You just saved me from re-inventing the wheel! I had terrible results bending my seat hoop using a standard electricians conduit bender. As I was just on the verge of doing the same thing you did making a wooden form. I now have the best takeaway from your video. Using a conduit bender tool, and 1/2 inch conduit, I will bend two pieces half way. I will fill the tube with sand for a uniform bend without crinkles as I bend half the curve - twice. Then cut, match the curves, and weld them together. I think that will work easily. Thank you. dj
I haven’t even made it through the video yet but I had to stop and comment on how much I love that belt sander stand. I don’t think I’ve seen that anywhere else before. 10/10 I’m doing that.
Got me through my treadmill session today my friend. Refreshing to see someone who builds not get it right, drop back, and adapt and make it work their own way. Just like the rest of us. Great progress on the bike and tool that you built. The sand is brilliant and a tried and true method. Try anchoring the pipe in the center of the curve and bending each leg together. Just a thought.
The tighter the fit of the tube into the groove you routed out the better. The point of the groove is to keep the tubing from buckling. Great video, keep up the great work!
You have to fill it with sand packed tightly and weld both ends, or use a slightly soapy water in the tube and freeze it. This way the circular profile remains
To bend a tube curve you need a tube bender machine ! If you like to do manual by your self you can try to make a little cut on inside part of the tube where you have to curve and make hot with fire or use a big wheel external ( large diameter ) 4-5 times bigger then the diameter inside the tube you like to bend and turn around , I think it works .
Mate! that hoop you got from another source was a 1000 times better than the one i paid for...... lets not get started on that, and waited way to long for the next guy too soooo i totally agree about doing it yourself, i have a loooooonnnggggg story about how i come to this conclusion... especially on the GC. but thanks for the vid, love your master craftsmanship, made me have a go and do it myself and enjoyed every bit, I'll have to look at getting a Tshirt too.

It'll help to work out dimensions etc., … and how it will realistically all fit together. Otherwise there's a good chance I end up paying an arm and a leg for something I'm not completely happy with :/

Cafe Racer Garage I think a lot of folks (including me) thought that a quality bend couldn’t be done at home with limited tools. You have prompted me to have another go at mine. Seriously, you have a gift for the vids and the content. As I figure out how to proceed with some of the stuff on my new build, I find myself going back through your vids to see how ‘Dan’ dealt with it.
You get about three to five degrees spring back for every 90 degree bent you make you needed 180 degrees you had to make it about 186 to 190 your jig is fine pull your anchoring pont a little back about 15-20cm and try to apply your force as much closer to the distace of your anchoring point you will get perfect symmetrical hoops every time. Nice job!
@@CafeRacerGarage Thank you! I fabricate exhausts, manifolds intercooler piping after a few (couple of dozens maaaaaasive failures) we are here. Also if the pipe thickness allows it it is a bit trickier you can start the bent from the middle and you can use plaster or stucko instead of sand it has much smaller grain and it collapses even less it is a bit messy but it works! Keep on the good work!
Hell of a job man, definitely showed some determination in this video. Shame you couldnt get the bend perfect but at least you got to use that sweet new welder.
Great bit of fabrication Dan, you were so close! Try drawing around that curved tube on paper, the inside of the curve then flip the tube and draw it the other side so that you have your perfect curve drawn and the actual spring-back result line. So now you have a line with what you wanted and a line of what you got. Now cut the paper to get the difference , that is the sliver of paper of what you wanted and what you got and use that as a template to cut your bending jig on just the exit/finish side of the curve. You should then have a former which has the spring-back allowance built in! It should give nearer results although changing tube thicknesses will have an effect as will sand / no sand. Hope this makes sense, Martyn.

Watching you use that belt sander like that be careful mate I've got the same machine & doing exactly what you were doing the side of my hand touched the belt & was instantly pulled into the gap between the roller & the body of the sander. Took so much skin off in a nano second & took a bloody long time to heal. It could have been so much worse if my little finger got dragged in.

.... training to be a plumber in the early 1970's, we had different size springs which were inserted into the tube/pipe and helps the pipe keep it's shape!

if the channel in your die is slightly smaller then the diameter of the tubing your want to bend, as you pull the tubing around the bend with steady pressure it pulls the tubing down into channel and being slightly smaller it keeps better pressure on the sidewalls giving you a better chance of keeping the tubing's diameter integrity, the diameter of tubing or pipe always shrinks a little during bending....PS nice welder!!!

Is your original hoop for sale? I have a triumph that has a oddly shaped seat frame in the rear. It may actually fit nicely. Thanks for all your vids, btw. They've helped a lot throughout all my mods.
Instead of fixing the tube at the side of the pattern, fix it at the top. That way you bend the tube down the same shape on each side. I'm trying to visualise a way of pulling both sides of the curve down at the same time, from the top, using two levers - one on each side ??
You could have done the bars in two halves using you mates machine then weld and smooth down the weld in the middle no one would no it when you look at it I've seen it done in Germany 🇩🇪 all would have been done in an hour . But love watching your mind work keep going Dude .👍👍👍

It's called an Esab Rebel in the UK. Unfortunately the rep says they have a very high failure rate within the software, should get sorted but be worth waiting a while.
Couldn't you just bend it 50 percent then flip the bar and do the other half? Then both sides would have been bent over the samt part of the wood... Symmetrical!

the bright side That is a fantastic and very unique idea. It will definitely be possible. I’d recommend using a marine rope so that it’s more durable to withstand different conditions. I absolutely despise when you send a template to someone to have a part made, you pay them for the job and when it returns, you get something back that has nothing to do with the template that you sent them.
what a strange way to bend the pipe. If you had cut the right side in more (half width of the pipe) it would have bent correctly. also doing it in a smooth motion and not jerking it. that said i could have made this to spec for you in my garage in melb in 10mins. sucks that the design you asked for was nothing like what you wanted.
Johan Nilsson I tried two machine shops and they both messed me around so this is why I made my own hoop, maybe you will have better luck at a machine shop than I did.

Start in the middle. and bend both sides at the same time.maby fill it with sand. I use to make heat exchanger the same way

In Tassie we cannot cut our frame without an engineer's certificate. Do other states have this regulation?

I absolutely despise when you send a template to someone to have a part made, you pay them for the job and when it returns, you get something back that has nothing to do with the template that you sent them.
what a strange way to bend the pipe. If you had cut the right side in more (half width of the pipe) it would have bent correctly. also doing it in a smooth motion and not jerking it. that said i could have made this to spec for you in my garage in melb in 10mins. sucks that the design you asked for was nothing like what you wanted.

Johan Nilsson I tried two machine shops and they both messed me around so this is why I made my own hoop, maybe you will have better luck at a machine shop than I did.
I did mine came out perfect.
