Thanks for the tutorial. Very informative. Thumbs up. Note: Affinity Designer 2.0 is out, and they have a Warp Mesh and Vector Cut tool now, but not a Bitmap Trace to Vector Tool yet. For that you will still need Inkscape. Do keep in mind as it was not mentioned in the video, that LightBurn has a Bitmap Vector Trace tool built in, so technically, you do not need Inkscape if you have LightBurn for that feature.
This is great information. I have used Affinity Designer for years. I bought it because of the low cost. I just started doing laser engraving. This is just great. Thank you very much.
You are the first person I have seen with Affinity Designer with a laser. THANK YOU !! I would love to have a whole course on Designing with AD for your laser. I REALLY need to find something on off-setting designs for kerf. I'll keep looking (hopefully it is in one of your other videos).
I needed this...Your video by far has been the best AD tutorial I've watched. More please! I can't afford Ai so I purchased AD but haven't used it because of the learning curve, until now. Ty
I have been using Affinity Designer on my PC and iPad for a few years now. It has done most everything I have needed, with the exceptions of dxf support and the tracing. Definitely worth the price if you are just starting and not sure about or just learning the graphic design aspect of laser engraving.
Glad you enjoyed! It's certainly a compelling offer if it fits your needs workflow and preferences. I've been hearing they've been making strides with updates which is good to hear!
Great video Alex!! I still think INKSCAPE is the BEST image program.. except for the random crashes. I'm used to the workflow of inkscape, mainly the keyboard shortcuts. I wonder if you can do a 'CTRL-D' on an entity in AD so it will like copy an entity over the original entity's XY co-ords. Helpful if you wanna put borders round fonts and inset/offset using that method
@@LaserEverything Ok!! I saw the price, it's very very attractive. I'll definitely have to have a more thorough play with it. Hopefully it has vertices/snap to vertices like inkscape does. I find that useful to specify squares/rectangles as a 'temporary spacer' in between other squares as a point of reference; then delete the temporary spacer.
Awesome video thanks 🙏🏻. I understand you sticking with Adobe but for me I just didn’t use it enough to warrant the cost. I’m starting to actually like Affinity.
Awesome walk through - Thank you. I just bought the Affinity 2 packages - any chance of you guys doing an update based on the new tool version? I wonder how many of the missing features have been added? Thanks again for great channel!!
Any of the Mactron machines linked in the description are always going to be amazing. Fav brand for a long time. You can also check out the buying guide over at www.lasereverything.net/buyingguide
Inkscape has a larger array of tools but Affinity export friendlier files with less thought. Depends on if you want functionality or ease of use. They're both solid vector editors.
Inkscape hands down ... Any free software is better for the newbies ..why waste money paying for another vector editing program ??🙄 impv Inkscape is easier and better than illustrator ... And as you say illustrator costs money ... Im not loaded ive never had over 4 figures in my bank and if something is free and is better than a payed program ..then im going free .. Ive bought illustrator ages before it went to the "pay per view scam" ..so its not an up2date version but after discovering inkscape and whats it capable of ..i have not touched illustrator for months ...so for me its a no brainer "INKSCAPE"👌😎
Hey Alex, just a suggestion, I couldn't figure out how to follow along as my install and setup weren't the same when I create an artboard, for instance, it automatically zooms into my preset layout I'm using 150mmX150mm, as that's what I'm used to, and is the size of my lens, and then the Artboard I just created replaces the layout and I can't put my artboard outside the layout as you did, and some of my controls are in different places, now I was able to find some because I'm used to some other similar programs, however, newbies may not know how to navigate, my suggestion was to start fresh show what you did to set up the way you like it, but leave options there for others to set up how they like, but you show them how they can, would be beneficial I think,
It's a great suggestion mansy and we can definitely do a video like that but honestly this is how I installed it. I bought it about 30 minutes before I started recording and didn't have time to change much at all. I'm guessing substantial changes between version numbers here but there are ways to go in obviously and customize these menus and stuff so we can definitely cover that in future video.
am currently using ADOBE Illustrator (MAC) - exporting to a Windows machine running scorchworks. This Works fine.I want to move to Affilinity designer2 - problem is, scorchworks does not display red lines - (redlines are required). So I think the problem is on Affinity's side. My question is this : What are the correct export setting on Affillinity designer2 to read Scortch works. Or should I ditch scorchworks and change to another software?
The part about Art boards in the beginning of the video. I find the Art boards act the opposite the way you explained it. I always use Art boards because you can pull objects off and still see them.

here in 2024, many of the problems have been fixed by upgrades. I found it impressive for the price. (yep, i am one that cant qualify the price of Adobe... )

Does bitmap not work as well in Lightburn?

Certainly! Glad it helped!
Really enjoyed and learned a lot from this training. Thanks for taking the time to do it for us.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been using Affinity since it came out for Windows but I didn't know of the hidden SVG setting, this will be so useful!
Nice glad you got something useful out if it :D

Thanks Cyber, inkscape is next. Remind me about the duplicate shortcut on discord and I'll check for you when I see the ping.

Will light burn do all this or do I need a separate program like this or Illustrator?
Lightburn is fine but it's laser software first and a vector editing suite second. I highly recommend getting a dedicated vector editor.
Looking for a machine to do engraving on some gold and silver any recommendations?

Not super familiar with scorchworks to be honest. What laser are you using it with?
how can i trace a knife or a pistol frame?
