The professor has a great understanding of humanity. It's great to be in class with such a scholar. I've been in college with many professors in the West that were simply not tolerant of non-western civilizations, or they were indifferent. This is a refreshing change.
If I lived in Sydney I'd sign up for his course on China immediately. He could do a great service for the people of Australia if he could educate the politicians in the Canberra bubble who are constantly brainwashed by US aligned and installed "advisors" China and Asia are Australia's present and future prosperity if they have the backbone to say NO to US hegemonic foreign policies and rule.

I think “TuDou” means “HuaSheng “ in some part of China，not the other way around. Nevertheless it shows his knowledge in Chinese language is really impressive
In South East Asian/Nanyang Chinese communities, the Cantonese call groundnut HuaSheng (pronounce as fa shang 花生）while the Hokkien would call groundnuts Tudou( in Hokkien - thor thou 土豆), while the textbook in Chinese/Mandarin use HuaSheng.
Officials are assigned to different sectors or industries and then promoted based on their performance and approval of the people they serve. Promotions are based strictly on performance.
Sorry, but that doesn't explain all the dumb things China does.

The other name for 花生 is 地豆, while 土豆 is another name for 薯仔(potato)

To the Southern Chinese like the Hokkien and Teochew people, peanut is called Tor Dao in the Hokkien and Teochew Minnan language. Tor Dao(peanut) when translated into Mandarin is Tu Dou.
I was stunned to see a recent photograph of Chongqing. The place is as modern as Tientsin or Guangjong, apprently.
I think a lot of us in the West have impressions built of writing about China dating back to WWII, when the city was the Nationalists' capital for a while. Thematic sentence: "The whole city smells of shit."

Insightful talk! Potato in Chinese Mandarin is 'tudou'/土豆 but in Taiwan it is called 'malingshu'/马铃薯. Yes, in some parts or region 'tudou' means 'peanuts' or 'huashengmi'/花生米。
China got so many spoken languages, but 1 unified writing. There are no national language. 普通话＝common spoken language. 地方话＝place language. China never obress other province and minority language. More than 2000 years ago just unified writing. No matter whatever race have only 1 writing throughout Chinese race.

Mr. Goodman is perfectly right that some people in China call peanuts "toudou", and that's exactly what I learned. For a long time, I was baffled that many call 'toudo" to mean potato.
Cantonese potato is called 薯仔(shu cai)，
