It’s sad but you have to understand that on the back side of the rock was and probably is still breeding grounds for great white sharks. Been in the area all my life, people from out of the area and people here have never known that. About 20-25 years ago it was talked about.
Sad for the guy killed, prayers are with his family

Every surfer including myself know the risks. I learned to surf at A Beach, and have surfed there hundreds of times, it’s a wonderful place and a wonderful activity. At least he died doing what he like….RIP..

It's 11 degrees here in the Northeast US . Is it really that warm to go swimming in California right now?

No. The guy must have been a dedicated waterman and knew the risks. God Bless him and his family.

Like the other responder said; it's pretty cold in that part of the Ocean (probably low to mid 50s) but October to around January is the seal breeding season, which of course brings the sharks back into the area (which, I might want to add, in California, stretches from the Cali/Oregon Border, thru the SF Red Triangle and down past Monterey to San Luis Obispo county and probably further south, too (as the seal populations expand). White sharks are very tolerant of colder water.

    • @leopardcubpupkryky6940

No, the water is from the high 40s to low 50s, but that's what a wetsuit is for.

@@nickmitsialis sort of correct......they breed off of the hawaiin islands, they teach offspring to hunt in the west coast waters.......all of the west coast waters......from the central coast to oregon being the hotter areas, you are correct.

Not true what she said, There has been a shark attack within the last 30 years in Morro Bay. Back in 2015 a lady's board had a huge bite taken out of it. If that would have been her body, she would have for sure been dead.

@@lanerelyea5790 Don't know enough yet; that other fatal attack that occurred in 2003, the woman was swimming with sea lions who suddenly 'disappeared', leaving her to the attention of a very large great white. Probably this surfer was struck by another great white but we don't know if it was curiosity or an attempt to feed. The shark's size can tell us a lot. If it's a younger/smaller/teenage shark then it probably is not experienced enough to tell a human, bogie board or kayak from natural prey. If there are now a new generation of sharks reaching the size they begin to 'transition' from fish/rays/small sharks to seals, there will probably be more encounters between people and sharks.

Most wetsuits are black, and most shark attacks happen in shallower water.....obviously.

@@leopardcubpupkryky6940 against a light sky, any wetsuit or any outline looks dark; the light/dark contrast (even on things like suntanned hand/foot and untanned bottom hand/foot) often is an attraction to sharks==and, so are bright colors.
