have kids from around the same age (over 5yrs b4 having sex) and I've NEVER had a seconds doubt and I've caused three guys to get sterilized. One which I'd NEVER wish that on but it was his choice and he didn't include me in it (he was 20 without kids), and two others who already had at least two kids and didn't want any more anyways I just gave them the last push they needed.
      So apparently I'm a one women wrecking machine. Lol I'd LOVE to be sterilized but it costs FAR more, and I don't tolerate ANY injury as it'd cause me life long pain AND permanent nerve damage thanks to a rare condition.

      Luckily for me, my partner was willing to get sterilized as I also can't tolerate birth control. So long as I could take one birth control pill I was fine, but they discontinued it and the others I tried make me feel God awful.
      Thus for about 6yrs I was fine and then I spent a couple yrs using spermacide, as I have a interesting effect on latex, I dissolve it. Don't ask me how, luckily I found out on gloves when I was doing lots of lab work as a undergrad NOT when I got pregnant.

      Minxy Unfortunately they don't educate us women enough and there aren't enough long term studies so many of us have to find out the risks on our own. Not having a period anymore is a side effect of hormonal system being so disrupted that it doesnt function the way it is supposed to, and that might be fine for short terms, but not for years. It's a little like inducing menopause or when trans people take blockers and artificial hormones. Oestrogen and testosterone have functions in your body that arent just limited to your reproductive system, and effect your brain, skeletal and cardivovascular system (these have been studied and even wiki has a pretty well fleshed out article on these other functions)
