  • Tarawera Ultramarathon 100 miler/165.2km with 5,470m elevation gain
    Rotorua, New Zealand - 13/14 February 2021
A little insight into the high and lows of my first 100 miler including all 15 aid stations. Unfortunately, footage captured in the latter part is greatly reduced and I think you’ll appreciate why.
    Finishing stats: 32:35:05 | 96th out of 152 finishers | 42 DNF and 29 DNS
The pounamu/greenstone is unique to southern New Zealand and its carvings are important in Māori culture. The toki is associated with great mana (strength), power and honour. This particular toki blade is a symbol of strength and courage.
The race includes running along eight different lakes, the solitude of the Tarawera Forest, a boat ride across Lake Rotomahana, the waterfalls on the Tarawera Falls track, twists and turns on the Eastern Okataina track, running through the archaeological site of Buried Village, the towering redwoods, steam alongside the trail at Sulphur Point and finishing at the Lakefront Reserve in downtown Rotorua.

Great video super inspiring. So awesome to see the support all the way especially blue lake and Redwoods and at the finish. I’d have an emotional meltdown for sure!!

Awesome video! I had a very similar race to you and we spent a bit of time running back and forth. Once you said Outlet by dark, that became my goal too! Congratulations on a great finish!

This video really puts into perspective to hard it is when someone going as well as you did is over 30 hours

Things sure deteriorated very quickly when my ankle flared up! Always be prepared for anything, and then again 😉

    Great video dude!
I was impressed that you still filmed although feeling down in the dumps!
What shoes were you wearing for the run?

I wore the Altra Olympus - great cushioning and wide toe box which is what I prefer.

Great vid! Quick question, is your watch a garmin and if so what do you use to charge it on the go? Problem I’ve been having with mine when going over 70km or so

You can use a powerbank. Cos the watch battery is small, 350 mAh or so, carry an small PBank (less weight). Tie up the watch in your vest while charging so you can look the watch info, it'll full charged in an hour.

Hi John, mine was the Suunto 9 Baro which could've lasted the whole duration but I chose to charge at the 100km mark using a 10,000mAh power bank which I simply slot into a side pocket and had the cable run to my wrist. You can do the same for any other brand including Garmin; pick up at an aid station where you have a drop bad facility and drop off at the next drop bag, even easier if you have support crew.
