Thank you Alex. I finally understand the use of "would" in the past, not only in conditional statements. You teach so cleraly without using so many words. Your relax way of speaking/teaching is the characteristic of the best teachers.
If I were able to go back in time, I would certainly watch your lessons more times. Thanks for the amazing lesson. It helped me a lot!! :D

Thanks for this lesson, teacher Alex! As usual, you made it as clear as crystal. Now I know when to use "would" or "used to" interchangeably, and when it's only possible to use "used to". For example: "When I visted grandma as a child, I would play with her cats and dogs." / "When I visited gandma as a child, I used to play with her cats and dogs." But I can't replace "used to" with "would" in this sentence: I used to study at Saint Thomas Elementary School until I got to high school.".
Marcella outstanding job I couldn’t explain better
I used to play her cat or I would ?
The differences are very clear now!! Thanks a lot, Alex! 😊
+bels Not a problem. :)
Vc é linda!!!

Hi Alex , I am from Peru and I love your lessons , these help me a lot . Thanks so much .
Thank you sir for this clarification. I would suggest for those who are still confused regarding this issue to concentrate on "past actions" and "past states".
This is such a great English class! You are so clear . I had many questions about would in the past and you have helped me a lot. Thank you very much!
Alex, do you have any video lessons on the following advanced topics?
1. Subjunctive
2. Parallel Form
3. Ellipses
This is sooo useful for me to understand used to and would.I appreciate your lesson.

Very clear video, congrats.
Dear Alex, a fantastic lesson, you are a great teacher. I enjoyed all your lessons. I finally understand after your explanation. Thank you very much.
You are welcome!
In my understanding, that's correct lukersweb. I read that in grammar book that if you use the word "if" in conditional sentence. The grammar books says, you must use "were" not "was" after the word "if". I used to use "was" when I didn't know that yet. But, after I read that in grammar book, I never use the word "was" anymore.
Thanks Alex. You are a great teacher.
Awesome I had the doubt about when and how to use "would". This video was really helpful for me. You answered me my questions. Thank you so much
Hi Alex, I am from Dominica Repablic.
You are great at what you do.
Thanks again. I'm always happy to see comments from all over the world.
I can see clearly now, the rain is gone! 😁 Thank you very much! You explained it so well 👍🏻
your teaching is very very great, thank you
@lukersweb In the first sentence is about a condition that have to be met. - IF
In the second is about a circumstance under which the action is done. - WHEN
thank you alex! you are a great teacher, your lessons are totally useful , you explain very clearly
Such a helpful video, great video.
Here we are talking about an imaginative/impossible situation....this is perfectly a correct sentence..."If i was" has a different meaning altogether!!!
Example from the Internet: "If I was wrong, I am sorry." -> A case about which the speaker is uncertain.
"If I were superman, I would fly above the clouds." -> A case which is impossible.
Hope that helps!!!
Very clear. Thank you Alex. - Love from Sri Lanka.

great alex. now I see why some people use the "would" when they're talking about the past.
Thank you finally I understood when I can use "would " in past
Thanks! I noticed another example of "would" referring to something in the past. e.g. "Why would you do that?" => somebody reacting to someone who did something obscure/unexpected.
Can you comment on this example and explain what it means and how it is used? THANKS A LOT!
Very good explanation thanks a lot indeed !
Hi it's very useful , I'm learning english my level is intermediate I want to ask why do you use in English language ( would , used to ) instead than simple past or present perfect tense or continues past tense

Hi Alex! Greetings from Yucatán, México. I have a question: if the affirmative past simple sentence "I was..." is grammatically correct, and if we can't say "I were" because that's incorrect... Why we use "If I were..." in conditional sentences instead "If I was..."?
+Daniel Ojeda If I were youIf I were you ... is used when giving ADVICE about what you would do in the same situation as the other person. You imagine yourself in their position or situation and what you would do or how you would react. If I were you, I would study more.If I were you, I would stop doing that.If I were you, I would go to the doctor.if I were you, I would subscribe to the Woodward English TH-cam channel right now. :)If I were you, I wouldn't play with those wires.Though in informal (and grammatically incorrect) English, you may hear some people say If I was... This usage doesn't sound good, so avoid it.You can also change the order of the sentenceI would study more if I were you.I would be more careful if I were you.I wouldn't do that if I were you.
Thanks a lot a great and simple video.
Thank you so much, I understood very well
Thank you. You're a great teacher!!!
Thanks for your lesson
I have always considered both " if i were " and " if i was" as correct and acceptable. However, often depends on speaker which form to use.
Thank you very much for your explanation. But has the word 'hamPster'written correctly?
excellent explanation!
I finally have found an answer to my question✌️thanks
you are the best teacher
Thank you very much. That's helpful.
Too Good ! You are awesome Alex!
thanks a lot¡ your lessons are amazing
the best video on this topic so far
Thanks! I'm glad it was useful.
I finally understand... Thank you so much again! 😄
It’s helped me. Thank you sir ! 🙂
The best teacher ever! thanks
You're too kind. Thank you!
Very useful and understandable
In second conditional is ok to use I were instead of I was. Both are correct.
@lukersweb When you're talking about the past you need to use were for all persons, if you say "If I was" is incorrect.
I appreciate this lesson.
Thanks.
Thanks a lot for the info!
Awesome teaching!
Thanks. :) I’m glad you found it useful.
@@engvidAlex You're most welcome, teacher Alex!
now i got it that how to interchange"used to" with would....and where we can't interchange "used to"...

That's very humbling to hear. Thanks for checking out the video.
Hi, thanks for the lesson. However I still have a doubt about the "location" aspect. If I had the habit of visiting a city once a month, Could I use would?. For example: When I used to live in Colombia, I would go to Cali once a month. Is that Incorrect?.
Thanks for your answer.
Yes, it is correct.
clear explanation teacher, greets from Perú.
I like your explainations!
Hi Alex! I Iike your videos more and more! Also because I understand all the words you say without subtitles! It does not seem true, but it is so! I did not think I'd do it in such a short time. See you next! Thank you.
That's awesome, Mauro! Good luck with your studies. :)
thank you Mr. Alex...
It was really helpful. Keep up the good work.
First time I have a (even) clear explanation about that. Thanks!
Nice lesson Alex. Thanks a Lot good man.
You're very welcome. Thanks for checking out the video.
Good Teacher..
I'm afraid you spelt "hamster" incorrectly. "Hampster" is not correct. "P" is not necessary. But your lessons are easy to understand. You give good example senteces
to us. That makes your English understood clear and more easily. Thank you.

I curious why the title of this video is '"Would' in the past' while it talks about would and used to even used to more than would. However, I do really like all your video, thumbs up for you. I always wish the best of luck.
Thanks! I'll really apreciate this! I did't untestand how to use WOULD in a past sentence for describing somethin y used to do! really thanks :D!
